Try playing as one and you'll see the weakness of the hordes. Once they change leader (legitimate or otherwise) there are a metric fuckton of rebels on every uncored province. I tried playing the timurids or whatever they're called. The red ones. Even on the very easiest settings I got completely overrun by rebels when my king died. Admittedly I overexpanded quite a bit, but still.
I can't imagine what a regency council would be like, if there even is such a thing for hordes.
Hordes have some nasty nasty events to keep them at bay.
The biggest complaints I've seen from the paradox forums is that hordes are too weak in the 5.1 O.o

well in my games the Golden Horde never has any problems with the rebels so yeah it annoys me to no end. Timurids suck because they have so many non horde neighbours. But Golden Horde is simply OP

Golden horde generally expands a bit, and then breaks when it falls behind in tech at maybe about 1500 or so (or when they get a bad war with austria/bohemia, at which point it usually completely disappears.

In my games they mostly seem to get stopped by Bohemia/Teutonic early, and stomped by Austria later. Would definitely not call them OP from what I've seen.

Yeah that's true. Not in mine either to be quite honest.
In my games they're usually stopped by Hungary. Basically people keep paying them tributes until about the 1500s when they get roflstomped by Hungary. In like every single game.
If everyone else in the world is REALLY unlucky, they manage to reach Austria somehow, and that only means that Austria annexes them in the blink of an eye. And then you're gonna have problems standing up to them =/

Yup happened to me in my latest playthrough. Austria got unstoppable in Europe.
The good thing about Hungary getting them is that they're not really interested in European business. They tend to expand eastward if they can, fighting hordes forever basically until they start fighting Ming.

We should put up some AARs (after action reports) on this thread. I'm completely confident the writing skills in TL would blow the paradox forums, which by the way are excellent, out of the water.

I'm just about to go to sleep as it's nearing 4am, so this might be a stupid idea, as most ideas are at this hour, but I'll try to get one going asap.

It'd be awesome if more would join in and tell what they've done and learned. I love reading them, especially if you've accomplished something great with a small nations.
Maybe we could organize a little run with a group of people playing as the knights or something and keep a little diary here and give tips and whatnot.

Just an idea. Love you all, fine folks! ♥

CallAAR Hates You Guys. A Navarra Death and Taxes AAR.

Navarra. A glorious country in the armpit of Iberia. This is the last refuge of the Basque people, after the dirty Castillians to the South and the snail-eaters to the North have kept our people in their bondage. We are in a most frightening state, surrounded are between French, Castillian, and Aragonese territories, with no way out, no way to protect ourselves, and not even an open route to the ocean.

King Carlos the III was a rather mediocre ruler. A bit more concerned with indulging in the great beauties of the Basque people, he nonetheless was competent enough to realize his sorry state of affairs. In order to help compensate for his open fornication, he hired several advisors to help him get his kingdom into shape.

This open fornication of the King’s had led to the birth of his heir, Francisco. While Francisco was conceived by a lady of the court, the king, being a good Catholic, immediately wed her, thus giving Francisco a legitimate bloodline to the throne. He, like his father, would be indulging in man’s oldest activity.

Carlos the III knew very well that Castille would like nothing better than to finish the subjugation of the Basque people to Castillian rule. To that end, he attempted to assuage the Castillian court with gifts of the finest gold, gathered by hard-working merchants in the various trade centres of Europe. To appease these merchants, he completely abolished the last miniscule protective tariff that had been set in place, turning Navarra into one of the most merchant-friendly havens in Europe. To that end, he pardoned a bailiff at the request one of his merchants, despite the (admittedly small) impact it would have on the populace.

That merchant, as a thanks to the king, left in his will a large number of ducats. While some thought that the money should go to promote the arts, the king knew that the money was a thanks for sparing the bailiff and added it to the crown treasury.

Carlos was bored of Basque women after a while, and decided to start meeting women from all parts of Europe. Many women succumbed to the charms of his distant relatives, although he was caught looking at a Sicilian princess’ bosom, resulting in a moment of awkwardness.

