Additional Versions can be found here: http://te4.org/

Previously it was called ToME: Tales of Middle Earth, a Zangband clone with a few additions.

He's recently started a new version, 4.x that was originally with the LoTR plot, but has since moved away from it. It's still a solid platform though.

There's always NetHack and various other dungeon crawls.

I enjoy angband and variants every now and again, but the prominence of stairscumming (many good players simply go up and down stairs to regenerate the level and wait for something interesting) really turns me off. The steampunk variant (I forget the name) is a lot of fun as well but even harder than Angband imo.

Nethack is fun for the unitiated into roguelikes and a gamer should definitely ascend (win) a character before they die. It's just something you should do. Also, dying because you threw a cockatrice corpse up in the air and you weren't wearing a helmet is just some shit you won't find elsewhere.

My current favorite roguelike is Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, which is a more action-oriented game with many choices for races and classes.

http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/ is the link if you're interested. The great thing about Nethack and Dungeon Crawl is that they can be played on a server where they track your stats as well as others so that you can see what everyone else is doing and even watch their games in progress. Angband unfortunately doesn't have that.

As the above mentioned, ToME is great as well. I think it's really gotten beyond the realm of an Angband variant (even if that's what it technically is).

Edite Note: Also, for extremely action-oriented roguelikes, try the Doom Roguelike. It's a lot of fun.

Oh whoops, I thought you were talking about towers.angband.com aka t2tmud.org... a pretty good game that I somehow still have an account on lol.

Will have to check this one out - always been hesitant, though have ascended a few times in nethack and am close to victory in DCSS so it'll be good to have another win under my belt.

Have to ask though is it close to nethack in the fact that pure knowledge of the game can win it for you? And please tell me their is no E word.

wow...

I totally thought that darkgod just stopped developing ToME. I checked the old ToME site and its a wasteland with tumbleweeds blowing about, and assumed that ToME development stopped.

Have any of you played ToME 4? did it feel "finished" or is there still a LOT of work to be done?

edit: well I played tome 4 and it still needs work... the latest version has selling removed. I can't handle that

To Do: 1. finish the rest of my practice league matches 2. win GSL

wish i knew how to play this, seems like it would be fun if you know what you were doing.
Have you considered the MMO-Champion forum? You are just as irrational and delusional with the right portion of nostalgic populism. By the way: The old Brood War was absolutely unplayable

Yea, it is pretty in depth. If you do end up deciding to give it a shot, i would just skim through most of the wiki. Just focus on the races, classes, stats, and controls. Quickly read through how fighting works, and just know that there are bad/horribad items, neutral items, good/magical items, exceptional/ego items, and artifacts/uniques.

Heres a good "Newbie Guide" for some tips, tricks, and general advice after you get the basics down:
http://www.thangorodrim.net/TANG/index.html

Just remember to use the I (capital 'i') command to inspect your gear so you get an idea of what stuff does.

It's removed intentionally, I agree, the 4.x is a vast departure from the Angband/Zangband/ToME 2.3.5 that we've probably come to expect, but it's good in it's own right.

Selling isn't 'disabled' you simply can't sell the 'junk' you might normally have to pack-mule for cash. Only Gems and artifact or Rand-art is viable to be sold. Normal white, green, blue stuff can't be sold off. With the latest additions of a a permanent identify effect (and a trigger ability to ID artifact level stuff) you can simply leave most of it where it lies.

It's 'different' than what many roguers may expect, but I think it's still quite good. Unfortunately, some of the more 'advanced' classes require actual achievement like effects to be done within the game. This means that for newer players, the options available are a bit limited to others.

There are ways around this though, if you care to search for them. Beyond that... Tome 4.x is HARD. Though new versions are coming out almost monthly, some with some significant changes (the no selling stuff was a recent one), there are relatively few 'winners'.

That and the various classes have some true defining differences, though granted you don't get access to many of them straight off.

its good to hear that tome 4 is hard. I was afraid that it would be made much easier, as it seems that everything was simplified. the inclusion of a default tileset, no need to identify every single thing you come across, and snazzy interface gave me the irrational notion that the game would be much easier.

I dont understand the orb of scrying at all-perhaps its the identify function you talked about. Also, do you get a house to store your stuff?

I'm also glad that its being updated. I looked at the variants listed in thangorodrim and it seems like many of them are dead.

If any new player can't deal with the ASCII-interface of Angband and it's variants, you could check out ZangbandTK. It's got actual graphics and it's super easy to install. You can even use the mouse! Sadly the creator hasn't updated it since like 2004 or something, but it's still pretty complete.

I'll just +1 for DoomRL as being a fun roguelike, and a lot easier to get into than the *bands.

They're brilliant games if you've got the time to spare, but I think a lot of people don't have the time and/or patience to really appreciate RLs like Angband and Nethack, or at least that seemed to be the case when I mentioned them to gamer friends.

I downloaded it once, will do so again, I looked around, seemed interesting but I was much more into Nethack though. I will tr it again though since I barely played it.

I never played any of the 'roguelikes'. But, being old, I did play hundreds and hundreds of games of the original Rogue. Actually bought it the first day it showed up on the shelf at my local Egghead Software. Damn Amulet of Yendor always out of my reach...

Any suggestions on a best roguelike to jump into?

I've played the GUI version of this game. It's pretty cool! I'm partial to nethack myself, but many feel that Angband is superior.

Argh, just lost my lvl 28 paladin on Vanilla Angband. I swear Murphy's Law applies to these roguelike games more than anything else in life.

The game is the exact same as Zangband, they just put a new UI and tileset on it.

www.zangband.org has pretty much all the info you need about the game itself.
