When I was a kid in high school, I played Morrowind almost exclusively for at least 1 year. I knew every little thing about that game including things that weren't even on the Internet ("exploits" more of to get you character maxed in the minimum amount of time). As much as I loved that game as a kid, I would never, ever recommend it to anyone in this current day and age. It just didn't age well. The combat is horrible compared to Skyrim or Oblivion; it's literally impossible to win fights against enemies that are stronger than you because they move faster and 1-2 shot you instantly, then there is the "fizzling" and "missing" from spells and weapons... it's just horrible. Just like in Oblivion and Skyrim, most dungeons have nothing. There are so many things I can say about the game from good to bad, and believe me, no one knows better about that game than me, just don't waste your time. Play Oblivion with OOO or Skyrim with, well, whatever mod is like OOO. Don't play Morrowind. Most people who recommend it to you are living in nostalgia land or don't know any better.
The combat is only rage inducing if you don't understand why you're getting owned. Morrowind doesn't babysit you by giving you monsters to fight your own level. If you go someplace crazy right from the start you're going to get owned and that is how it should be. The combat in morrowind takes a lot more understanding, but I wouldn't explicitly call it bad. The miss chance with low skill could be considered bad I suppose, but if you understand it then it isn't the end of the world.
You can easily enjoy morrowind in this day and age without being in nostalgia land, just don't buy it without knowing what you're getting into. You're going to die because the game is out to get you. Learn from your mistakes and enjoy a real RPG that doesn't babysit you every step of the way.

I think one of the funniest things about Morrowind is that it will just let you do whenever you want. It will let you utterly break the main questline and then give you a simple dialog box saying you cant finish anymore after you did it :p

I understand I'm talking to the most dedicated Morrowind player eva, however what you're talking about is what makes this game great, not bad. Personally, I hate how modern games babysit me. They tell me where to go, when to go there and they help me by scaling enemies properly. I hate stories that end in ~15 hours. I hate going to join a mage council as a freshly started adventurer and 8h later I'm suddenly promoted to the highest rank possible in that profession (hi skyrim).
You want to walk up into a scary cave, in the face of a dragon or into skelettons as a newborn adventurer? Fine, you can do it. You'll die. That's the way it should be for games in this genre imo, without some artificial "Oh, well, of course they will be weaker when you are weaker!"
Morrowind is one of the few games that (with all the graphic and content mods, just use the overhaul) has aged incredibly well for people who are sick of games feeling like hollywood popcorn movies which serve you a storyline on a silver platter. Playing Morrowind to "accomplish" something feels horrible, indeed. The story (or stories rather since there are so MANY things to do) is long and winded and almost impossible to finish within a few days.
Install it, add the morrowind overhaul (probably THE most in depth mod I have ever seen btw) read up on character generation (that part sucks for beginners) and play to just... play. Enjoy reading and enjoy the ride. Probably the biggest let-down for the first hour when I start it up nowadays is the slow pace compared to other games. After getting used to it you can go ahead and enjoy it with all the little details that offers.
/rant end. Morrowind. <3

Yeah, but for the way Morrowind handled it, there are other combat systems which would've fit that style of stat-based combat a LOT better. Or... take Skyrim for example. It has scaling monsters to a degree, but the way it handles "monster strength" and combat is multitudes better than how Morrowind handled it, simply because you don't miss 50 times in a row because a couple of your stats are too low.
And that's the problem. The metagame (basically everything you listed) in Morrowind was perfect, but the combat, which is something very integral even to that kind of game, sucked ass. And that's an immersion breaker. For the time it was OK, since Morrowind was basically the only modern game around that even did that kind of combat, but today it just doesn't work anymore. For a first person "action"-style gameplay it was simply, objectively, bad, and that why it hasn't aged very well at all.
When you play Morrowind with an Overhaul mod today, you will immediately notice that it's a pretty old game. That's what it means to not age well. Take a well-designed combat system like that of Ocarina of Time for example. If you gave that game a hi-res graphical update, no person in the world who didn't play the game already would notice that it's a game that came out 15 years ago. That game aged really well. Morrowind really didn't.

I'll add a bit more clarification; there is literally no way to beat enemies in Morrowind that are "above your level" because as said before, they will run up and one shot you and give you no chance of escape. The combat system is just horrifically bad. The story is the best in the series by far though, I'd never argue against that, but the combat really does just ruin everything in this modern day. In Oblivion and Skyrim, even if you had a level 1 character, you could beat enemies much tougher than you if played with zero mistakes, and that was fun as hell. Although the entire series shares the plague of 90% of the dungeons having jack shit, Morrowind was the worst and it was no fun having to stop progressing in one and be forced to come back later when you were stronger, whereas in the newer games you could try and try again at that tough fight until you find a strategy that works.
|
We'll just have to agree to disagree then. Oblivion destroyed progression which is one of the main reasons why I dislike it so much. You run into a cave in morrowind and you get owned so you come back later when you're stronger. The worst part about oblivion was that the game actually became harder as you leveled up. If you take the morrowind mindset in oblivion and come back when you're a bit stronger, the game merely spawns even more absurd enemies. I'm alright with areas being "too hard" because I'm not a high enough level is what I'm trying to say. It gives me something to look forward to.
|
If you can't beat enemies of a higher level in morrowind, you are not playing good enough. You can't beat EVERYTHING, sure. But you can beat stuff that significantly stronger then you. And that is a good thing. A random dude with barely any combat training walking into a vampire lords lair will probably not have a good day.

I liked mirrors edge. It has some flaws but it's definitely fun to jump around in. Just don't expect to play it more than 4 hours total.
They really need to make a second one improve on it's potential.
|
@Mirrors Edge No way. The game is pretty bad. I have like 10+ games on my list from all the summer-sales + StarCraft and Diablo. I'm glad I didn't bought Borderlands 2 and Torchlight II. I try to don't buy a new game until I played all that I bought recently.

So steam community just launched where it apparently plugs together a collage of screenshots from the most popular games to show that in a box on the front page.. apparently though, someone at valve forgot to remember that games have age restrictions, which are obviously not checked for the front page, resulting in bare tits screenshots for everyone :D + Show Spoiler [front page screenshot, but NSFW] +

But those pictures WERE the best part of the game. =(

So, with the release of "big picture":
anyone still doubting there will indeed be a gabe cube soon? what happened to those rumors back then? can't remember if anything was confirmed or denied. But with "big picture" now, this seems like it was the biggest step missing to make steam living room with controller compatible.

yeah right.. no-one uses tv anymore, what's gaming consoles anyways? and having a tv despite not watching any regular television so you can watch movies with friends or something like that is obviously completely pointless as well. why would you derail like that >.< there's obviously tons of people who still mostly watch tv and don't play games or just have a big tv anyways, maybe wit a ps3 or xbox or wii attached.

I watch TV and movies and play games all on my computer. TV is obsolete at this point tbh. only reason to own one imo is if a game you really want to play is only available on console but even then I would rather just hook the console up to my pc.
