My 0.9 SpEn guide: SKILLS: Approximate goals are as follows: 1) 8 Stabbing. 2) Invisibility at Excellent and 10 Dodging/Stealth. 3) 12 Stabbing, 15 Dodging/Stealth, 6 Fighting, and enough Short Blades for min delay. 4) 27 Stealth, 10 Fighting, and whatever spell skills you want. STATS: Raise Str to 8, then raise Int. SPELLS: From the starting book: EH, Confuse, Invisibility (and Sure Blade to train Charms or if you want better melee). When you find them: other generally good spells like Haste, Repel Missiles, Regeneration, Dispel Undead, Apportation, Blink, Control Teleport, Phase Shift, Controlled Blink, etc. GODS: Kiku is best, but Ash, Lugonu, Nemelex, and Makhleb are all great choices. WEAPONS: Any short blade will work for stabbing, but switch to a dagger when possible. For regular melee, early on look for elec and venom weapons. Later look for a quick blade and/or pain brand a weapon with Kiku. Distortion is nice also. Oh, and get a buckler. Lajatang is a pretty good weapon and you only need 14 skill for min delay, and electrocution is a decent brand. But -3 apt and you can pain brand a shortblade with Kiku so I'm not sure if it's worthwhile (you could go either way ... lajatang will kill dudes faster but takes more xp to do it so you will have fewer spells). If you do want to use the lajatang you should probably pain brand it unless you either find another lajatang or really want that electrocution damage vs undead (probably not worth it since you can use Dispel Undead instead). You also don't get a buckler with the lajatang but that's not a huge deal. (edit: wait, you're on 0.9 ... probably not worth it to use the lajatang. It's 16 base damage in 0.10 instead of 14) Note that you don't need shortblades skill to stab with a dagger, so if you do decide to switch to the lajatang you don't need to keep training shortblades.

I've used Elliptics guide to play all of my SpEn games haha. I think I'm just more concerned about in general, do you focus only one school of magic, and then branch, or is it ok to spread thin. For example, I want enough in Hexes for Invisibility to be Excellent, enough in Necromancy so that everything is in Excellent, enough in Charms/Air so that Deflect Missles is in Excellent, etc. To get to that goal though, is is better to focus on getting one at excellent before pursuing others?

After that, things get more fuzzy. Do you lack resists and/or are scared of enemy wizards? Get deflect. Are you feeling cool and want to be immortal? Get necromancy for death's door/lichform/zombies/whatever. You can't make a set strategy for every game because of the randomness. You must think on your feet and make a skilling decision on your own based on how your game has been going. Use the knowledge bots to look up spells and figure things out for yourself. IMO, though, focusing on one skill at a time is better than splitting up your xp too much. It leads to tedious micromanaging, and you can do fine without, but it's probably the "best." I just saw your file and noticed you have Spatial Translocations as well as Kiku. Need I remind you how unkillable a spriggan with Invisibility, controlled Blink and Death's Door is? ![]() edit: also random question. in 0.10 the necromancer doesn't have Dispel Undead in his book anymore. Is it gone or just gone from that book?

Over 5 hours on in. Really could have won, but messed it up there at the end. Time to start over ![]() Mennas is an interesting unique. His armor and aura are the things you need to keep in mind as you fight him, some classes will have an easier time polymorphing him into a 24-headed hydra. As a rule of thumb as with all polymorphs you need to decided whether you want what you poly to be squishier and hit harder or to be tankier and not hit as hard. Mennas, along with Mara and Xtahua is one of the three special uniques lategame that are either nearly impossible to kill, to escape from or both. However I wouldn't recommend that, since their built-in escape mechanisms don't sync well with the classic go-to lategame styles (death's door/necromutation, shatter spam, transmutations). Furthermore, rng hunger will become a big problem as you train spellcasting schools you have poor aptitudes for. Midgame gods can kinda make up for that but your lategame is still subpar, if anything I'm thinking Jyiva. Actually I only read the first sentence of what you said, reading it again I realized I was taking about super-lategame and you were talking about midgame. You can kind of do whatever, just don't starve and be mindful that your summons attack way more slowly than you. If you can micro and let them tank stuff in the open without being touched yourself then go for it, but it's a really hard and sometimes unreliable strategy. Just be swift and be stabby, spriggans are a gimmick race.

Mara and Xtahua are no more difficult to run away from than other speed 10 uniques (Mara is actually easier than most because half of his spells don't directly hurt you, unless your clone is somehow really difficult to run away from and he clones you right away), I don't know why you mention them specifically. Xtahua is also not especially difficult to kill (15 AC/7 EV and 133 hp mean he is squishier than Boris for instance (unless you have Dispel Undead), and he is also less deadly unless you have rF-.

It's probably still an improvement if you can manage to get around his 200 MR, I suppose, but even with a scroll of vulnerability and 27 evo it took a fair number of poly zaps in wizmode so you're unlikely to even have this matter. I didn't know about the first part, I'm guessing it's new to 0.9? Mara is no problem to run away from but is counted for his trickiness because of how he interacts with player scaling. Xtahua is usually more annoying than boris since deflect+blink+range make the latter a no-threat for mages.

I disagree about Xtahua being more annoying than Boris. I also really don't see why deflect + blink + range is better against someone with no cooldowns on his ranged attacks (including one ranged attack that doesn't even check EV or dmsl) (Boris) than against someone with a cooldown on his sole ranged attack (Xtahua), especially since Boris has better defenses and resists than Xtahua does. (Margery is of course more dangerous than either of them though, since she comes with a pack of hell knights who like to haste themselves and fireball is a nice unavoidable 3d33.)

Ya, so i spent a lot of time popping into rooms full of monsters, teleporting monsters i was trying to kill everywhere, etc. By the time I was floor 7, and had 50 health, i figured i'd try and take off the dagger. (since the wiki said some effects include damage, so I assumed i needed more hp to ensure i live) Nope, banished to the abyss at level 9. I managed to run for a surprisingly long time, teleporting randomly when their numbers started getting really highy. I thought the abyss was infinite but i ended up running into a dead end since I kept going in one direction. ![]()
