wizards and clerics are by far the most useful (and most sought after, particularly the cleric) in pve. They are not necessarily the "best," however, but they are incredibly useful in just about any situation (farming, boss fights, pvp). Wizards in particular let you run through mobs more efficiently than any other class (merchant/wizard/wizard is the ultimate speed farming group) while retaining a very high value in boss battles and pvp.
None of the classes however are really crap, but they have more niche roles and are not nearly as necessary.
Soldier: highest damage and physical defense. Great for just dealing out loads of damage (highest average dps for single target in the game). Very weak to magic spells, but has a ton of hp to make up for it. In pvp they are constantly the target of cc spells because of their terrible magic resistance, but they are capable of one-shotting a lot of the weaker classes, forcing other groups to constantly account for them.
Ranger: probably the hardest class to build properly, there are a number of different roles they can do, including healing, lightning aoe, and pure physical damage, or a hybrid of those. Probably best off going as a physical damage dealer specialization and use heals as a backup to a cleric or conjurer, who are better overall at healing. Otherwise their damage isn't usually good enough to justify taking them along in a group over other classes. Also useful because they have 2nd highest base agility and good int (for magic resistance) that soldiers/merchants don't have. The 2nd best solo class, behind warlocks.
Merchant: very similar to a soldier with slightly worse physical stats. He makes up for it with generally more useful abilities (profit, tax, gold rush, and economy are all crazy good) and higher agility. Is the 2nd highest single target damage dealer along with ninja.
Ninja: Very high damage output, very high agility, good intelligence (for magic resist), and measly hp. Sort of like a glass cannon, but that's oversimplifying things. In pve, they function much like a soldier or merchant with less health but more magic resistance and much higher speed (ninjas are by far the fastest characters in the game and you'll get used to moving first every round with them). Pvp is where they really shine though; they not only do crazy amounts of damage and resist cc more than other physical classes, but they have abilities like ninja net and smokebomb which can cause the rest of your party to attack first in every round, giving a huge advantage over the other party. Still a great addition in pve as well.
Warlock: the best solo class in the game, warlocks are the highest hp "spellcaster" as well as the slowest class in the game by a significant amount. Because their main attacks drain enemy health while healing themselves, they are by far the best solo class and can survive in the toughest areas in the game where other characters struggle. However, they are SLOW, both in agility for turn order and at dealing damage. It takes them forever to kill mobs and they are almost guaranteed to move last every round. They are definitely not major damage dealers. A lot of people really don't like bringing warlocks along in pve because they usually slow the group down because of their poor dps. However, they are fantastic for many of the boss fights, and they are really versatile in pvp because of all their cc spells and random abilities like absorb and reflect.
Conjurers: Conversely, conjurers are the worst solo class in the game. They are the second slowest class, behind the warlock, and by far the weakest defensively (quite a bit worse than wizards even). That being said, conjurers are fantastic in groups, and with solid protection, they deal insane amounts of damage with their focus on dots and they can heal with some very powerful hots as well. Because you can fire and forget dots and hots, they are capable of dealing lots of damage and healing lots of damage at the same time while casting other spells. Just make sure that you have consistent buddies to party with if you want to pick a conj.

thx seequeue for explaining the classes. I think I will make a ninja. Unfortunately I have no credit card, so I'll have to transfer money to paypal before I can get my subscription, which will take a few days. :/ Oh well, I can always mess around with the other classes until then. Is there any way to transfer money or items if you have several characters?

yes - it appears you can transfer items and gold between characters once you've reached the second town

Damn i keep dying as a wizard.. lol made it to lvl 6 somehow
looks like u just have to grind it out to get stronger which is a shame

You need a group actually. Makes it a lot easier.

This game is so simple, yet so fun. Leveling Cleric feels like leveling White Mage in FFXI... I'm useless right now, but people will want me some day, right? ...right??
Hey BrT!

Haha that was pretty fun levelling as a group
Yeah should definately do more often

edit:
I started up a TeamLiquid guild on Cornelia. Anyone who's invited to it has the ability to invite others by using the flag icon in the lower middle part of the screen. Should be helpful for everyone to organize and group with each other.
Please invite account Leojin (Cleric Cadderly) to the guild

I would honestly recommend always playing with a group if possible. Soloing is not only way more slow and boring, but you level much faster in a group and soloing many of the bosses is simply not possible unless you grind to insanely high levels early on (which would take forever).

Btw if any of you guys get the chance rape some guy called mattson because he was ganking the guild earlier

I've been playing for 4 days now. The game is awesome. It's hard to find groups until late at night since I'm from Finland. Also sick lag spikes every now and then. I can't believe I never heard from this until now. I need to subscribe just to support this awesomeness.

Hey 'ThatGuy' ... had fun beating bats with sticks!
General question to all... are Merchants desirable at end game at all due to Item Finding, or not so much?
|
Item finding seems pretty broken tbh (in a bad way). They are still part of the best farming team (or at least 2nd best), however. They are very good regardless of item finding anyways.

I found a item on the marketplace called Plus exp seed. It says it gives you +2 exp gain permanently. Can you buy it and transfer to another character?
I know in FFXI you couldn't trade certain items.

Gotta say that this game is totally awesome and more people should play lol
Doesn't require massive time commitment like normal MMo's either haha
Definitely need more people though since levelling wiz is impossible without party
|
I absolutely hate MMOs, but I have so much fun playing this game haha
|
Someone send me a message if they want to start off a new character with me, would love to play in a group.
