They might as well hand out next years GOTY award to Blizzard now. Diablo is a little lucky to be avoiding all these powerhouse games this year. I don't expectthe pool next year to be nearly as deep. Mass Effect 3 comes out next year though. On the other hand Blizzard has like 3 shots at GotY. HotS, Diablo 3, and WoW expansion. in terms of popularity every game is a joke compared to d3, even HoTS 3 little words Grand Theft Auto (number 5 could theoreticaly be released next year), if you think Diabolo is popular you forget that the majority of gamers today are console gamers and diabolo means shit to them.
On Topic:
First i have to say i didnt play Witcher 2 but maybe i really should since it seems to be a great game. Nor did i play Arkham city or Dark Souls. So i cant consider these games for my game of the year pick. Games i did play and think are worth considering are Skyrim, Battlefield3, Portal2 and Deus Ex:HR. All in all i think Skyrim will be GotY even if its not my favourite game this year. Its far from perfect but the others arent perfect too.
Multiplayer game of the year, best sound effects, best animations and best lighting and textures goes to BF3. My favourite game this year is BF3 but thats mainly because i like multiplayer games more than singleplayer. Also BF3 has the best graphics and by far the best sound effects i have ever heard in a game. The multiplayer is pure fun even if it may not be suited for "high level esport standards". Why is this not GotY? Because the singleplayer story is mediocre and a obvious attempt to copy COD, although i like that its a bit harder than COD.
Best humour and videogame character goes to Portal2. Portal2 was fun too, a good story and hillarious humour. But its too short and easy so not a game you will be playing too long. Cave Johnson is definitely my favourite videogame charakter this year and dont disagree with me on this one or he will burn your house down... with lemons. But in the end it has too little content to be GotY based on the story and its too easy to be judged as a innovative "puzzle game".
Best Aesthetics goes to Deus Ex:HR I really liked the Style of DE:HR and the story was good too. In fact everything about this game was atleast good. So why not GotY? Because nothing was really breathtaking exeptional (atleast not for me). No fancy new engine, no innovative new mechanics, no exeptional soundtrack. Atleast the aesthetic style is original but somehow (and i know this is a subjective judgement) this game still lacks the spark that makes it a GotY.
Best Soundtrack and Leveldesign and GotY go to Skyrim So lets talk about Skyrim. This game, altough it has a lot of flaws, has the certain something. And dont think im i blind Elder Scrolls fanboy or fantasy game fanboy in general. Because normally i dont like fantasy games. When my brother showed me the Skyrim trailer i thought its a nice trailer but that game has no guns so i probably wont like it. I even joked about it and mentioned this scene from raiders of the lost ark: + Show Spoiler + Then i played Skyrim, now im a believer. Well i have to admit im a bethesda fanboy because of Fallout3 and NewVegas. And skyrim has most of the elements that made me like these two games. The stories in skyrim range from ok to very good. Some quests are boring courier jobs and some are fascinating Indiana Jones like adventures or epic sagas of heroes. But thats the strong point of Skyrim, content, content and more content. And i really enjoy the unique subtle Bethesda style storytelling where you find out about stuff that happened trough books, notes and/or random strangers. Yes some things dont add up depending on the order in wich you do the quests but this freedom is also a quality of the games storytelling. You decide what happens when and if it happens at all. Then there is this beautiful world they created. Its just amazing to hop on your horse and just ride trough the woods of Skyrim. Find a viewpoint and take some screenshots or be amazed by a mysic temple you discovered. The beautiful land of Skyrim sucks you in and doesnt let you go for weeks maybe even years. This whole experience is underlined by the best soundtrack in a videogame this year (maybe even all time). God how i love the music in Bethesda games. Reasons why this shouldnt be GotY: Well there are a lot of bugs in Skyrim more than in every other game i listed here (but im one of the luicky ones that hsnt had much problems with BF3). Other that that the game is not very challenging and some mechanics are probably a bit overpowered but for me its not a dealbraker.
Honorable mentions: "Fuck You Gamers" award goes to Duke Nukem Forever Seriously 12 years of cheking out the 3Drealms forums for this? The game wasnt even that bad like some people made it look. But the hole fiasco with the dedicated servers was just a big fuck you to us loyal fans. Shame on you Duke.
Best movie with videogame elements goes to Uncharted3

my goty is kirby's return to dreamland personally. been waiting so long for a true sequel to crystal shards on console.

I don't see how Skyrim doesn't take down every award it's eligible for to be honest. Other games this year have been downright amazing, but Skyrim just completely annihilates everything. I haven't had the same amount of fun with a game since the original halo back for the xbox. I played most of the games (played 10 out of the 15 on the list), and only a couple blew me away (Deus Ex and LoZ), but Skyrim made them look hollow. So I say Skyrim all the way.

It's probably gonna be skyrim, though personally I found the game good, but very repetitive at times. Its combat was also pretty unremarkable, regardless of the difficulty level. If you're a player who doesn't like exploration of a game world, I could see how Skyrim could be a borefest for some. Like Jindo said, the first few hours of the game are very interesting and capture your attention well, but eventually it becomes obvious that a good 65% of the game is sort of just a repetition of the amazing 35%. There's a lot of quantity there, but it almost feels like they stretch out the dungeon slogging a bit too much.

