Been playing this game off and on casually the past few weeks, and it's been pretty fun. Essentially, it's a game with the mechanics of old school 8 bit RPGs, thrown into an MMO context. The game is surprisingly deep in regards to both its PvP and end game PvE content. For PvP, there are servers with open world PvP (in addition to tournaments), that make ganking and the like very entertaining. For PvE, there's actually some very entertaining and challenging bosses once you get to the end game.
If you were a fan of any old school RPGs, it might be worth your time to check this out.
EDIT - BE SURE YOU CREATE YOUR OWN BYOND KEY AND DO NOT LOG IN AS A GUEST. YOUR CHARACTERS WILL NOT SAVE IF YOU ARE A GUEST.
DOUBLE EDIT - Started a TL guild on Cornelia. Anyone who's a member should be able to invite you in.
The game is free to play. While there is a subscriber option (which is cheap), subscribers do not get benefits which would make their characters more powerful compared to non-subscribers.
If decide to check it out, the server that many competitive oriented people have been playing on is Cornelia, which is an open world PvP server. It's a mid population server, and could likely accomodate any TL people that were interested enough to check it out.
On April 04 2011 17:31 Souma wrote: Wow, thanks for posting this. I've never heard of it before. Seems fun. Gonna check it out!
One thing, be sure you create your own BYOND key and don't login as a guest. If you log in as a guest, you (obviously) won't be able to save your character which sort of defeats the point. Just throwing it out there since I just saw two people login as guests a moment ago.
ZP: Created an account and logged in. I'm trying to get into the sound settings but it's saying I have to be logged in to do so, but it tells me "Souma has logged in." when I boot it up. What should I do? Trying to mute the sound to listen to my own music.
I'll throw out random information as it comes out to me, but for those starting out one of the more useful pieces of information is probably how groups and enemy spawns work.
Aside from killing bosses, you usually either want to be solo or in a group of three. The game only spawns enemies based on group or non-group, and does not take into account whether or not you have 2 or 3 members. So if you go around with a 2 person party instead of a 3 person party, you'll be facing harder battles than you would be if you were solo.
Also, some random bits about the classes you can pick right away
Soldier - Strongest single target physical damage, strongest physical mitigation, able to guard others. Probably the strongest 1v1 class. Highest HP but takes absurd damage from magic.
Wizard - Arguably the most useful class (tied with Cleric) for PvE. Vital buffs/debuffs, and the strongest aoe damage in the game. Basically fits into any party with ease.
Cleric - Best healer in the game, also has invaluable buffs/debuffs. Not too much else to say, except that they're wanted in basically every party (and also great in pvp).
Ranger - Probably the best solo class of the above. Can be built to either be physical or magic based. Kind of a hybrid between all of the above three really. Decent physical, decent magic damage, and surprisingly good heals.

You have to be in-game in order to turn off music. Once you're in game and you're moving your character around, you can toggle the sound/music settings by hitting F4.
On the note of PvE vs PvP. The only PvP on PvE servers is through hosted tournaments and mutually accepted duels.
On PvP, you and your party can attack anyone for any reason so long as they're level 10 or above. If the people you're attacking are within 7 levels of you, you'll gain half the gold they're currently carrying when they die.
The only safe zones on a PvP server are banks and marketplaces.

