Mass Effect wasn't that great at all. The story was ok I guess but it had pretty boring combat and the RPG elements in it are fairly basic. Not alot of room for customization at all. Also, all the sidequests basically use the exact same two maps or something so they are literally always the same.
I'm actually playing through Mass Effect 2 as I type this..I'm a good ways in now and I find it much better than the first. The story seems to be more interesting and there seems to be alot to see and do. The battle system is largly the same. It's a 3rd person shooter with bare-bones RPG elements. The environments are more diverse but so far I have just been going down corridors, with some occasional branches. Reminds me of FFXII which isn't a good thing. I do like all the dialogue manipulating though.
ME1 is ok I think if you just rush through it, ignoring all the cookie-cutter sidequests. ME2 seems significantly better in alot of areas, I find it to be pretty good.
Mass Effect is a fantastic series. Enjoyed 1-3 a lot and it's one of the greatest western rpgs of our time. The ending sucked in 3, but it sure was a fun ride up until then. Don't listen to the blind hate out there because of EA as it's really a great trilogy.
I thought Mass Effect was made by BioWare, who also made Dragon Age. That was a Steam deal, so I was hoping for a ME deal as well. If you're referring to EA as a publisher, didn't they also publish Dragon Age?
Developer |= Publisher. BioWare is owned by EA and EA is the Publisher and they decide about things like Steam Sales etc. Its the Publishers who make the Prices and not Valve.
Really? I'm surprised. I've heard almost nothing except enthusiatic praise for ME1 and ME2. I was thinking that getting either of these games for 5 bucks would be a steal.
If you finish Mass Effect 1, you want to play ME2 and will be disappointed. After that you maybe still want to play ME3 just to finish the story and thats the problem. ME3 is really a waste of time in every aspect.
I disagree, while there isn't as much freedom or as good of a story in mass effect 2, the interactions with your squadmates are quite a bit better, the gameplay is superior and side missions are better thought out.
As for mass effect 3, everything up to the ending was quite good, so don't exaggerate.

The extended endings gave more closure, but didn't change the core of the endings, which still sucked. I still enjoyed me 3 a lot though. They just didn't end it properly, but I'm not going to hate the series just cause of that.
I don't get the hate for Mass Effect either. I personally enjoyed ME1-2 quite a bit, just don't expect it to be some kind of pure shooter. IMO, the writing is far from terrible. Sure, some of the dialogue has to be generic enough to work with multiple responses, but what the hey? I've read worse in mass paperbacks. The games are all currently -50% off, I recall the Dragon Age flash sale was -75%.

Well, the plot holes were plugged and they added fallout-esque cutscenes to highlight your choices, other than that the ending remains a tad silly though it's not that bad all things considering
I think that has a lot to do with it. I know someone who was a die hard bioware fan and loved mass effect 1 and dragon age. Then dragon age 2 came out and he became a hardcore anti fan and hates on everything bioware now cause he says they cater to casuals now.
ME gets hate for ME3, and that pretty much comes down to the ending, which suckyness was exaggerated greatly from the start and was improved with the extended cut. Some people dislike ME2 as well, but personally I think ME2 is the best game in the series, I feel it improved pretty much everything which sucked in ME1 and built on the universe and characters very nicely. The only real problem with ME2 is the story, which is good but feels a bit irrelevant in the grand scope of things, but the minor storylines regarding the characters etc are really good.
ME3 is IMO underrated because of the ending, but overrated because of the game. I personally found the story pretty dumb at many points in ME3 and IMO the characters are a lot more boring than in ME2 and overall, the game isn't as memorable. Combat is also worse because cooldowns are too low, so it feels even more spammy and casual than ME2 did compared to ME1. I'd recommend ME3 to anyone who liked the rest of the series, but IMO it's clearly the worst game. The whole system with was assets and sidemissions brought down the game HARD. Doing loyalty missions in ME2 was fun and gave so much more depth to the characters, flying around the universe, finding items and running around the WHOLE citadel to find who to give it to and then just get a generic score? No, that's not fun.

Indeed, it's actually quite good as far as modern jrpgs go. I never did beat it though, I think I will grab it if it wins. Also, the bosses can be really REALLY hard if I remember correctly.....for anyone that's into that sort of thing...
