Blue glow is from Corona and the like (you are easier to hit), darkred is from Sticky Flame, yellow and brightred are from magic contamination (and will potentially mutate you). --- Distortion is actually a really good weapon brand, especially in places that aren't Vaults (distortion against yaktaurs in open spaces is not good, since you'll end up blinking them a lot), so if you find yourself equipped with a distortion weapon early on you can just choose to stick with it until you can survive a possible trip to the abyss. Admittedly it is less good for someone who worships Trog since blinking enemies do not play nice with berserk, but on the other hand once you build up enough Trog piety BIA does a pretty good job of helping you survive the abyss.

Been trying out high elf conjurers. Gotten pretty far with them, well relative to my other characters.

Other good non-uniques to enslave: orc sorcerers or high priests; deep elf sorcerers and demonologists (probably not high priests); sphinxes; draconian callers. Beefy fighter dudes aren't bad either, but probably aren't really worth the piety unless it's a unique. Also apparently you can get bone dragons on d:14 without faith if you are lucky (I also got a lot of extra piety in orc because I cleared a bailey with a ton of orcs). Note that a hasted bone dragon will more often than not kill an orb of fire 1-on-1; these are formidable allies.

As for tiles lag, I don't know. If you play webtiles, maybe it has to do with network lag. If you're playing tiles locally, I have no idea. Maybe try to grow your neckbeard levels a little and try the console version. Protip, go into the preferences of the executable and make the font larger and/or change fonts, so it's easier to read.

Win #5, ft. 5 runes - my new best. http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/eeviac/morgue-eeviac-20120126-004426.txt TeAE may be my favorite build yet. Sure Tengu have low HP, but survive the early game and their permanent flight+speed boost is incredibly strong. Great combat, defensive, and casting aptitudes. I would've killed for a decent demon trident, but that unbranded one was literally the only one I found, even after clearing out shoals:5. And then it took an Abyss run to find Freezing Aura. And then I never found vorpalise weapon. I was using a trident of protection all the way up to the slime rune, the vault there got me the Warp Weapon spell. Good enough. I ventured into Hell and kill Geryon, but didn't go any further. I didn't feel safe since I had 0 rN+, never found Regeneration or Blink spells, and my weapon was unreliable. I'm pretty sure I was strong enough that I could've converted to Lugonu -> scummed Abyss for piety -> permanently branded Distortion -> gone for 15 runes, but that would've taken forever. Another option would've been to kill Mennas for his Eudemon blade and scum Abyss for Long Blades XP, but again... take forever. MVP spells: Tornado, Summon Elemental, Warp Weapon.

I should retry this game, I suppose. I played it some time ago. It looked amazing on the outside, but it was just... shallower than expected once I got into it. When I found it, I thought I had found another Roguelike I could play alongside NetHack and ADOM, but it just didn't quite compare. I should give it a second shot, hopefully without preconceived notions.

DCSS has a great UI and a lot of cool ideas, but it's missing that ol' nethack imbalanced insanity charm. Just one example: ghosts vs. bones files. One is a pain to deal with and may very well kill you while giving nothing back but experience, the other is christmas coming early. Despite my love of roguelikes, Crawl has a very different design approach than NetHack or ADOM, and as such it took me a long time to get into it. But now that I'm here, all my old favorites have been rendered unplayable. The game cuts out a lot of typical RL crap and adds a bunch of awesome. When you do retry Crawl make sure to download the latest trunk, or the official version .10 which is due out in a week or two.

Right now I have 9 runes (shoals, swamp, vaults, abyss, and all 5 Pan runes) and I'm on d:27 at turn 38k, which is way faster than I've ever even been there with 3 runes before. I could probably do Zot except I have only one ring of rF and no potions of resistance right now, so I need to find more rF or I will die to orbs of fire in Zot:5. I went Lugonu for corruption/lifesaving/distortion/easy Pan exit (if you use Lugonu's aa you exit back to D, not sure if normal Abyss exits take you to D or Pan because I heard it may have changed..?), worked out pretty nicely so far. I corrupted the wrong place on Cerebov's level (partly since I didn't know the vault) but it still caused enough commotion to let me slip past everything. Got lucky with Gloorx because I appeared on the level in vision of the rune, so I took it and left. Mnoleg's rune is easy as always, and I got the hard-to-ninja Lom vault but guessed correctly so that didn't matter.

Another thing, ADOM rewards scummy behaviour. It has an infinite dungeon where you can basically generate as many levels as you'd like of a given danger level and farm them for items. It also has a Big Room that you can pacify and spend a few thousand turns farming Morgia Roots to train your toughness to incredible levels. The problem is here that a boring action becomes most optimal thing to do. I mean if you have the means to pacify the Big Room, then it's hard to come up with a reason not to do so. So to play optimally you must spend a long-ass time scumming morgia roots, and that's not fun. Crawl tries to get rid of scumming, to get rid of no-brainers to make your choices more meaningful. I'd love to compare to things in NetHack as well, but I never played it much so to be fair I can't. Also, there's no reason to wait for the stable 0.10 release unless you want to. They build a new trunk version several times a week containing the latest stuff, and if you play on the servers it'll even let you transfer your savegames to the next version.

http://seleniac.org/crawl/tourney/12a/overview.html </brag> --- As far as armour on KoBe goes (in 0.10, at least) I'd say look for mottled > steam > swamp dragon armour (FDA is ok too if you need the resists). Robes have the problem of having really crappy AC. Assuming you get enough ?ea then with 0 armour skill you get 6 AC more from steam dragon armour than from a robe; 8 more from MDA; or 10 more with swamp dragon armour, and the EV penalties are not very large even on small races. Train up armour skill a bit (note you can't actually train armour skill in steam dragon armour though--you'd have to wear leather or something to train it) and you will definitely feel less fragile. Robes can work, especially if you have one of resistance (and need the resistances) or a nice randart, but you will take more damage.

I'm playing a (pale) draconian abyssal knight, and my gameplan was to get unarmed up, then get transmutations up, and turn into a dragon and rip through things. So I'm on D:5 with 7.9 unarmed, 4.1 fighting, 3.3 dodging, and 2.4 shields, then I find this: The +7,+7 great sword of Change {speed, Hunger+ +Blink Int+1 SInv}. My question is, do I use this for a while without training swords then switch to unarmed after I've gotten the skill fairly high, or do I just go all out and abandon my current plans in favor of training longswords?