Edit: And right as I posted that I figured it out. Yay. :D
There's an entire dungeon later on that's based almost entirely on that sort of movement/puzzle gameplay.
Even though I'm in a guild already, I think I'll leave temporarily and startup a teamliquid guild. Just so people coming from here can organize and talk to each other in guild chat, etc.
edit:
I started up a TeamLiquid guild on Cornelia. Anyone who's invited to it has the ability to invite others by using the flag icon in the lower middle part of the screen. Should be helpful for everyone to organize and group with each other.
I've also been playing this game casually for a few weeks. The progression is solid, and it's just a whole lot of fun. The community is great, and people are awesome about supporting the game with subscriptions.
On picking classes and blessings: Wizard is great for XP, gold, and even late-game bosses. Pick the Ice blessing if you intend to stick around for a while. Otherwise fire blessing. Soldier is exactly what you'd expect. Obviously pick the physical damage blessing. Cleric is essential for late-game fights, but it's a lot of work to get there. Heal blessing, no brainer. Ranger is decent all-around throughout the game. Often people get physical/electric damage, but healing is ok too.
Good info about the blessings. Forgot to mention that in the run down earlier. In the late, late game you can double your blessing, so it ends up being very important.
Haven't played myself yet but wanted to add some additional info from their homepage cause I found it interesting and felt it is missing here.
As said in the OP the subsciption is cheap, supports the developer and gives you some nice stuff. Here some examples:
-Four Additional Classes
"Vanish into thin air and sneak past NPC guards and other players with the Ninja. Cast dark spells powered by your own Hit Points as a Warlock, and become a wealthy loot hunter as a Merchant. Last but not least, the Conjurer is a pure caster who packs an arsenal of Damage & Heal Over Time spells."
-Fast Travel Routes
"Special subscriber doors scattered throughout the world lead to instant-teleportation travel routes and conveniently placed Inns... and to open those doors you'll need a "Subscriber Key"."
That sounds interesting and quite conveniant to me. Can someone who already subscribed and played the game a bit comment on these (or other features you get)??
I have a subscription to the game, and it definitely gives some nice to have stuff. The travel routes still cost the same amount of money as the non-subscriber alternatives, but are a bit quicker. The extra classes provide some flavor to the game - they're no stronger or weaker than the other four, but a bit more specialized.
Ironically, it's probably the customization part that you get the most use out of for subscribing. Various different character masks/dyes that you can use as a subscriber which are unavailable to non-subscribers. Useful for making your guy stand out cosmetically (even in an 8-bit game).
I think that might just be lag to the server. Most of the data that goes to you comes from the server, (including movement), and if your connection to the server is lagging a bit, then you might have some choppiness in your movement.
On April 04 2011 21:05 WArped wrote: Wow, this looks amazing, and a great idea. Trying it now, is it busy on the servers by the way, as in always players to team with and trade etc?
It can get decently busy during peak times. As it is, this TL thread alone has added a bunch of people to the Cornelia server, so I'd expect plenty of activity on the marketplace (auction house) and otherwise.
I also have the lag problem, from what I've heard the BYOND client basically lags anything it runs which is unfortunate because I've been praying for something like this to exist forever.
It's not unplayable but its unfortunate - if they could get something like this to run as smoothly as the original Dragon Warrior/Quest games I'd never stop playing it. Maybe someday it'll be standalone?
Just started playing it, I also have a slight lag problem as many people have said.. It's not TERRIBLE but it's just annoying. The game is EXACTLY like dragon warrior 1 except it's an mmo, very true to the old style and good fun!
I played a game that looked identical to this ~6 years ago, called Dragon Quest Online, also on Byond. It was put on indefinite hiatus. I may have to play this game and see if its the same. I had a good group of friends from a now defunct forum who played.

I'm amazed someone remembers that! I helped make it with Ruby and Flash... it was put on hiatus due to conflict of ownership and personalities. After Ruby released the code for DQO, byond got flooded with DWM, DWO, and DQO spin offs... including Silk's.
I'm amazed the community is still thriving. I used log in every now and then after I gave up working on DWM2 with Victol but there was never really anyone playing any of the FF / DQ / DW / Mafia games which were always sporting 50+ players.
on topic: I'd highly recommend checking this game out and subscribing. Silk's a great guy with passion for the game and respect for the community. If you had an obsession for the DW / DQ series, this will definitely be something you want to be apart of.
This is really cool! I've always been a fan of retro games! Looking forward to try it out with my friend this weekend, we'll probably create accs on Cornelia too.
This looks like an amazing idea. I'd like to check this out a little later on this evening and see the game for myself. It definitely has that final fantasy feeling with the sprites and text, so that is pretty cool in itself. I just hope that it will play better than final fantasy 14. I've heard and read that MMO is not very good.
EDIT: What is the guild name or like for TL users? Figured I would ask that now instead of setting everything up and not knowing what to do next when I get on, haha.

