Is it like this for anyone else? How much longer is the closed beta gonna last? I was under the impression it was a few weeks top ?

I agree that, if you literally didn't have $10 to your name, then yea you probably shouldn't be spending your time on games if you're in a position to earn that money. However, it's more the fact that a lot of people don't just want to throw money around at every opportunity. With most people I think it's just a case of being reluctant to spend $10 on something they may have had a really short time to get a feel for. And, not to forget that a lot of people may have been attracted to this game as it is F2P. Especially considering that we've just come out of the steam sale and a lot of people will have probably spent whatever money they put aside for buying new games this summer, or more. edit - Just to get back on topic - Does anyone know, if I was to purchase access to the beta, would I lose the progress I've made over this weekend?

Look; this is one of the few games out there that doesn't try to cut corners like other AAA titles out there. It's designed for hardcore gamers that went a hardcore ARPG experience, the ability to customize while also making interesting choices. And all they ask is $10. I could spend $10 in various more wasteful ways. If you really want access into the game that badly, I think you should be able to afford $10. I've spent far more money on far worse products. This isn't like a highly exclusive beta that is difficult to get in. It's $10. That's a movie ticket. That's like a meal at a decent sit down joint. If you can't spare $10, I really don't know what to tell you.

I'm not in any particular rush to get into the beta. All I'm saying is, I've seen your line of argument before and while I can see your point, just because something presents good value to you, it doesn't mean it does for everyone.

I remember reading August for the open beta, but now I can't find anything about it so I might have just been dreaming.

I think they should focus more on polish and story etc than getting Act 3 done though, adding more acts to an open beta which is already awesome is probably more effective than releasing a huge beta which feels unpolished.

I'll definitely be paying the $10 when I get home to continue to play. Never played the old Diablos, and I played Torchlight and Diablo 3, but overall I think this game is far more interesting for me. It has such a level of depth in character development that I haven't experienced before, and it has me hooked! Considering what the above poster has said, he is right. Torchlight and diablo have smoother combat, and the quests seem a little more engaging to the entire story line, but in the end what is going to pull me back into Path of Exile over those other 2 games is the massive character customization. I think a nice story line and quests are fun for when you're leveling, but really I need an engaging game, and that's what Path of Exile has done perfectly. Right from level 1, I don't feel bored like I need to hit X level before I can have fun, I can actually start building my character right from the start. Every level for skill points, ability gem level gain, item found, feels like my character is just getting more powerful overall. Anyone who hasn't played this game, I strongly recommend getting it. People say the combat is clunky, which it will feel if you are fresh off D3 going into PoE, but you get used to it really quick and the clunkiness goes away.

However it definitively has some flaws. Much of the combat is pretty stale compared to the diablo, the models are pretty bad, the environment bad, and story and artwork and just flat out bland. I don't think this game will be able to make the turn-around to mainstream without a new art director. Diablo has spectacular partical effects and dungeon environment. Despite all this. these guys KNOW how to make the core of a beautiful AARPG. The skills, leveling, pacing, and difficulty is superb. It's so hard to find these characteristics in games anymore, and PoE's beautiful design is what's going to keep me locked in. Reminds me of a game the Geneforge series by Spiderware Software. Whenever I play that game I wish the guys who developed it could have teamed up with the visual teams of Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Skyrim to create the perfect RPG.

The only thing I agree with you is that the combat can feel clunky after coming from Diablo 3, however you get used to it, but I don't think its bland at all. I much prefer the models and art styles in PoE over Diablo. They actually give a dark and jagged feel, and they develop an environment way better than D3 did. But even if you prefer Diablo3 over PoE because its prettier, Diablo 3's storyline and gameplay are just awful.
