Surrounded by 5 guardian mummies at 14hp and no means of teleport at one point for example. Caught a lot of nasty mutations in Crypt:5 and had to change to Zin for his remove mutation perk. After that it was pretty much clear sailing. It was only my 2nd go with TSO after getting hammered repeatedly when trying to make Oka work. So yeah, if youre having trouble getting a pure melee basher anywhere give TSO a go.
Okuwaru isnt a viable late game deity, if you ask me, he isnt even that good early game. I think the tomb might possibly be the most difficult place in the game for non undead fighters, due to the fact that there is simply that much nuking and summoning. The only place thats more difficult for fighters is the ziggurat, the lower levels of the ziggurat are unpredictable and scary because all kinds of monsters spawn and in large amounts. Stone Soup is an amazing game, wish there were more games like it.

Okawaru is fine late-game until you get all the skills you care about above 22. Until then both heroism and finesse are very strong for most weapons, and you're very likely to get at least one good gift from him. I would usually not bother switching away from Okawaru for a 3 rune game, at any rate.
Anyway if you're playing trunk you should check out the new Xom imo, he seems a lot more fun than old Xom. He goes a bit overboard in high-tension situations--a Xom act every 3 or so turns is not uncommon with lots of enemies around--but he doesn't seem to do really annoying things very often any more, especially at low tension (so you're unlikely to get that bush polymorphed into an oklob as you rest up, for instance). I think he's actually not that bad of a god right now, as long as you play tight enough to not die to his mischief early on.
Also mass-inner-flame is hilariously fun if you have fire resistance and decent AC, and either don't care about your scrolls burning or have conservation.
Anyway I won a TrNe of Xom and it was excellent. Log below:

So I learned about this game from this thread, and just got to Zot for the first time (first time making it past the lair branches, actually). However, when I went through the portal the other end was surrounded by 4 tentacled monstrosities, 5+ dragons, and 2 moths of wraths and maybe some other stuff I didn't notice... I went right back through the portal immediately, but couldn't really think of anything to do. So I buffed myself, went through, and of course got constricted and beserked and died.
Does this happen a lot on the Zot portal? I looked at attyrec from the crawl site and it seems that he just got plopped down in an empty corridor. I honestly don't see what I could have done bar making my character much much stronger or maybe blinking around farther into Zot and hoping to find a good chokepoint.

Probably the right call is to read teleport and then go through the portal. You'll end up somewhere else on the floor (hopefully) and can clear it out at your leisure

They changed Xom? He won't enchant my +12/+44 executioners axe of asskicking to slap my shit anymore?

So I haven't been playing this game very long, but I had my best run last night as a DDFi of Makhleb! I got 3 runes, but I basically ran out of healing at Zot. Looking back, if I had played better I wouldn't have been so wasteful with my healing + letting Yaktaur Captains destroy my potions, and I probably could have saved Mines/Halls until later to use for lategame healing.
Anyway, yeah, I feel like I know what I could do to win, but any tips for how to survive with this race in a longer (5-15 rune) run? I really want to stick with it.

My guesses (read: bullshit help) would be... get conservation, and use your recharge ability if you know you're going to need your healing wand?
|
it'd be easier to survive as a DDEE^Mak, because they start with more int and more spells > less spells. Get some dwarven plate and kill dudes with haste and axes and iron shot. You'll save yourself a lot of health with ranged damage options.
and yeah, some way to protect your healing potions is a must
vampiric draining is a good source of healing too

Have been enjoying a HoFi of TSO. Had a relatively strange game, not finding lair or mines until d:11. Soon as I got in Lair, I played about 150 turns and then this popped up
![[image loading]](http://i45.tinypic.com/2gyd3qp.png)
Forced me to close the application.
Im playing consol tiles, if that makes any difference. Anyone have any idea what went wrong?
Btw, my char was reset back to when I first entered Lair

edit: lol this character just died. Ran into a zot trap on Lair:5 that summoned a blue devil or something and it immediately froze me for double dmg because I was wearing a fire ring. Awesome

Hi guys, looking for a bit advice. I don't have much experience past the standard (3-5 rune) game. I'm playing a DrMo going Dragon right now and want to go for more. I haven't found rMut yet, but other than that, it's going well!
Here's the file: http://pastebin.com/UtuMvaAD
First of all: Stats or AC (see rings)? Dragon has pretty low AC...
Secondly: I need a new god. TSO, Makh, Kiku seem viable, maybe Jiyva. I'm pretty covered in rN, otherwise I'd say TSO. Also I might want to be able to go Necromutation in the future.
Then.. in which order should I do Hell branches? I've been here 2-3 times but didn't get far.
General tips are welcome too.
|
Hell Branches I usually do Tart->Dis->Gehe->Cocy, but definitely tart and dis before the other two. Don't let Antaeus into melee range.
Do all the mundane branches except Tomb, then clear zot for xp, then Pandemonium, then the Hells, then finally Tomb.

One of the better crawl players is doing a play-by-play write up of his current game:
http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=Elynae's_Mummy_Warper *
Understanding what he does, and more importantly why, should help those struggling with DCSS.
*remember that in general the wiki (and in some cases learndb) is bad news. if you want good answers to your questions, use ##crawl

finally spent some time on this to learn the basic idea on how to proceed. Best i got so far is dungeon lvl 10 lol. I tried it with many different class combinations and currently im running a elf fire mage. This class kills so fast and easily, but the last 3 promising runs ended because of my player ghosts.
I know its part of the game but this is bullshit. I could put up with this when it was other classes. Every other combination, i was able to kill or run. This fucking fire mage ghost is ridiculous though. You get in range once and your fucked. They burn your scrolls and sticky flame you. Its like impossible without fire res. Ok, it is probably my fault for trying to dodge him and loot the whole floor lol. But still :/
Also ghost doesnt even have much incentive to kill since there is no items. Exp is nice i guess but the ghosts usually are stronger than any unique mob you see in those levels.
|
I'm pretty sure they finally nerfed ghost sticky flame range in trunk, try downloading the very latest version. (of course trunk has constricting mimics now so you might not like the trade-off)

If it gets too annoying, you can delete the bones files. Or play online!

I play on tiles, and there's a button on the interface that attacks the closest monster (It's ctrl+I by default). Is there any way to remap this key? It doesn't seem to be in the keybindings doc.
|
Uh, in console autofight is on the TAB button, I don't think it's different in tiles.
|
I see. Since I have custom hotkeys, it seems that pressing Tab uses the default direction key instead of the key I've rebound the direction to. Like when there's a monster down from me, I press tab, the game tries to do "j" which for me is Fire. So I guess there's no way to use it with custom hotkeys?