After listening to his advisers, Carlos decided to create the 1st Navarre National LeBank. This bank would allow him to print more money from taxing his traders, which in turn let him spend on other things, like money to suck up to the Castillians.

The source of the National Bank idea was a man named Esteban de Azagra. Born in Navarre, he had studied in Switzerland, and had learned much about trading and the like there. After having passed on his idea to the king, Carlos elevated him to a formal adviser. He recommended his colleague, Diego de Albret, to the court as well. Born the son of a sheriff, Diego quickly developed a knack for dealing with high amounts of paperwork and the other intricacies of rule.

Meanwhile, the French had humiliated the Burgundians in one of the stages of what would be known as the Hundred Years War. Carlos was concerned that without a strong rival, the French would soon be amassing on his border. But for now, France was still fractured and weak, and there were other problems that needed to be dealt with. Like Castille.

After humiliating Portugal, Castille looked hungrily at the Basque homeland. Fortunately, before the Castillian king could declare war and wipe Navarra off the face of the map, he choked on his words and died, leaving his daughter at the tender age of 6 to rule. A regency council took his place, but it was unlikely that in the confusion they would be able to invade Navarra anytime soon.

Carlos decided to further centralize his control over Navarre by declaring himself the supreme and direct ruler of all Navarre. Several landowners disapproved of this and revolted. Fortunately, when they attempted to occupy the financial district, they ran into the Navarrean Royal Guard, whom, being the disciplined and diligent guards of Navarre, threw them out using cavalry charges and tear gas.

Occupy Navarra Street, Three Days Later

Meanwhile, corrupt officials tried to have their way with some of Carlos’ harem. Carlos did not approve of this, and had them executed, despite criticism that the king was being hypocritical for sleeping with many women.

Seeking to replace the aging Philosopher Ursua, Carlos challenged all the philosophers in his realm to a debate against each other. Luis Jiminez de Rada quickly distinguished himself amongst his competitors, suggesting that as they were not real, they did not exist, and thus they had no say in the debate.

This was one of the last acts of Carlos, as he died of a heart attack after reaching orgasm in his favorite concubine. Francisco takes the throne, bringing his oldest son, Enrique, with him.

As Castille’s king is about to assume control of the throne, whom knows what will happen to Navarra? Will we see Navarra triumph over a Castillian death legion? Or, more likely, will Caller fuck up badly and die terribly? Tune in next time...

AAR The Horde rides again

The Horde is weak. Many years have passed since our Great Khan Ghengis. His worthless sons destroyed the Mongol empire in their struggle for power. The time is ready to rebuild our Mongol empire!

We are at war with the Mandchu who threaten to destroy our last remaining lands in the heart of mongolia. For now we have no choice but to wait until we have enough money to recruit mercenaries to destroy these village building fools.

The lands to the south are rich and properous. We can not conquer them yet and in order to secure funds for the mercenaries our Khan decided to send merchants towards Nanjing and start the minting of more money.

Six years passed in which we build up a great fortune and started recruiting mercenaries. The foolish Mandchu thought they could settle in our lands. But the time has come to strike them back and destroy them!

The battle was short and successful. The weak mandchu footsoldiers had no chance against our cavalery and the pyramids of their cut off heads grew towards the skies. Over 6000 of them died in the first encounter and after that the rest of them tried to flee but noone escapes the horde.

The cowardly Ming used the time when our armies were not at home and stormed our lands. We had no chance but to concede defeat and pay them tributes.

5 years later I die because of rebels

The Reign of King Francisco I

Navarra’s economy was booming. Merchants flowed through the trade centers of Europe, and investment was at an all time high. The First Navarran LeBank had paid dividends from some of these loans to the treasury.

In addition, Luis Jimenez de Rada, the court philosopher, published a treatise on Plato’s earlier work, the Republic. He questioned Plato’s belief that reality is based off truth, and what we see is merely perception: rather, he claimed that reality is solely our perception. Such a critique earned him high praise among the courts of Europe and brought Navarra a much needed view into the limelight. Perhaps if we become well-known enough, more nations will help us against Castille.