Guild name is TeamLiquid - has a green guild cape with a blue T.. Anyone who's in guild can invite you - just ask in world chat for an invite and (hopefully) someone should go to invite you. I've been on the past bit helping invite people to the guild and explaining things.
just as a heads up for anyone who logged on in the last hour and had lag, admins came on to restart the server. something weird was going on - lag should be fixed.
As a reminder, for guild invites be sure to say somethingin wsay chat (hotkey Y) - anyone who's a member should be able to invite you if they get close to you in game.
The link in the OP takes you to the servers page. Looks like 50ish on the main server, 30ish on some of the smaller, and <20 on the four or so left over.
On April 05 2011 11:38 endGame wrote: Ironically I'm going to ask, what is the end game like? And is there an end game?
The end game for PvE is this place called Black Sanctum. Max level dungeon, has several very difficult bosses, and has multiple daily quests to get sanctum shards which are used for some of the best gear.
The end game for PvP is world ganking, and PvP tournaments which happen from time to time (which are actually quite fun and can be decently competitive).
Edit:
As far as the servers go, Cornelia is the biggest PvP server right now. I have a guild setup for TL, and anyone who's already in has invite privileges to get other people in as well. Click the globe in the world list to see who's on, and pester them for invites if you're just starting out.
depends how much you play. You can hit 32 in under 24 hours of actual playtime, but that's pretty unrealistic unless you know what you're doing. If you consistently travel in groups, you can hit max level in under a week.
I messed around yesterday with a wizard and the game looks like fun, but I think I want to be a Ninja instead. However, they look a bit weak on paper. I'm not interested in being a cookie-cutter character, but I don't want to be a class that gets rolled all the time.
How useful is Vanish anyway? Is it a good protection against gankers?
wizards and clerics are by far the most useful (and most sought after, particularly the cleric) in pve. They are not necessarily the "best," however, but they are incredibly useful in just about any situation (farming, boss fights, pvp). Wizards in particular let you run through mobs more efficiently than any other class (merchant/wizard/wizard is the ultimate speed farming group) while retaining a very high value in boss battles and pvp.
None of the classes however are really crap, but they have more niche roles and are not nearly as necessary.
Soldier: highest damage and physical defense. Great for just dealing out loads of damage (highest average dps for single target in the game). Very weak to magic spells, but has a ton of hp to make up for it. In pvp they are constantly the target of cc spells because of their terrible magic resistance, but they are capable of one-shotting a lot of the weaker classes, forcing other groups to constantly account for them.
Ranger: probably the hardest class to build properly, there are a number of different roles they can do, including healing, lightning aoe, and pure physical damage, or a hybrid of those. Probably best off going as a physical damage dealer specialization and use heals as a backup to a cleric or conjurer, who are better overall at healing. Otherwise their damage isn't usually good enough to justify taking them along in a group over other classes. Also useful because they have 2nd highest base agility and good int (for magic resistance) that soldiers/merchants don't have. The 2nd best solo class, behind warlocks.
Merchant: very similar to a soldier with slightly worse physical stats. He makes up for it with generally more useful abilities (profit, tax, gold rush, and economy are all crazy good) and higher agility. Is the 2nd highest single target damage dealer along with ninja.
Ninja: Very high damage output, very high agility, good intelligence (for magic resist), and measly hp. Sort of like a glass cannon, but that's oversimplifying things. In pve, they function much like a soldier or merchant with less health but more magic resistance and much higher speed (ninjas are by far the fastest characters in the game and you'll get used to moving first every round with them). Pvp is where they really shine though; they not only do crazy amounts of damage and resist cc more than other physical classes, but they have abilities like ninja net and smokebomb which can cause the rest of your party to attack first in every round, giving a huge advantage over the other party. Still a great addition in pve as well.
Warlock: the best solo class in the game, warlocks are the highest hp "spellcaster" as well as the slowest class in the game by a significant amount. Because their main attacks drain enemy health while healing themselves, they are by far the best solo class and can survive in the toughest areas in the game where other characters struggle. However, they are SLOW, both in agility for turn order and at dealing damage. It takes them forever to kill mobs and they are almost guaranteed to move last every round. They are definitely not major damage dealers. A lot of people really don't like bringing warlocks along in pve because they usually slow the group down because of their poor dps. However, they are fantastic for many of the boss fights, and they are really versatile in pvp because of all their cc spells and random abilities like absorb and reflect.
Conjurers: Conversely, conjurers are the worst solo class in the game. They are the second slowest class, behind the warlock, and by far the weakest defensively (quite a bit worse than wizards even). That being said, conjurers are fantastic in groups, and with solid protection, they deal insane amounts of damage with their focus on dots and they can heal with some very powerful hots as well. Because you can fire and forget dots and hots, they are capable of dealing lots of damage and healing lots of damage at the same time while casting other spells. Just make sure that you have consistent buddies to party with if you want to pick a conj.
thx seequeue for explaining the classes. I think I will make a ninja. Unfortunately I have no credit card, so I'll have to transfer money to paypal before I can get my subscription, which will take a few days. :/ Oh well, I can always mess around with the other classes until then. Is there any way to transfer money or items if you have several characters?

