Dang that was actually an informative, neutral news article from a game magazine in 2021 from someone who seems to have played the original that didn't just link other articles. Wonders do happen, the author of the last one I read failed at 8th grade math.
And it was pretty amusing that it was that easy. On the other hand ease of manipulation always speaks for easy modding, so if it doesn't speak for easy duping this is a good thing. I hope neither VV nor the playerbase escalate this.
Anyone who wants to try the Alpha still can(as of now). Not sure if it is appropriate to link here though as it is not exactly playing by Blizzard's rules.
Pretty nice analysis of the current and upcoming ARPG landscape. I must say I'm pretty thrilled for LE when it comes out. I hope D2R comes out before that so I can get my nostalgia fix before I delve into something more elaborate.

I had never heard of Last Epoch until your post
I've learned about it myself recently. Bought the early access even though I'm waiting for full release to start playing it. Overall seems like a great game for me where it's more complex than D2 and has more stuff to do but isn't as daunting or fast-paced as PoE. Seems like a good middle ground for more casual play as I no longer have as much time to sink into games as I used to.

Grim Dawn is a bit different. It's more of a single player experience without ladder and significant endgame. Also, despite it being a great game with great mechanics I'm not super fond of its setting (victorian era not for everyone).
Still a good game if you want to break the monotony but more of a niche thing.
GD probably isn't compared because D3 and PoE have the largest ARPG player numbers and this guy wants to talk about LE (and shit on d3).
GD has problems with enemy variety and the same problems TQ had, i.e. 17 different damage types you only want two of limiting build variety and too low enemy numbers and movement speed. You also spam basically the same 2-3 spells all game long and the only thing that changes is that they get more stuff that can procc on them. The class-skills are very limited and flat and spells are mostly a way to procc your stellar tree.
There are some cool parts, like the stellar tree is overall very cool and mathing your build out is really rewarding in that regard, something I find very tedious in PoE because it all feels so incremental in the latter with very few real capstones. You get a bonus skill from your gear that can supplement your build, which is also fun. But overall it feels to me like a game where they had a bunch of really good ideas and then limited the possibilities to play around with these too much.
That being said the two friends I play with on occasion both liked it a lot.
On a side note on the PoE part of the video: Am I farming too much? I never had problems with Merveil and the only boss that kills me a lot is Kitava, who I still think is multiple times harder than every other boss until then.
Thanks for the info, you two! I am all a bit tangential to gaming these days but seeing a sale for Grim Dawn almost pulled me back in, glad to have some more perspective on this.

Well, if it's on sale then I'd still suggest getting it. It's quite fun if you want some casual ARPG solo experience. The problems outlined above don't really come into play until much later into the game where you're trying to minmax and optimize your build.
And for people interested in LE I think this video illustrates it quite well and pretty much echoes my sentiments:
Yeah I agree with Manit0 that Grim Dawn is definitely worth trying if you get it on sale, as mentioned I know people who loved it and I personally don't think it's bad by any means. Like I mentioned there are parts that are amazing. It's just one of the games where some things bug me a lot because they don't work the way I think would be much better.
Thanks on the LE vid Manit0, might pick this up. Currently looking a bit for a game I can play for an hour and get a feeling of progression and I like hybrid characters, so the character building sounds good to me. I don't particularly like crafting systems, but I guess it's still better than being reliant on trading like in PoE.
Also call me a heretic but I want uniques and sets to be better than any alternative 99% of the time. I hear a lot of people citing normal items being competitive to uniques as a good point and while I get that reliance on uniques can make farming a bit tedious, I want to see the unique drop and be happy that I found something amazing. I hate that in PoE I don't wear 90% of the uniques I find.

I also like uniques and sets but I think it's kinda hard to balance out. I absolutely hate D3 approach where your entire build is basically defined by the set you're wearing.
I guess if you make normal items on par with uniques/sets so that you can choose the way you want to go freely would be nice (like, having less bonuses on normal items but those bonuses being more powerful so you can either cover more bases with a set or hyper-specialize with normal items).
Also, I think crafting in LE is fine as it doesn't replace regular loot (you can craft affixes/suffixes on items up to T5 whereas you can get up to T7 from drops). I think this is quite good approach as you can pretty much craft gear that you can use in the endgame but if you want to top the ladder etc. you then have to find better stuff. So, you can craft to get strong and enable yourself for endgame but there's a cap on that. I look at it as a more controlled way to get the gear for your build that will enable true endgame without relying on RNG alone.

You want something like chase unique is around 70-80 percent of the power of a perfectly rolled rare. This gives you items that are powerful, but still something to chase for besides the same item with different stats. Path of Exile was in a pretty good place in that regard until the conquerors of the atlas were added and the influenced bases completely trashed basically every unique item in the game. Suddenly there are rare items that have affixes you get get on uniques and additionally roll other important stats power creeping them out of the game. This is most easily spotted in the weapons category as even a perfect stat unique weapon is trash compared to the dps you can roll on a mediocre rare base.
The hardest part of an aRPG is power creeping things because you want to get better and more interesting things over the years, but not in a way that destroys the old systems in the game.
