from what i've played so far this year:
skyrim > portal 2 > de:hr > witcher 2 > Bastion > CoD3
would really like to try Zelda before i decide, will probably try AC:Revelations just for the hell of it, but doubt it ranks above the other games just cause i've played brotherhood and AC is starting to feel somewhat stale.

Why is Portal 2 over Human Revolution
Why is it over Witcher 2
I'm so confused. I mean, Portal 2 was fun -- but it wasn't amazing either. Witcher 2 and HR are were huge sequels to two fantastic, and perhaps, some of the best RPG's ever made. Portal 2 was the sequel to a game that had 2 hours of content, at most. It was fun, don't get me wrong -- but it's by no means GOTY.

Isnt Zelda - Ocarina of Time the highest rated game ever? Overall Rate is 99 which seems a little bit higher And my guess would be Skyrim cause it prevents many girls from having sex :p Not sure I get this statement? Cause their significant others are busy playing skyrim? Because it has a surprisingly huge following among female gamers? Because something else?

it's personal opinion. i could similarly question why you would choose witcher 2 over portal 2?

That secondary poll not far under the OP should have had Skyrim in it for comparisons sake.

skyrim skyrim SKYRIM
Seriously, no single player game has made me want to play it as bad as that game.

so many people voting for games based on amount of content. it's so sad
i would rather buy/play a game that was only 6 hours long if it was fun to play. but I never want to buy/play games that last 40+ hours when all the gameplay is incredibly shallow/repetitive. this is why I can never get into any RPGs, the gameplay mechanics are just so lame and then spread out for huge amounts of time.

What recommendations does everyone have? I'd say Deus Ex is a solid choice, if it's few noticeable flaws don't hold it back too hard. Uncharted 3 was visually and cinematically stunning, but I don't know if it's gameplay holds up to other games released this year.
But my top pick would be Portal 2. The only issues I have with it are it's short length and how it was a bit easier than the original in some ways. A high production value, fun single player and co-op, fun and amazing story, witty humor, and good replay value definitely shoot it to the top of my list.
I was disappointed-- I came here thinking we were gonna vote and discuss the best sc2 1v1 game of the year...

This thread is in Sports and Games not the SC2 general discussion. Make a thread about that in the SC2 general forum?

Skyrim is a great RPG indeed and may very well be the game of the year.
Portal 2 is a masterpiece, a true work of art and it should be on display in museums along with its predecessor.

Skyrim was fantastic console game, but it was definitely half-assed on the pc side. They ported it with to my knowledge not changing anything. And that caused a lot of problems. But on the console it was absolutely incredible!

Honestly, I think GOTY awards are silly. Whatever game is in the biggest hype of the current end of the year stretch (in this case, Skyrim, despite how much I love it) wins it. I just feel it's kind of arbitrary, since earlier titles in the year go completely unnoticed. I honestly think that Deus Ex: Human Revolution is the game of the year. Skyrim should get best RPG of the year, but Deus Ex: HR needs to get GOTY in my opinion. It was probably the truest successor to the original Deus Ex we will ever get, and that is a feat in it of itself.
Witcher 2 also deserves an honorable mention in something. However, Skyrim was great. Skyrim was fan-fucking-tastic, even. However, just because you're all experiencing it at the end of the year doesn't mean it's the best. If Skyrim was released in July, and Deus Ex: HR was released in November, the tables would be turned completely and you know it with the hype that was around that game when it was first released and the weeks after.
Not saying Skyrim shouldn't be in the running, I just personally believe, when we all take a step back, Deus Ex deserves it more than Skyrim. Skyrim basically completed the job of not wetting the bed, Deus Ex did so much more IMO.

Skyrim obviously :D Although to be fair, I haven't actually picked up the new Zelda yet... I must do that soon ^^

in terms of best made game i probably would say its Skyward Sword. it got crazy reviews. however because GotYs also take into popularity, skyrims probably gunna win.

Skyrim is amazing and deserving of game of the year.

I think Skyrim was a massive letdown. Game of the Year? Yeah, probably. For anyone that played Morrowind it still doesn't come close, and that was what many were hoping it would be, but nope. Miles better than Oblivion.
I'd personally give it to L.A. Noire...an extremely innovative game in a genre that is barely explored, with graphical technology we've never seen before in a video game. Skyrim will no doubt win all the awards, it's just a shame it's more like an Oblivion that Bethesda didn't fuck up instead of something that can touch the greatness of Morrowind.