As it is, they are at war with Sardinia, so they likely won’t come knocking on our door any time soon.

The English King, George Lancaster, was impressed with de Rada’s work and enquired more as to the country of Navarra. When he found that it was in danger from Castille, one of his strongest rivals, he met with King Francisco and agreed to guarantee Navarra’s independence and autonomy from the rest of the Iberian peninsula.

Castille, clearly frustrated by this latest interference into what it considered its sphere of influence, invaded Portugal instead.

In order to appease Castille’s warmongering Queen Juana, King Francisco arranged it so that they would be able to have military access through our country to reach other targets. While it was unnerving to have Castillian troops marching through Navarra, it also, ironically, protected Navarra from direct invasion.

War was no doubt coming to Navarra, however. Navarra had been quite peaceful for sometime, however: thus, King Francisco decided to have another jousting tournament, even as the role of knights shrank in modern warfare. He hoped that this tournament will bear champions whom could lead an army, to fight for Navarra, and triumph over all odds. Which, given Castille’s position, seemed necessary.

Another one of Navarra’s wealthy merchant class died. The money was to go towards the funding of his son as a scholar: however, since the son had also died of grief, the crown took it upon itself to use the money.

Several Nobles came to King Francisco with an interesting proposition: in return for providing the crown with a large amount of ducats, the nobles would be able to centralize control of the church lands under their control. King Francisco initially considered refusing but determined that the amount of ducats they stood to gain was more than the amount they would lose, and accepted.

Meanwhile, another court thinker, Esteban de Azagra, published the crowning work of his career, La riquesa de les nacions. He argued that the Navarran free-market system was the most productive system that was available, and cited both domestic and international mechanisms of why this was so. It was celebrated as one of the first economics texts and led to the creation of the Navarra School, where like-minded thinkers discussed the values and applications of free-market economics.

In foreign affairs, Castille had soundly defeated both Aragon and Portugal, demanding the fine vineyards of Northern Portugal and humiliating the Aragonese.

It was this latter fact that Francisco realized presented a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. With no army, Aragon was helpless. Francisco hired some French mercenaries and declared war on Aragon, citing a recent trade dispute as the casus belli. Within the month, almost all of Aragon was under siege, and the few troops the exhausted Aragonese were able to scrape up were low on morale, hungry, and trapped to the south, near the crack Navarra cavalry.

A desperate attack by the Aragonese army into the Navarran cavalry decided the war. The two regiments of conscripted infantry had to ford across a river, arriving at the field tired and wet. The Navarran commander, Andres Febo de Beortegui, was the winner of the jousting tournament King Francisco had ordered a few years earlier. He had won the jousting tournament in a rather crude way, distracting his opponent by seducing his woman in front of him, and then exploiting his opponents’ rage to his advantage. While many watchers claimed that such dirty tactics were not chilvarous at all, King Francisco knew such sneakiness would be useful in a commander. Needless to say, upon observing the dilapidated state of the Aragonese, General Beortegui gathered 3000 of his cavalry and rushed upon them before they could encamp. It was a slaughter, such that the cavalry formation headed into the next province before realizing that the enemy was already dead.

Needless to say, Aragon was crushed. At the Treaty of Barcelona (1430), King Francisco demanded the rich provinces of Aragon and Lleida as his prize for his victory, despite international concern. A subsequent Aragonese revolt was quickly quelled by Navarran troops.

Navarra, 1430)

Having seen the war to a conclusion, King Francisco thus died less than a year later, exhausted. But he had given Navarra hope. And that hope would lead to a future.

THE KING IS DEAD, LONG LIVE THE KING!

my brain had to wrap around the forcefields first but I think what you are looking for is bonus to force limit. The buildings you can build in the military tree do not increase that afaik. They increase the reinforcements you can see at the top left corner of your screen.

To increase your maximum army size you have to conquer new provinces, get vassals or to the national idea which gives you 33% higher army limit.
