GLaDOS was based on a woman who was working for Aperture back in the sixties. Chell was in grade school when GLaDOS took over the facility in the following millenium, (one of the potato battery science projects is by a girl named Chell). Caroline/GLaDOS would have been too old at that point to be her mother as she would be in her 50s at least. + Show Spoiler +not sure what kind of calculations you are making, but im pretty sure glados was indeed chell's mother and Cave Johnson the father. + Show Spoiler + My calculations are fine. The first era of retro tests date to 1968. Caroline/GLaDOS was already working at Aperture. Let's say she is 18, we'll be generous. That would mean she would was born about 1950.
Now GLaDOS took over Aperture some time in the 2000s and locked people getting in or out. That actually happened on Aperture's take your daughter to work day and early in Portal 2 you can see the science experiments of the school girls. If you look carefully one of the projects is by Chell, and the handwriting suggests she is about the age 6-7.
Assuming GLaDOS took over as early as possible (2000) that would mean Chell was born around 1994. Caroline would have been 44. Late but not impossible. And that's with the most generous of calculations. Caroline was likely older than that and GLaDOS's takeover was later in the decade. Which would push Caroline into her 50s when Chell was born.
Also the fact Chell was even at take your daughter to work day means she has a dad working at aperture. And Cave Johnson died back in the eighties sue to the inhalation of poisonous moon rocks.
+ Show Spoiler +How do you know GLaDOS takeover happened after 2000? + Show Spoiler + + Show Spoiler +I think it's more likely that Portal 1 runs alongside HL1, especially since the world has apparently arrived at an apocalyptic scenario(Seven Hour War/Combine invasion) based on the VI's comments during chapter 1 of Portal 2. In Portal 1 GLaDOS could have been referring to the portal storms and Xen invasions that happened during/after HL1, or it could be something else entirely.
Totally unrelated to anything, but apparently the name Caroline means "Free man." I'm not sure if that's a hint or if Valve is just toying with us. + Show Spoiler +Yeah that'd make a lot of sense as well, though the timeline stuff still wouldn't line up all that much would it? I thought HL2 was only a couple of years after HL1. While Portal 2 is a looooonnnnggg time after Portal 1 + Show Spoiler +HL2 takes place in 202X, while HL1 takes place in 200X, Valve's never given us exact years. If the wake-up call at the beginning of the game wasn't simply malfunctioning and the 9999 days it gave was accurate, Portal 2 takes place roughly 27 years after Portal 1, putting it at least in the same decade as HL2. Its been publically stated that Portal 2 is hundreds of years after the events of Portal 1. I believe it was valve that made this statement. *shrug* I'd think the facility would be in significantly worse shape had it gone hundreds of years without a caretaker, it might've just been an oversight on Valve's part though.
GLaDOS was the caretaker of the facility

If you didn't notice during the first section + Show Spoiler +there was some sort of general purpose AI not use for testing, but for at least emergency purposes. And the nanites may or may not have been active, as you only hear about them after the reactivation

Game was amazing. A few points that really made it awesome for me: + Show Spoiler + 1. The intro. Holy shit Glados' resurrection sent chills down my spine. Amazingly well presented. 2. The scope. I know it hurt the "immersion" for many players, but I loved how epic in scale the Aperture facilities are. Like in Blame!, the sheer size of the facilities really impressed me. 3. The ending. I mean, I portal'd to the moon how fucking cool is that?! 4. Glados: "Goodbye, sir" was actually pretty sad ;_;

Is it just me, or is the portal gun superluminal? There should have been a slight delay. DAMN YOU VALVE!

Awesome, SP took me 6 hours exactly and then went to do co-op with a friend of mine, both completed now and both were awesome and a lot of fun.
I do miss challenges, where are they?
Still, some of the parts were just hilarious:
+ Show Spoiler + Wheatley: BIRD! BIRD! BIRD! BIRD!
Glados: Ah bird! Bird! Kill it! It's evil!
Wheatley: Oh for gods sake, you're BOXES with LEGS! All you have to do is walk onto the button, how can you NOT do the one thing you're designed to do?
Glados: And all we had to do was pull that lever. Wheatley: No you had to...*GAAAAHHHH* Glados: We might soon die, but that was worth it.
And ofcourse the defective turrets, so funny.

Such a superb game. Worth. Every. Cent.

You can prob check combine overwiki + Show Spoiler +Combine Overwiki says that the Black Mesa event happened a few days after Bring Your Daughter to Work Day (or the day GLaDOS became self aware)
"In May 200-, the untested AI of GLaDOS is activated for the first time as one of the planned activities on Aperture's first annual bring-your-daughter-to-work day. Upon being activated, she almost instantly becomes self-aware, takes control of the facility, locks everyone inside, floods the Enrichment Center with a deadly neurotoxin, but is partially halted when she is quickly fitted with a Morality Core. She then begins a permanent cycle of testing, aimed at beating Black Mesa in the race to develop a functioning portal technology.[7][8] However a few days later, on May 16, the Black Mesa Incident occurs at the Black Mesa Research Facility, allowing aliens to teleport from Xen to Earth, eventually leading to the Combine invasion, stopping GLaDOS's race against Black Mesa.[8]"
So yes, you're probably right about HL2 and Portal 1 being around the same time.

I have a question (possible story flaw) Massive spoilers + Show Spoiler +How did wheatley use neuro toxin on you? You destroy the neurotoxin supply during the glados part...??
BTW it was a cool implosion, "in case of implosion, watch the implosion"

+ Show Spoiler +You disarming the turrets and disabling the neurotoxin was meant to be a surprise thing. Both of these are fixable (and were fixed, as you can see there were functional turrets later on in the story. Wheatley, obviously knowing about it, fixed it or used an alternate source.