yes - it appears you can transfer items and gold between characters once you've reached the second town
This game is so simple, yet so fun. Leveling Cleric feels like leveling White Mage in FFXI... I'm useless right now, but people will want me some day, right? ...right??

I would honestly recommend always playing with a group if possible. Soloing is not only way more slow and boring, but you level much faster in a group and soloing many of the bosses is simply not possible unless you grind to insanely high levels early on (which would take forever).

Hey BrT!
Thanks for the help through Bandit Caves Karshe, Cleric power!
I've been playing for 4 days now. The game is awesome. It's hard to find groups until late at night since I'm from Finland. Also sick lag spikes every now and then. I can't believe I never heard from this until now. I need to subscribe just to support this awesomeness.
Item finding seems pretty broken tbh (in a bad way). They are still part of the best farming team (or at least 2nd best), however. They are very good regardless of item finding anyways.
I found a item on the marketplace called Plus exp seed. It says it gives you +2 exp gain permanently. Can you buy it and transfer to another character?

But WoW isn't grindy, it has plenty of quests and easy leveling, and I'm not saying grindy/difficult is a bad thing but when you have no choice but to fight the same monsters over and over for 2 or 3 long levels as a squishy caster wizard, then it gets kind of worn out pretty quickly.

Now I suppose I'll just look for groups
Yes, the game is not tailored well for solo players. The amount of monsters gets decreased so it's manageable, but the xp cut is pretty substantial as well.
I'll try again next morning after DL's finish but might be unplayable whilst im visiting SEA
Hey - the lag is what makes it old school. Ever played the original Quake 1 or Doom online? Exactly, every action has a half a second delay before you see it happening. Good old school mid 90's netcode, none of this fancy shmancy toying that modern casual friendly game sgive.
Game is awsome, TL guild should be able to help u get party's after u do the first say 10 on ur own. Im Ism on the server if anyone see's me and needs help with anything otherwise ask cadderly cause he is gosu <3
sorry TL you were my starting point for getting into the game but now that MRS players are starting to hit level 32 we are going to take over the server and PVP. RIP i'm sorry i betrayed you ~

No there are some secret spots to get some things actually for blessing I believe moon blessing really does help. But it isn't insane, The secret spots would be for some easy gold but in general there is nothign to get messed up on. Just make sure you quest and try to party all the time.

