I would put it in the same realm as the achievements that have been surfacing in games in the last 10 or so years. It has a small goal to meet that will get you alittle amount of recognition, maybe a title to show off, or just a check in a box of a list. The point is, you specifically try to achieve that goal rather than thinking of the whole game and it's effects. So instead of a player thinking of seeing the play and then attacking the person that has the ball, thee player is thinking when a specific player gets the ball, i will try my best to injure him. It might seem small, but the human brain responds to some very small stimuli. Exactly. I don't know why many people can't see this. Reference the Vikings game a couple of years ago. The Saints were clearly trying to injure Favre with illegal late hits, not all of them called. They did the same thing during the Cardinals game against Kurt Warner, even though it quickly became a blowout. Every team knew that the NFL has been trying to catch a team in the act for years, maybe even decades now. They knew that the first team caught will be set as an example.

Crackbacks, hi-lows, brutal hits, helmet-to-helmet contact, horse collars, ect. happen every game. Are we going to start questioning if every illegal play can be attributed to a bounty?

Furthermore, the existence of a bounty doesn't mean that players are committing an illegal play to injure someone. And if for some reason an extra $5,000 was worth the $50,000 fine that would incur, where the fuck was the league?? One of the players that did get fined in the Vikes game was literally someone bumping Farve after the idiot tried to get in the way following a dump. There's a compilation on youtube of the hits and 95% look clean

The specific instances simply don't matter once the cat is out of the bag. This is like saying "LISTEN I CHEATED ON YOU WITH A BUNCH OF GIRLS, BUT THE TIME YOU SAW ME WITH KATE WE JUST RAN INTO EACH OTHER AT THE GROCERY STORE. I CHEATED ON YOU BUT NOT WITH THAT BITCH" The people being punished lied to the most powerful guy in the room on a topic the league is very sensitive towards. That alone will land you a brutal ass fucking. I feel Goodell had to 1. Get all the player safety addicts off of NFL's nuts 2. Set a precedent and make sure no one dares to run this scheme again. This harsh ruling accomplishes both. Job well done in my opinion.

LOL at Tebow coming here. What are they going to do, have Sparano use him in more Wildcat? The Defensive coordinator at the time, went to St Louis. So I think they have already replaced that factor. Green-Ellis is now a Bengal, while Benson still hangs out in FA. Colts have signed a new C making it appear even more that Saturday will likely be reunited with Manning with the Broncos. While the Broncos look to fill Plan B with a meeting with ex Chicago backup QB Caleb Hanie. Must fill the news with something other than Tebow, because seeing him as a Jet would make me sad.

Suuuuuuuuuuuuure they do. Way too severe, and just so flimsy. It wasn't long ago that ESPN had an entire segment devoted to players getting licked rather severely. Remember, "JACKED UP?" Oops, it's not tackle football anymore folks.

I think the punishment was harsh but needed to be done. Don't really want that shit in the game.

Also it requires them to find someone to fill the duties of moving players around and in 8 games there's bound to be some injuries or other unforseeable events that a gm usually takes care of. They can also act as an advisor to the coach, which would be handy since the saints have to use a different one this year. Some coaches try to fill both roles and GM while they coach, but it usually doesn't work as well as them focusing on coaching (see: Tom Coughlin with Jacksonville vs Tom Coughlin with the Giants)

That said, it's all about Payton and Loomis lied to Goodell. It's like a kid who steals a cookie, and instead of taking the wrist slap punishment after getting caught, he instead lies about it and it ends up even worse. What the Saints do is common throughout the entire NFL and is an endemic problem with mentality and coaching leaguewide, Saints were just more obvious and dumb about it. Oh well. 3 years of relevance. It was nice, back to Browns territory.
