360 version is the safest way to go, since most tournaments are on 360 anyways (Evo is on PS3 though!) and you can always add in the CHIMP if you really need it (or have someone do it for you).
Most tournaments are on 360?? That's news to me. Every one I've been to has been on PS3 =( I think that might be a west coast thing though.

It doesn't matter since the stick configurations are the same anyway (not may people use the analog stick to play, let alone at a tourney)
I'm trying to pick up Honda, and I had a quick question about charge in general:
If I hold down back long enough to charge a headbutt (I really don't know the exact time, but lets assume I held it for 2 seconds, more than enough time), and I release it to walk forward or dash or whatever, do I lose my charge? Or can I immediately wiggle back to forward and get a headbutt?
Never played a charge character, and this learning curve is kicking my ass.
On a brighter note, Honda does shit tons of damage. Even though the people I play are probably (definitely) better than me, I get so many free wins off Akuma/Oni/Evil Ryu just because their health is so low.
It's 55 frames (0.9167 seconds) to charge Honda's moves. If you start walking forward, the charge is gone until you charge it up again. The key is to be charging while attacking, while whiffing any kind of normal or special, while in blockstun, while in the air, etc. Honda is relatively good just sitting there in downback with a life lead, but you're probably going to have to get up to gain that lead. cr.lp, cr.lp xx hp hundred hands, s.hp, s.hk, and oicho throw mean that he has a decent ground game and footsies despite being a charge character and not having the fastest walk speed. To use these normals properly when the situation calls, you're going to have to give up the charge temporarily.
However, the SF4 engine is pretty lenient regarding inputting special moves and particularly supers and ultras. It's possible to charge back, dash forward, hit back in the middle of the dash, and hit forward again + punches as the dash ends, to get an ultra out (or super but not special move). This is useful sometimes for fighting fireball characters (with a good read, dash forward and ultra right through their next fireball right as it comes out) but not particularly something you need to learn ASAP.

Rather than all PS3 in the past, a lot of tournaments are swapping to 360 now whether it be PS3 slowdowns, xboxlive popularity, console preference of local scene etc.
Examples of Tournaments which ran SF4 / MVC3 on Xbox Majors: CEO 2011, ReveLAtions, Shadowloo Showdown 2k11 Regular: WNF, Guard Crush
Also dual modding (making it ps3/360 compatible) a 360 stick is easier as you dont need to rip a pcb out of a xbox controller.

I was more referring to sticks rather than pads. I went to a KS2 tournament and NCR8 and NCR9 here and they were all using PS3s, which sucked because I brought my 360 stick and couldn't use it (thankfully my friend had a dualmodded one). Dualmodding is supposed to be easy when going from 360->PS3 but it's still money and time :>

And yeah, changing the price of pre-orders without automatically refunding your customers is pretty fucked up, but oh well, happy to get it at a lower price than expected. I seldom buy Steam games outside of sales, but I hope stuff like this gets more publicized because they basically dominate the market atm.
Edit: Won't let me re-order, lol. Might have to contact my bank.
You have to be fucking kidding me... I checked steam just now, and SSFIVAE is an additional 33% off now, a full 10€ cheaper in Europe. My order apparently went through even though it clearly said it didn't work when I bought it, so basically I just paid 10€ more than it is now hours later, AGAIN. I'm guessing steam support will not be helpful this time around.
Great news for anyone who has yet to buy the game though.

Are talking magically POOF it's gone? Or, if I release for 10 frames I only have to charge for 10 frames to get back to full charge?
The way you described the dash forward > ultra makes me think it's more the latter.

Every time you lose charge, you have to recharge all the way from 0 again. Dash ultra is a different concept because you're technically charging for the full amount of time, but instead of forward back forward you're pressing forward forward back forward, which initiates a dash. The ultra command is still buffered (because SF4 has a long buffer window) and after your dash completes you just press PPP to start the ultra.
Right, for dash ultra you're doing a dash in the middle as part of the ultra input, so that's a special case. The game looks back long enough such that it'll accept that entire slow sequence as a legitimate ultra input so it'll give you the ultra.
If you could charge, walk forwards and backwards, and retain enough charge (read: you can't), then you could pull out an EX headbutt like whenever you wanted, and that would be retarded.
edit: you'd also get a lot of charge moves out by accident in general

lol reminds me when i first started picking up mvc2 anakaris, i would airblock and then pushblock and try to dash forward, only to waste a meter doing his b,f super D:

EDIT: Was just venting
Yeah its pretty stupid, I had it preordered for 30€ too. Douche move from whoever is in charge of the pricing because screwing over the people who prepurchase and that way put faith into the developers is just bad. I have written a mail to steam support, but my gut tells me that I'm not gonna get that money back.

You kinda could move forward/backward with charge partitioning in 3rd strike though IIRC.

Matchmaking is almost entirely at the hands of the user. You can create a lobby and anyone can join it. You can also search for a lobby using the criteria All, More Skilled, or Same Skill, and that compares your Player Points to the PP of other open lobbies to find your matches. Player Points are basically an Elo type of system that doesn't carry the weighting or grinding that BP (per-character Battle Points) does and generally represent your skill level as a player.
DId any 1 catch shadowloo showdown ? Poongko made momochi his bitch. I was amazed at how he catched so many backdashes with his tandem engine after doing a cr.hp or close st.hp.
