My "town" has several homes now; I have the guide, the merchant and the nurse, managed to forge some iron/silver/gold equipment already and found/built some interesting stuff (boomerang, grappling hook, magic mirror). However, I seem to be desperately short on health and mana. So far, I've crafted a single +20 mana star, and found only one health heart somewhere underground. I've explored my little world in all directions and can't progress further east (corruption), west (hellstone) or south (lava/fire-shooting wtfimba enemies). All enemies beyond the standard slimes or zombies are either too tough or deal too much damage for me to survive; and I'm in full iron armor and wielding a gold broadsword, so I think I'm not completely unprepared. Any advice how to get more health?

Any advice how to get more health? You will need to seach different caves and underground systems for hearts in order to get more health. If you are having trouble surviving i would reccomend that you make alot of health potions. If you dont know how to make potions look up the terraria wiki .

The problem is that I've dug quite a number of pits and shafts, several of them leading down to the Underworld, and I've only found a single heart. I realize that I have to dig to find stuff, but I find my quota to be pretty bad.

The enemies are pretty strong but quite immobile so you shouldnt have that much problems even with low health. And you might also want to build a house there so that you dont have to walk again everytime you die. Theres also loads of other cool stuff to be found in the jungle

I suggest just don't dig as many tunnels and try find caves. Go laterally and look for some caves. Can normally find a few hearts like that. Although the new worlds seem a bit different with hearts.

My initial difficulties with enemy damage and my own health quickly vanished after I found out about Spelunker potions. After seeing the recipe on the Terraria wiki, I quickly crafted some from the materials I had in stock and proceded to find several chest, hearts and tons of ore. I found that the game progressed very rapidly once you reach a certain level of equipment. From the point that I crafted my first phase blade, it took me substantially less time in total to: - craft meteor armor, hellstone weapons and tools, shadow armor - defeat all bosses - pillage multiple dungeons than I had spent in the game before. Especially the weapons make a tremendous difference; where trying to defeat Skeletron with a phase blade and a Ball'O'Hurt took me the complete night and 20 health pots, doing so with a Fiery Greatsword and Molten Fury took two minutes and three potions. Also, some of the equipment found later on is ridiculously strong, like the Muramasa, while the supposed "best sword in the game", the Night's Edge, plain sucks considering the alternatives and the difficulty of acquiring the parts (I crafted one after finding my second Muramasa). What I'd like to see in future updates is a difficulty choice for more challenging games, more bosses, and maybe some sort of aoe mining with advanced pickaxes (like mining 2 or 4 blocks of "soft" materials like dirt instead of just one).
