the orange box games are not suitable for your computer TF2 and CSS run very well actually.
That is bizarre to me, I have no idea how you are playing tf2 with one gig of ram. Did I misunderstand your stats?

There is this kind of false asomption that BW is not noob friendly. I played BW as a noob for years and had ton of fun. BW is noob friendly; I suggest to play custom games with friends or vs Green tea AI before hitting ICCUP. But even there, you'll probably fight beginners like you, just talk to them and practice with them BW is awesome, you won't regret it

There are so many good old/low-spec games the list would be several pages long but to start:
Fallout (2.5d RPG, post apocalyptic nuclear wasteland theme) Fallout 2 (same as above) Arcanum : of Steamworks and Magick Obsciura (2.5d RPG, steampunk theme) Diablo (2.5d RPG, Demonic theme) Diablo 2 (2.5d RPG/Epic loot grind, Demonic theme) Planescape Torment (2.5d RPG, Demonic theme D&D style) Alpha Centauri (Turn based strategy game, civ style) Sid Meier's Pirates! (Hard to explain this one, an awesome game though) Morrowind (3d FPS/RPG, freeform/non-linear, really expansive expect to sink 200 hours minimum) Freelancer (3d Spaceship flying/fighting game, download the discovery mod and play online on a big ass server) Deus Ex (awesome FPS/RPG hybrid game with a Cyberpunk theme) System Shock 2 (Similar to above with a Sci-i theme, this is where Bioshock came from) World of Goo (Fun indie puzzle game) Dwarf Fortress (The most complex game ever made, as fun as SC2 but difficult to get into) Black & White (Hard to explain, pretty unique game) Hitman series (1st/3rd person shooter, assassinate people. all but Blood Money should run for you)

You should check gog.com (good old games)

Did I misunderstand your stats? Nope.. it just uhh.. works. It takes forever to actually open the game but once it's loaded and stuff I get very usable FPS.

I made a mistake, GreenTeaAI is an AI for SC2; however you can go there: http://www.broodwarai.com/index.php?page=ai#noncheating To download a non-cheating AI, wich will be far better than the regular AI. If you don't know wich one to pick, i suggest Racine.

Mount and Blade and Men of War.
I'm not sure about Men of War but it has been running easily off an i3 with integrated intel HD graphics so it should work.

HEROES OF MIGHT AND MAGIC 3
I love this game to death. If you and a friend have 6+ hours to kill then do some multiplayer on the largest maps.

Civilization Games, from 1-3, I suggest 3 Brood War, obviously Age of Empires 1 and 2, 2 is really good Battle for Wesnoth -----------------------> Awesome game, turn based, strategy, tactics, rpg, and epic campaigns all rolled into one Weewar, browserbased turn based tactics game, one of the best out there and DON'T underestimate it because of its name Warnet.ee, similiar to the above, only just medieval style

Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress.

Throwing a noob into the DotA scene right now would be hilarious to watch. Seriously...don't. I recommend anything by Black Isle/Bioware from the last decade. You can probably run everything before Dragon Age on that thing. Also, SNES/GBA/GBC emulators can be used to great effect on old machines for some quality gaming time.
Like 6 years ago I was playing Dota ROC and seriously, you got flamed so bad if you were new, lol. The only reason I stuck with it was because I was so young I couldn't multitask enough to read the chat and play at the same time.

X-Com UFO defense. Funnest game ever made, system Req's are like 10% of SC1 I imagine lol.
