Was going to step in and support the MadCatz TE Soul Edition I picked up recently on a deal ($60 off, happens frequently during major tournaments) but this linked deal is also way too good to pass up for newer players interested in getting a stick.

Mm I think my stick I ordered is coming with a square gate, which isn't as good for roll players? I play ryu should I purchase an 8 way gate(they use this on tekken and SC arcades don't they) ?

I'm relatively new to the whole scene and sticks, but here's my input.
A lot of people use the square gates, and it's really just a matter of preference and getting used to it. However, I strongly disliked the way it felt, in AE (which I was brand new to STARTING on stick) and Marvel (which I had played much previously on pad). I picked up octagonal gate and round gate inserts from here, and after putting in the octogate first I've never looked back. It felt so much better to me and I could feel every input much cleaner. Ultra/super inputs went from being a complete headache to very natural, and every direction is tactile and clean. If you don't like the feel of the square gate, I highly recommend trying these inserts. They're hella cheap too anyway, so why not?

Hahaha so I just got myself a Mad catz sfxtekken fightstick(first time using an arcade stick ever) and it was like going back down from C to D-.
I guess it's really just a matter of getting used to the inputs, the buttons are much further apart compared to a keyboard and the stick is completely different to inputting moves. I think after some practice it'll be easier to perform moves with the stick.
Not like I gathered much skill in a week, so it's not as bad as playing for months on k/b then switching over to arcade stick.

If you think about all the money you saved NOT paying to play online, you will come out on the plus side of things

I decided not to start with Viper -__- Seemed really hard from the whop ass I got online heh. I've been playing Ken for a couple of days now and I like him a lot now. Can almost 100% all my special moves when I'm in tight spots. Definitely making progress every day I think. Was just curious if someone had a good idea of when to ultra2? Obviously if I manage to block really good or if someone whiffs but is there a good attack combo I can do that opens the window for ultra to be used and not get blocked?
Also a dumb question. I was watching some twitch.tv stream of someone playing Ken and he managed to tornado kick across the entire screen while staying far up in the air. How the hell do you do that? Everytime I jump forward, instant tornado kick I lose altitude like shit. Maybe I'm remembering it wrong but I think he was backed up in a corner and just tornado kicked the hell out of there across the screen.

So I just bought this in the Steam sales (also wtf 9GB download for a fighter? )
I have played Fighting Games before, but only super casual "I know 2 combos and rest is mash buttons" style. Is there any place that's a good resource for starting from the ground up?

I've heard of some special key, do I need that? Or can I just order the gate itself?

Does anyone know good places to get Sticks in UK? It seems more expensive relative to the US to order sticks from Amazon, and I none of the deals which occur during tournaments apply in the UK.

@DwD: Ultra 2 through fireballs at the midscreen range. You can combo to it off a Jab (I think. 1 frame link). You can also crouch middle kick xx fireball FADC Ulta 2.
For ken, probably if you block something like a shoryuken, you should do something like Heavy Punch xx H. Shoryuken, naked h. shoryuken, or sweep (cr. heavy kick) at least. (Its pretty hard to hit with Ultra 2 imo... unless they did an Ultra and you blocked it..)
You preferably combo into it.
@IMABUNNEH: Choose a character and head over to shoryuken.com and read up on your character. Do the Trials for your character first. Try to finish all of them. Maybe you can skip Trials 20-24 for now. It'll give you some idea of what your character can do.
Shoryuken SFIV Forum Footsies Handbook
If you want to start with Ryu (gives you a solid foundation) Air's Ryu Guide
Simple things: learn to block. learn to hit people out of the air when they jump. try not to jump unless they are knocked down.

To the guy above, I wouldn't advise trials for a new player, they don't explain shit, you have no idea how you're supposed to get from one move to the next if you don't know prior or look it up.

On the contrary. They explain a lot. They may not always be practical, but they teach you a lot about the properties of your moves to set you on the right track. They also teach you about exotic moves you wouldn't normally use.

That ryu guide helped a TON.
@Lyter I think that doing trials with youtube open ready to see how they are done(for later ones/ones that require cancels) is very useful/helpful for new players(helped me).

The only "special tool" I've ever heard of is the type of wrench you'll need to open your stick, which depends on the brand probably. As far as the gates themselves, it's pretty straightforward if you use a video to help you out. Again this is with a Mad Catz stick specifically, so I can't say for sure. I would just Google something related to your stick brand/model and installing gates / restrictor plates. If you find the products on Focus Attack's site they have some video installation links and possible notes on which sticks and parts they work with.

Superjump tatsu and you'll fly right outta the corner.

Uhh... not sure on this one (Ken does not superjump lol)
But you just have to input it quite fast. You need to tatsu while you're still moving upward. Easiest way I just did it was basically a really fast 360 motion starting with forward jump and ending with the tatsu (Hurricane Kick) motion, like 963214K. Easy on stick / pad, might be weird on a keyboard.
