I've tried this game out for a short while and it seems kinda fun. Anyway, as a light defender I used disc launcher and chaingun. As a light defender here, all I have is a disc launcher and some kind of useless (?) shotgun? Chasing against competent players seem like it would be very hard, as the chaingun was the weapon mainly used for that. Is the assault rifle (for 100k xp) any good? You really need the thrust pack if you want to chase. Catching up to pub llamas is no problem, but against good cappers it's a whole different game, and much more difficult than in the past. It's also really map dependant depending on how well you can do it, because you need suitable terrain(downslopes) to get the most out of your weapon impulse. Either way, the basic gist is you thrust + nitron + dj off slopes (need egocentric perk), which will get you up to 200-220.
This is fast enough that you can take a shorter beeline and cut off the enemy FC doing side- or front-to-backs at some point in his route, but chasing as in "damage enemy at stand preventing a clean grab and then DJ after them to to keep them inside chaingun range long enough to whittle them down" is pretty much dead.
The shotgun is actually a decent weapon, the ROF and damage on it is pretty rapey up close (the catch is of course to position yourself well). For chasing though, the LAR is better, because your target will usually be outside shotgun range. It's a pretty annoying gun though, because it's not a full auto but instead fires a 3-round brust on every click - I'd really recommend to get a keyboard macro program to auto-spam clicks for you if intend to use it (or any of the pistols) a lot.
Also, in T2 you could throw mines and then shoot them with the disc so the guy you were fighting took damage from both explosions. Is there anything like that here? Soldier has a proximity grenade that you can use in conjunction with thumper/disc, but the timing/aiming is much trickier and nowhere near as reliable. You'd also be relegating yourself to LoF-only duty as you can't chase in soldier. In short, there's really isn't a reliable way to OHK kill the capper at the stand as he comes in, save for last-second in-your-face placement of a doombringer forcefield just as the capper is on his final approach.
Also, heavy offense seems pretty nerfed what with everyone beginning with full gear. But I don't know about Doombringer and that other class that isn't Juggernaut. Are the medium classes any good? As I remember, no one used to play them competitively in T2 (not when I was playing anyway). It was either Light or Heavy. In T:A, the armor balance in general is skewed towards medium. They don't really lose anything meaningful in firepower, and are maneuverable & fast enough that light's don't have a huge advantage over them (except in capping).
For the medium classes, the soldier is a good all-around class probably best suited to stand D/general deathmatching.
The Raider is also a really good class for clearing the stand and dueling thanks to the shield pack. If you liked playing heavy shield/CG turret style in T2, this is as close as you're going to get to that in T:A.
Heavies overall are really gimped because of the two-weapon limit, big hitbox + bad manouverability (bullet sponges), terrible energy regen and shitty disc jumps that fail to make up for the terrible regen. Also, the mortar has an annoying range-limiting parachute mechanic that results in a pretty unintuitive, non-parabolic flight arc when you're shooting long range targets.
Doombringer is a decent HoF /w its chaingun/FF/mines, but the best overall heavy is the Jugg, because once you equip him with the LMG and throwing disc nades, you essentially have a class with (almost real) 3 weapons.
Brute is a terrible and useless class with bad equipment and no role that either the jugg or dmb wouldn't perform better.
Also, sinpers are really strong in this game. If you want to make people rage, pick up the sentinel.

Since latest patch you can try all the classes and weapons in training mode and see how you feel about them there. They will remain locked however in any other play mode.
Assault rifle is a nobrainer, an absolute must vs good cappers. I also reccomend the Chain ( i think its called LAR, not sure) on Juggernaut as secondary. Brute is only heavy class not used in competitve play because it lacks a chaingun.
Medium classes are definitely used, especially Raider being the best dueler/ flag clearer in the game.
EDIT: I am not sure about the testing feature tho. Ive read about it in patch notes so I assumed its in the game but I havent tried it myself. If they havent put it in yet I apologize for missinforming you.

The testing feature is in the game now, its under target practice in the training menu
just select a class or weapon even if it appears locked and it will equip it.

Ah, some great answers. Thanks!
Guess I will try to get 100k xp soon then and try out the new sniper rifle in the meanwhile.
edit: lolol no energy loss when firing.

What is a good ping that is at least playable for this game?
Just started playing and been averaging 100+ ping on closest server

I played in beta but i couldn't get into it lol

I got a problem with Tribes from the technical side of things. My graphic card is a pretty good Nvidia one, but apparently it has some kind of weird issues with keeping up a constant Fps. It tries to get an insane amount of Fps and overheats in seconds, followed up by a drastic drop of Fps to about 5. I solved this for a lot of games by capping the maximum frame rate at 35/60 (e.g Starcraft 2, LoL, etc.) But I haven`t found an option for sth like this in Tribes. Does anybody know if it is possible to do so? Google Search wasn't really helpful.

Under three digits is fine in my opinion.

As long as you don't chaingun a lot, you'll probably be fine. Sniping is also lag compensated so you should be fine there too.

Check through the thread for further tips, or check the HiRez forums.

The thing I miss when I go AR+Thumper is that the Thumper's splash area is kinda small and the radius for the max splash damage is small. The radius for spinfusor's 650 damage is pretty big in comparison.
Fair trade-off though. Thumper gives a good boost and you can actually mow people down with the AR instead of relying on long distance shots with the spinfusor.

I think I was in that game too, got 24 flag returns.

What exactly is considered armored in the game when it says +20% dmg vs. armored?
|
Base assets that aren't gens and vehicles. I don't know why tech turrets have that bonus when a shrike will never fly into those and I'm pretty sure they don't even damage buildings.
