Similarly, when they're knocked down, I'm not sure how to pressure with a meaty lk.tatsu that everyone seems to talk about.

Oftentimes I go for hit confirms into shouken but if they block it, the only things I usually do are attempt to grab or jump back to be safe. On the other hand, I see better Sakura players do block strings to push the opponent back or do some shenanigans with lk.tatsu, but I have no idea how to do either properly. I'm always afraid they'll just stick in an invincible move somewhere in there and punish me for it. However you should message the resident sakura expert fakesteve. Hopefully he will swoop in answer your questions. Edit: Walk up and throw -> set up some silly unblockable

http://shoryuken.com/forum/index.php?threads/sakura-setups-and-safe-jumps.149165/ Sakura isn't really a rush down heavy character, she usually will play in an attempt to beat people in footsies, and then open people up with a mixup after she scores a knockdown. Unless you are always hitting her ambiguous cross ups, you will have to take risks when pressuring that you may eat an invincible reversal. That will always be the case. Don't be predictable in your pressure, just be willing to stop and block when you get the feeling a reversal is coming. Thankfully, if you have the execution, she can punish a predicted reversal harder than just about any character using her lk tatsu loops. I think her jab hits most crouching characters, so common tick throw setups are to standing jab, throw, lk tatsu, throw, EX tatsu, throw, (st. LK===>lk. tatsu also beats any attempts they might make at a throw tech) EX DP, FADC, throw changing up your rhythm, even if that means using certain odd normals, walking back a step, then walking foward in order to throw, or whatever you can come up with, can go a long way to breaking anybodies throw defense. Otherways to open up her opponents are Fireballs (they can't take chip dmg forever) Focus attacks Dash foward==> throw, or look for hit confirms Empty jump at a range where if they go for an anti air it will whiff, cr. MK(as soon as you land) ==> cancel into something like HP DP, ex. tatsu, fireball Certainly not exhaustible but using some tricks above, and above all being able to whiff punish your opponent during footsie, and consistently anti air when they jump, you could take your game really far

Ex: j.HK, cr.lp, cr.lk, walk up throw (do it too early and you'll whiff the throw. It happens since when you do cr.jab/short and try to throw right after, they'll be in blockstun so it'll miss. Timing is very important.

Speaking of which, this song is relevant to your interests. But yeah I do the same thing as you, just let them mash their SRK, and don't try to hit your 1 frame links against them.

It makes me despise Ken. The boring, white-ass way he says "shoryuken" just seems so trolly when you're getting hit by this kind of shit hahaha. Ughhhhhh.

That feeling is worse with Dan and even more so with El Fuerte, but how every other guy out there spams those shoryukens and even wins because of the damage is infuriating lol. On another note I beat my first A ranked player today, hold the applause haha. I still suck though and got lucky, so no worries. The videos of the Top 5 Yang team in the Topanga Cup helped me alot to reflect on the Yang play I think.

I'm having serious issues with her gameplay, such as storing fuhajins while still doing things like her shikusen or senpusha. I'm also having problems getting timing on combos down, I feel like I'm going fast enough but a lot of times I'll drop combos, for example EX shikusen into U2, I apparently input just a little too slowly and I whiff the ultra. I assume that things like this will get better with time, but out of curiosity are there any characters that I should realistically not expect to be able to play well until I have a stick?

you get so much more damage and mixup opportunity out of victories in footsies than any other character, so that ought to be your goal. getting in someone's face and spamming tatsu blockstrings is effective in low-level play, but gets you nowhere against strong competition. you need to work on your throw game and the mindgames that surround it - a lot of times i'll catch people by just doing c.lk c.jab, walk backwards, c.mk to whiff punish their jab/c.lk/whatever, but it goes in stages. First you have to train them to hit buttons while theyre blocking - that's what the throw is for. once the threat of throw is established, the opponent will have to start attempting to tech or beat out your throw, which means you can either frame trap to counterhit his tech attempt, or bait his reversal and punish. whichever option you choose has to be based on previous information - this is why conditioning your opponent is extremely important with Sakura. if you're not setting the pace, you're gonna lose more often than not. This relationship is cyclical and there will come a point in every match where throw becomes the smartest option once again. it's about reading your opponent. just remember the trinity in this game. block > attack > throw > block