Endgame perspective:
Strategy: At the moment, frost wizards seem to be dominant thanks to blizzard, so frost blessing and milestone is typical here. People almost always choose 10% health milestone, since you have enough MP for any fight anyway, and resist isn't important since your inevitably huge int will reduce spell damage anyway (also spell piercing negates resists to some extent...). As for Madness/shadows/curse, that's up to you, it's usually a toss-up between the first 2 abilities since curse is so limited and duration is so short.
Money: Bank often
Equipment: Whatever you can get. The first 'competent level' gear is something along the lines of woolen hat, Mage Slime Robes, Meteorite Armlet, and some cool looking weapon.
Stats: Spell Pierce > +ice/+int when dealing with mobs in Black Sanctum.
Caps for important stats are 50% for elemental damages, 40% for spell piercing.
Best part: if you somehow mess something up, it's okay because there are scrolls for resetting your moon blessing, your milestones, your seeds, and even your initial appearance!
this game deserves WAY more attention, its awesome, me and 2 friends started, 2 of us are level 11 now, and one is level 8~ ish, and we did this in only a few hours while having a blast. REALLY worth checking out, will be playing more for sure!
invite to TL guild! Playgu, Porpudingo, and Prople ^_^
Hi shinjin, you need to message ingame in wsay that you need an invite; we can only invite you when one of us is standing next to you . You're on Cornelia, correct?
I won this weekend's tournament with Kurz and Tenma ^_^.

So BYOND is finally getting more peeks from across the corner!
I've been having fun with this client for so long now, and I swear, I have not seen/heard it mentioned during that time... until now! Hope you all have fun with BYOND--it's an amazing client.
I've played NEStalgia once, but the delay from being in a room of 80 people is horrible! Of course, I wouldn't have it any other way. 80 players in one room is more fun to me than just 5. Perhaps I'll sign on once again. I've been spending my time playing Space Station 13, actually, haha.
if you guys just want a carefree MMO that you dont have to pay any money for, that you can play on your free time with friends, then you should definitely check this game out, i played with my roommate and its not even one week yet, and we are level 29, and the level cap is 32. (we only played maybe 2 hours a day)
The community is really nice and people will recognize you quickly. Trust me, this game just needs more advertisement and recognition, it will be big eventually, get on it now and you won't regret it.
I HIGHLY recommend starting this game with a friend. With a group of 2 you can blaze through quests, it is way more fun and you can alternate party leaders so the other guy can basically surf the net at the same time as playing.
As for the game itself it is constantly being updated, has a strong endgame, daily quests, tons of items, CHALLENGING puzzles, and a bevy of other options - ITS LIKE THE DRAGONQUEST/FF game you always loved but ONLINE.
tl fighting~ we are taking over the server gg -playguuu
Normally, I'm opposed to spending a lot of time with mmos, but this game is just too amazing. If you're just starting out, I highly recommend, like almost all the experienced players in this thread, getting a friend or two to play with you. By having 2 or three people in a party instead of soloing, you all get more gold and more experience. If you only have 2 people, with no subscription, I recommend 1 person be a ranger and the other a wizard. The reason for this being FAST FARM. Wizard (of course) gets a lot of aoe spells, but so does the ranger. Because of this, once the two of you are strong enough, you can kill an entire enemy wave after 1 shot from each of you. I'm sure there are other suggestions from other players for starting parties (especially if you have a subscription), but this has been working pretty well for me so far. Once you're in the tl guild, it's pretty easy to find people to party with since we're cool like that. This game can get pretty tedious by yourself, but with friends/tl guild it's loads of fun ^_^ Join the guild! (All the cool people are doing it. You want to be cool right?) -Porpudingo ^_^

just wanted to say that this game is awesome.. made a wizard and joined the TL guild...and they are very helpful. can't.....stop.......playing, haha. one of the main reasons i like it so much right now is that i can just sit back and relax and play....like most turn based games, i guess. with other games i'm usually 3 inches away from the monitor while feeling like i'm 2 seconds away from having a heart attack the whole time. i'm sure it gets more intense the higher level you are and when you start pvp'ing and whatnot... but right now its fun to just chill, explore the world, and try to get to that point.
I'm trying to make some low level duelers/gankers. I completed a soldier with optimal gear; he hits like a truck but feels underwhelming defensively. I'm going to make a Ninja and see how that one fares.
we updated, using ver 1.50 now no new content yet just graphic/menu/sprite adjustments I dont think the team liquid guild is active any longer so if you need help try contacting someone from Ghetts Stars; most of the active tl members are in this guild now.
