Stay free.
Cammy the new Yun yo. Who needs footsies? EX Kick and fierce frame traps all day.

T_T Online Kens with psychic powers... Going for your combo? I'm going to mash it out hoping you drop it! Oh, you're baiting a DP by not finishing your combo? Well, too bad because I can tell if you're baiting or not!
Drives me nuts!

Cammy ain't that good. best character in the game I'd say, but nowhere near the level of power that AE Yun had. that shit was actually broken.
the myth that "cammy doesnt need footsies" or that chi-rithy beat those guys without excellent footsies is retarded also

Current Cammy isn't even close to AE Yun lol, just think about the two for a second. Yun had insane meter building, a divekick that could be done at any height, with 3 different angles. A very fast command grab, could link 3/4 strongs into a DP. One EX-meter gives him a fast full screen high damage attack that is +1 on block, can combo into his ultra without FADC'ing, and his super, which once again, built very fast, gave him 600 damage without resetting.

Drives me nuts! If you see someone go for hard combos/optimising damage, make him prove his execution to you. I usually mash during a combo once just to maybe make them lose confidence. After that its usually too risky even with meter, but at that point the damage is done.
Playing on AE PC and Cammy players pretty much are the new Ryu army. Pretty tedious, but at least you can safejump them much easier.

I know that, but they mash during my easy combos that I just mess up because I haven't played in a few days, so I'm rusty.

Then again I'm awful as well, maybe I shouldn't have stopped playing for 2 months. Always mess up ultra timing + never antiair with c.HP vs crossup + always drop combo into mash + always try to poke vs ultra masher too stronk . At least I don't lose fireball wars anymore ...

that's the other thing, if you're losing to an awful cammy, no complaining. learn the matchup.
now, all the local edmonton players know how to block cammy's divekick, and it's an actual match. that's because I play cammy and I blew everybody up until they figured out how to block those divekick setups. it's not too hard, it's just freeeeeeeeeee damage if you don't know how

Thinking about picking this game up (for Xbox) and also a fightstick to play this and UMvC3, is it approachable for a complete newbie?

You're going to suck for a long time and then you're still going to suck. If you're ok with that, go for it. I love fighting games even though I'm just a pot monster. Chobo tier for life, homie.

Starting out playing Street Fighter can be quite harsh as there are a lot of mechanics to learn before the game starts getting fun. Guilty Gear is coming out next wednesday on XBL though, which is a fast-paced air-dasher which is a lot of fun playing even on a low level. It's a great appetizer for fighting games in general.

To be fair, GG is a more technical and difficult game than SF4, but I agree that it's more enjoyable at a low level. If you're coming from UMvC3 and want to find a new fighter, the most approachable one for you is probably Persona 4 Arena. If you like Street Fighter though, play it, and don't let difficulty deter you.

The srkFADCultra (or whatever your duders version is) will haunt your dreams, but you must persevere, friend!

How do you recommend a newbie pick up this game and start learning? Gamefaqs? Youtube? Button mash until pro?

watch Air's Guide to Ryu, even if you don't plan to play Ryu, you can see how a good player breaks down the game
pick a character that you like, learn their basic BnBs (post which character you choose and I can totally help out), learn their normals inside and out. always remember the power of doing nothing (that is, chilling out for a sec and letting your opponent take the initiative, at low levels especially they will do something risky as fuck and you can capitalize).
think quickly while playing, look for patterns in your opponent's gameplay

The memories of me picking up SF4 last year. forward jump HK into sweep... That's how I used to play SF2 as a kid.
He's right though, after the initial nostalgia I had of playing Ryu, I decided to do a little bit of research and noticed that a lot of people will press buttons because they are impatient. Be the better man, (I know it's hard) learn to be patient and to just let the enemy do unforced errors. It happens very often at entry level.

Today I Learned: This isn't how you're supposed to do things.

On October 20 2012 04:12 ddrddrddrddr wrote: How do you recommend a newbie pick up this game and start learning? Gamefaqs? Youtube? Button mash until pro? For playing against beginners, these skills will be good to have:
Learn to antiair. Beginners like jumping. Timing antiair normals / SRKs is free damage. Many people don't learn, and after they do they don't know what to do on the ground and will play poorly there.
Learn to block. Blocking high against a jump and low afterwards is essential. Holding down back most of the time when in range of enemy is essential as well, many people love spamming sweep.
Learn to tech throws. Many beginner players love throws as punishments instead of bigger comboes. Things like you missing SRK -> Them punishing with throw happen all the time.
Learn to bait reversals. Beginners love mashing out SRKs. Blocking them will give you a free punish.
Learn one combo for punishment and one for hit confirming. The punish combo you use for punishing moves like missed Shoryukens, the hit confirm combo you use when you're not sure if your combo will hit the enemy. It's really easy to find simple examples of both for all characters.
After that you're good to concentrate on mostly zoning and poking :3 Post here for most character-specific things.
Also I really wish I would have better control with my stick, I miss fast ultra inputs and even Shoryukens all tie time ... And I press down diagonally more often than straight down, stupid square gate -_-

Easy Ryu/Guy/Cody punish/hit confirm combos go.
