I wanted that! Now what do I do?
bo1b: Puncture imba :p
So, I'm level 82 with the dual totem witch, 8,4k damage, 3,6k health, maxed resists. Now what do I do? I've been playing maps for a bit, started on 68, moved up to 69 and now to 70, trying to get a couple of 71 maps and then I'll switch to those. Maps so far are pretty easy. I accidentally spawned Atziri, couldn't touch the boss. Should I level up more, get more HP, more damage? All the noob guides I found only went up to level 70 or something. I found two 5-linked items, an armour and an axe. No 6-link yet. Also cannot find the chaos damage gem. Goals!
But, if I level up in maps, will I get anywhere? What is the end-game goal?

Maps are the best places to level as you can get higher level maps which give you more XP. At your level, you are going to be facing a very severe experience penalty at maps level 70 and below (Ideally you want to be within 10 levels of the map level).
In hardcore (tempest), you'd be looking to get much more HP at this level. In softcore (warbands) your HP is still pretty low but I'd be looking for damage mostly.
Unless you have a big reason to be self-found, you can look to buy a better 5link or 6link as well as any gems (like added chaos) that you feel you need. Use poe.trade (thats the url. poe.trade).
The end game goals in PoE are always self-set because there is always something more to achieve. Would you like to be able to kill atziri? What about Uber atziri? Would you like to own 5 exalts? What about 50 exalts? etc.
A lot of people feel like flame totem is a bit of a dead end build this league. Really good for a first character to reach maps and farm currency/gear, but not really a "cool endgame" character. So you could consider re-rolling a more powerful, complex build using your currency and gear base to level fast (buy a goldrim and ur resists are good till merciless XD) as well as any really good gear you have found that doesn't work with your current build could provide inspiration for your next one (like "i have a super-high Energy Shield chest armor but I'm life based, maybe I should make an ES based character").

What build would you recommend? I am self-found by the way, old habit of playing diablo 2 singleplayer :p But I like it that way, harder to find stuff. In diablo 2 I had a self-found 1.10 enigma, if that means anything to you. Haven't got the time for that kind of commitment anymore, but I am persistent over longer periods of time
|
I've never played a strictly self-found character before so I'm not sure what to recommend. Flame totem is definitely nice in that sense as it's gear-agnostic enough to make self-found viable. A lot of the end game attraction for me is to come up with a unique build that often hinges around a specific item (an op weapon, a rule-breaking unique item, etc) that I can abuse. However if I can't trade for that item then I dunno what I'd do. I think that most 2h weapon builds will be viable self-found as well since it's pretty easy for a 2h weapon to approach 400dps which should be enough to clear most content.
That said, if you for example are trying to get a 6link, there are still ways to do that (the Divination card system) where you could grind a zone (for an extended period of time) that you know drops the divination cards for the item that you want. I'd personally rather just trade for the item but you certainly don't have to. The wiki has a list of all the divination cards as well as known drop locations. Keep in mind that the more desirable the reward, the rarer the card will be so set your sights on something reasonable (for example, try to grind "The Chains that Bind" card for any white 6l chest rather than "The Celestial Justicar" for a white 6L astral plate as the astral one will likely be a fair bit rarer, although usually more desirable).
As a self-found player I'd try to get your masters to at least level 6 in order to use them for crafting purposes as well. That will help you to fill out any gear slot that feels a bit weaker than it should.

Most fun build in the game is exploding arrow scion. ;P
More seriously though, I discovered the beauty of firestorm flame totem for levelling today. My god.
|
You need a quill rain for explosive arrow builds in general, but yes thats a very cool build that outside of quill rain is very doable self-found I think.
|
They (sadly?) nerfed the drop rate of quill rain for whatever reason... I have found ONE so far, which is a very low amount. I don't know how rare it is now, but I'd say if you want to play explosive arrow self-found then you shouldn't be too focused on finding quill rain. A +2 bow is probably quite OK though and very achieveable with just alteration orbing blue bows.

Sn0_Man: Found 1 of those cards in about 10 runs, looks like a nice project, thank you! I'm not quit sure about a melee build, there are too many monsters for that to kill 1 by 1. That archer build looks promising, I'll look into that.
|
Well, 2h melee builds usually use Cyclone for AoE, so that wouldn't be a problem. It's a VERY different playstyle though (and very vulnerable compared to dual totems).
Especially for self-found, i'd let my currently-owned items dictate a lot about what build I tried but I have no idea what you have. Either way, PoE's all about making your own idea of a cool character and reaching your own idea of endgame, so keep on playing exactly how you want.
|
For 2h melee I can just recommend using Sweep. Great fun, one of the best clear speeds I have had experienced so far. If you link it with Area of Effect gem its range is very huge and a bonus is the lazyness of the skill. You don't need to click the enemies, you can just play like an Arc caster basically. Right click once or two times, move to the next screen.

i shat my pants today... was levelling my new character and happened to find my 4th jack in the box divination card.
for drama, i announced in guild chat "WHAT AM I GONNA GET"
switched to my main and handed it in to Tasuni... Shavronne's Wrappings. Pants = shat.

Too bad Shav's is 4x more common now huehuehue
But congrats. (Now you can enjoy the realization that Shav's is actually only a small chunk of what it costs to build a lowlife character)
|
Some lowlife builds can be played with just a Shav's + some basic ES gear. For example, I would recommend lowlife Crown of Eyes KB wander. The only other specific thing you will need on gear is a good bit of mana regen since KB ain't cheap. Or you could go Blood Magic / Mortal Conviction and just pop your Surgeon's life flask every 5 seconds. It's only annoying for a little while, then it becomes second nature.

Speculation on price floor of Void Battery? I've been waiting to get one of these all league, and I'm seeing prices continue to drop in Standard. From 29 down to the current 21. How much lower can they go?
|
Void Battery is a 100-115 global crit, 135+ spell damage, 10-20 cast speed wand (with a nice mana roll too).
The price floor for that item is pretty high even before you talk about rarity (which is obscene). Don't expect it to fall far, IMO.
|
My guess is that VB prices dropped since +3 is super FOTM and T1 uniques are now 4x more common
Standard is the land of glass cannons, so people are also more likely to forgo shields and go staff instead of wand/shield
Might go down a little more to like 18-20 is my guess, but like Sn0 said it's a pretty damn good weapon so I wouldn't expect it drop too much more than that
|
Void battery happens to improve substantially when dual wielded just sayin XD
|
nah, not gonna be making a low life wander. i'm playing a life based KB wander already, very happy with it at the moment.
prices tanked like crazy for shavs lol

I got a quill rain for 5c that was 4linked with 5 sockets today, they're pretty cheap and if you don't waste orbs on useless shit you can definitely get more then 5 chaos by lvl 38 (which is when you get gmp at the very earliest).

It does, my stupid overpowered standard char was lowlife double void battery. It did so much damage that I killed myself to reflect through 90% res
You also need really good crit jewelry and preferably a high es 6l chest to make it work though, so it's stupid expensive
