Yeah I agree, didn't really think that through. It would be no problem if you were fighting all the time, but it's probably only useful for true crit builds. Unless Storm Brand + Increased crit or sth solves the problem.

I think going melee + crit + berserker sounds a bit too much though, but maybe it works well in the next league. Trypanon might work really well since you don't need to invest in crit here and just need crit multi & attack speed which Berserker gives a ton of.

I'm just waiting to see what the weapon type-specific support gems look like to know if a Varunastra build using all of them seems worth it at all.

Seems like there will be more melee crit nodes in the new passive tree. Like one guy mentionedin the comments for this teaser the top left and top right small nodes have the same icon as the minors before Disemboweling have right now. Kinda sure I'd be playing some kinda Slayer melee crit build if there are 3+ crit nodes in the left side of the tree now, but maybe Disemboweling switched positions so it'd be 2+.

edit: could just be physical attack damage apparently, since that icon is the same too. Still would be surprised if the new tree doesn't have more for melee crit chance since you are pretty much forced to travel all the way to ranger/shadow if not going staves.

I am not sure if I will be able to resist making a Cyclone Trypanon Berserker in Legion league. Picking up Blitz and Rage nodes should give me enough attack speed to be able to use it well. Upkeeping Blitz should be super easy with Trypanon.
And since I can skip aspect of carnage I can use Abyssus for more damage.
And using new chain skill to move from pack to pack instead of Leap Slam should help.

Balance Manifesto's certainly something - didn't expect those kind of adjustments to Dense Fossils, though they were probably justified.

Dagger and Staff base types
The list of Dagger and Staff base types now includes a number of weapons that inherently can't have any caster modifiers on them. Previously, creating a great attack dagger or staff was significantly more difficult than other weapons like claws or maces, as preventing caster modifiers was an additional, often expensive, step.

A staff that can't roll caster modifiers is now called a Warstaff, while daggers that can't roll caster modifiers are called Daggers and ones that can are called Rune Daggers. Existing base types are unaffected. We've tried to maintain a diverse set of weapons, keeping base types appropriate to those that were favoured for a specific role. There have been some numerical changes to these weapons to further reinforce this.


Interesting change, getting the mace <-> scepter treatment. I'd dearly love the chance for a melee staff build to be viable - wish the Gladiator minor nodes had changed to generic block rather than "dual-wielding or holding a shield", but oh well.

Next league Elementalist will crash hard.

Staves will be very viable, for example with Hegemony's Era with which both Slayer (not picking the 8% crit ofc) and Berserker can be beastly. However, with more critical strike nodes on the passive tree it's quite possible that going staves is less attractive if the location of the crit staff nodes on the top side of the tree remains. They did however say they shuffled the passive tree a lot so making any kind of melee builds with PoB right now is pretty useless. For bow builds (minus Lioneye's Fall builds) / spell builds not much should change however.

Hmm, what will be leech options for spellcasters now that Warlord's Cry is nerfed. I was thinking of using it for next league
I guess I will again need to depend on Atziri's flask.

EB + MoM,which is probably still incredibly good for making you tanky as a ranged char with not much investment.

Besides Atziri flask you can get small amounts of life leech for spells from rings, amu, Cerberus Limb, Doryani's, Vinktar's and probably other sources aswell. None of them will make you facetank any boss in the game but neither did Warlord's.

I think amus can get up to 0.5% which isn't really bad.

The biggest problem for spell caster now might be mana sustain without free mana leech, not sure if EB/MoM fixes that or they won't be able to spam spells without Vaal Clarity. Mana regen on gear is nice but still a but limited.

Some ascendancies help you recover mana (e.g. Trickster), there is also a good amulet craft that regenerates % of damage taken as mana and Assassin's Mark's life/mana gain on kill. Still, really spammy spell builds might need an instant mana flask to keep the zoom-zoom going.

Animation cancelling is a thing now, holy hell does that feel weird after all these years.

e: This whole "Oh, GGG wants me to play X this league"-thing is getting annoying. It's rarely "we decided to nerf this a little", instead something like ES in this case just gets hit by 4 hammers at the same time.

The only place they could end up being heavy-handed would be ES passives on the tree. Dense fossils are absurd and abyss jewels can be replaced with regular jewels. Seems reasonable.

Other than Elementalist who totally lost his single best node without compensation and is pretty bad otherwise I don't think anything else will be unplayable. Hell, I think Winter Orb even with a 50% nerf can still end up being a top skill. Occultist & Trickster will still be good as well, and I doubt the ES nerfs will make going ES a bad choice. If anything, not going ES will feel less shitty now. And maybe the changes to Immortal Call etc. will actually make it feel even more safe (at least for chars that have explosions/shatter for Porcupines).

I think the Warlord's Mark changes are the toughest thing for some casters, might need to use a mana flask.