It's got to be Skyrim.
My other favourites were Deus Ex, Portal 2, Battlefield 3, Total War: Shogun 2.

I've played the game for many, many hours on master difficulty (I'm somewhere around level 75ish), I am honestly probably in the very last 20% of sidequests remaining in the game (yes, I do talk to nearly every NPC I can find in every town), and probably only have about 20 more locations to discover.
I think the option of giving the player so much vastness is good, but there's definitely a lack of true variety in gameplay experiences (at least for the sidequests). Even all the little puzzles in the dungeons are exactly the same thing repeated 4 or 5 times (look at the claw for the animal symbols, look on the wall for whether it's a snake whale or eagle, pull this lever not that lever). You have to admit that after the 3rd tomb you clear filled with draugurs, the remaining 20 or so tombs left that are associated with quests or dragon words get kinda repetitive. Plus of course, the AI is pretty simplistic. Dragon fights are sometimes pretty cool, but every other enemy is fairly straightforward in its tactics (which is probably a necessity, given how every "spec" should be able to defeat it).

a lot of games deserve the recognition of GoTY, but skyrim has the popularity and pull that makes it a far memorable game (on a large scale) than any other.
on a personal level, i loved dues ex and bastion, but skyrim is still like the must-play. i don't know how many days in a row i spent in a group chat with our mics while i played skyrim and found myself talking about every little thing. it is a unique RPG where everyone receives the same experience in different ways---sometimes based solely on how you are like as a person or in game. you have so much control with yourself that it's like a proud achievement to be able to talk about your character or where its been.
at the beginning of the year, i played a lot of oldies with friends or without them, and looked for even more oldies to fill in the time between major game releases as nothing else was in my real interest. skyrim though, just about fills in as many interests as a game could... that is, if there's a little bit of exploring nature in you.

It comes down to really really close between Portal 2 and Skyrim. I have to give it to Portal 2 however, such a polished and unbelievably enjoyable experience that is now in my top 3 games of all time (Skyrim isn't far out of it though). My Top 5: 1-Portal 2 2-Skyrim 3-Witcher 2 4-Deus Ex 5-Batman: Arkham City
Great great year for games. Battlefield 3, Dead Island, Warhammer: Space Marine, Bastion, and DiRT 3 were some honorable mentions, all worth playing.

Isn't Skyrim just clubbing and shooting? Like its predecessor?

Uuh yes, I am so waiting for HOTS after they have proven that they do not give a damn about the story-line. Guild Wars 2: no one knows if it will be finished the next year and if it will succeed. CS:GO? The console title? Will it fail or will it fail? They neither worked on the flaws in CS nor CS:S, but you expect them to create a good new CS?

I think people are still too much in the glow of Skyrim.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a much better successor to its predecessor than Skyrim was to Oblivion.
Deus Ex: HR, Skyrim, Batman: AC, and Witcher 2. They were all fantastic.

Ok 10 hours is a big difference from 100+ hours. Oblivion got boring to me around 20-30 hours and I only went back after modding the shit out of it. How many of those 100 hours did u find enjoyable is the question...I recognize Skyrim has flaws but its already given me more hours of entertainment than any game this year. Thats mainly what I base my vote on. Witcher 2 for example had amazing production values and better combat than skyrim but after 2 playthroughs totalling 50 hours or so theres nothing left to do really.

GotY for me is definitely Battlefield 3. Personally I could never give any game without multiplayer a leg to stand on when compared to one with multiplayer and for all of skyrims ups, which is like everything except for the UI they made, any game with multiplayer (including MW3) will always have more replay value than a singleplayer game whos only purpose for is it to play when im bored. Especially if that singleplayer game's mechanics are just running and hitting things (which skyrim is)
BF3 Skyrim
idc about any other game tbh

well to be fair, the difference is about two or three years, deus ex 2 to current (human revolution) is about 8 years and oblivion to skyrim is around 5
like i said earlier, and aside from the fad it is now, it will still be a more memorable game for what it is (skyrim that is). for anyone reading though this and hasn't played deus ex or anything else yet, don't let comments that take away from all the other games mentioned here!
my friends and i are really co-op oriented ever since the days of neo-geo or when online RTS and RPG's were really fresh on the PC. now, i can absolutely say that co-op bears heavy weight when game producers sit down for ideas. even if the game isn't co-op it makes players happy and brings fun to the table when they know that so many other people are playing the same thing. think counterstrike when it seemed like it was the only game anyone was playing back in the day, or diablo 2 when it took your life by choke-hold. a game may be impeccable in all things story-telling and its very own atmosphere, but may not hold the same phantasm... i guess.. of a gigantic production like skyrim. haha. think of all the voice actors they needed for that game.. unbelievable

skyrim, portal 2 and DXHR are my picks, though the former 2 are probably 1 and 1a on my list. wouldn't really be fair to put games I haven't played yet on a ranking.

It's so hard for me to pick. Portal 2, Deus Ex, Skyrim, and The Witcher 2 have all been MIND blowing gaming experiences this year, and I couldn't possibly know which one I want to take GOTY.
Been an insane year for gaming for me, so no matter what happens I'm happy
