I don't agree with the people who disliked the start of witcher. I see why all of the backtracking was annoying, but the investigations were intriguing and worth the effort if you ask me.

The Witcher is one of my favorite RPGs of all time; I would put it up there with Planescape and BG 2. To say that I am eagerly awaiting the release of its sequel would be an understatement. What with Dragon Age 2's poor showing, I have high hopes that the Witcher 2 will display what a proper modern computer RPG can be.

I've recently (read: two days ago) started playing The Witcher again, so, naturally I'm pretty excited for this game.

I bought the game when it came out a few years back, but I actually never played it far beyond the part where you enter Vizima first, for various reasons (Alchemy system seemed confusing, monster and human enemy balance seemed to be really bad [And I still believe that Echinops are OP, lol], didn't dig the setting), but I've been playing maybe a good of 10 or 15 hours already in these two days, and seeing as I don't even receive silver talent points yet it seems like this game has a ton of content.

I don't know what kept me playing this time, but after you "get" the alchemy system and it's uses, and after you learn to use your combat mechanics better (dodging, signs etc.) this game is really awesome. The story/setting of the world is a really gritty (very few black/white moral choices and views presented to you) and the way your decisions seem to impact the story seems to be rather huge, even though I can't judge it completely because I still just entered the Trade District of Vizima.

Judging from the preview videos, the combat system seems to have been improved a lot, as it looks a lot more fluid now. Also looks like they've cleaned up the UI quite a bit, and finally there's also a bit of visual character customization.

I'm not sure what they've done about the skill system yet, the one in the first game was largely flawless, safe for the fact that nobody tells you what some of the effects like "Pain +10%" etc. actually mean.

One two edged blade though: The game looks really beautiful, but that makes me afraid that I won't be able to run it fluidly. I've got a pretty powerful graphics card (radeon hd 4890, it doesn't support DX11 but in terms of pure processing power it's still better than most medium-prized cards that come out these days), but my CPU is pretty bad (Core 2 E5600) and I've only got 2GB of DDR2 ram. The witcher 1 runs absolutely flawless, but then again it's also a few years old now.

edit: lol what, I already posted a rather long post about the same thing on page two. Didn't remember that at all, anyways, I'll leave this post, I guess it can't hurt.

When it was released the game had one major problem in the city part: The way the loading worked made it pretty hard to really get into the game especially on mediocre PCs. It reloaded the entire district whenever you left a house but the patch made it much more fluently. Other than that I thought it was awesome to have these oldschool rpg parts where you actually have a lot of choices and you are encouraged to think for yourself. If they polish the small flaws that W1 had this might become the best rpg there was or at least top 5.

Since Dragon Age 2 bombed horribly, i really cannot wait for this game. Loved the first one even though it had its flaws but that is forgivable for a first time developer like CD Project RED was. But what made the game as good as it was tbh was that the story was solid, i've read the only book translated into english so far(Blood of Elves) and the game really does the books(who are great) justice. It's also one of the main things that made say DA:O good to me, the story was phenomenal.

I just hope TW2 sticks to this, all i want really is the first game with a new story and some minor tweaking and improvements, that would be awesome, don't fix it if it aint broken(something Bioware could take into consideration these days..)

I can only agree - the first one was bugged, annoying in certain aspects, the story was poorly told and had some major flaws. The game had serious issues and yet I loved it, we all did. Why? Because it's the closest thing to a real RPG we've gotten for almost a decade.

Well, the first installment of The Witcher being referred to as 'Planescape: Torment of this decade' is no small thing.
I only wish there was FPP camera available.

is this serious? who says that?

im really confused why witcher is so liked. i never deinstalled a rpg that fast. the start, the controls and esp the combat (and the cheesy imho stupid looking animations) totally turned me off .

does it really get so good? does the combat get better then "pick right style, click,wait1sec,click,wait1sec,click" ?

really wanna know. maybe i was just spoiled because at that time i had a bunch of awesome other games on my hd.

also will the combat be different in witcher 2? any infos on that?

Loved the first one but never finished it because it ALWAYS FRIGGIN' CRASHED ON ME and had a ton of bugs on top of that.

@ above posters:

I've played the game through and through three times i think, and yes the first Chapter really is freaking dreadfull compared to the rest of the game. Mostly because the story hasn't really picked up yet and doesnt until you get to act 2.

The combat system is similar in TW2, albeit it is said to be improved to include and bit more depth, such as counter attacks and the ability to dodge out of harms way and such.

I think they show off and explain the system at the end of this video:

Oh and the ingame voices in the video aren't of the real actors, its the developers voices so dont worry about that

^^ Man Aard looks way more badass in TW2.

System specs revealed!

Recommended specs
Processor: Intel Quad Core or AMD equivalent
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 260, 1 GB memory / Radeon HD 4850 with 1 GB memory
Memory: 3 GB for Windows XP / 4 GB for Windows Vista and Windows 7
Hard Disk: At least 16 GB of free space

Minimum specs
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz or AMD equivalent
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 8800, 512 MB memory or ATI equivalent
Memory: 1 GB for Windows XP / 2 GB for Windows Vista and Windows 7
Hard Disk: 8 GB for the game installation and 8 GB for bonus materials

Makes me really damn happy to see such high recommended specs. I think this game is going to look great based on that demanding hardware and the gameplay videos shown.

Recommended specs don't really seem that high to me, but then most companies put their recommended specs retardedly low anyways to not put people off. The screens and few videos already look quite amazing.

I just loaded up the enhanced edition of The Witcher this weekend aaaaand...I really hope they improve the dialogue writing and voice acting this time around. Its really hard to care about the characters when they sound like they're just actors spouting out individual lines without context and half the lines just don't make any godamned sense even with context. I forgot how good the music was, though. It definitely has a great musical score to it.

Only 1 month left.

CD Projekt's Spring Conference, the Witcher part:

Gameplay starts about 15 minutes in. Looks very promising. What do you guys think?
Ignore the Ponglish in the video, obviously, and keep the poor video quality in mind while watching this.

The developer stated that the main plot *alone* constitutes around 40 hours of gameplay. With side quests, exploration and stuff like that it might be twice as long, but it always depends on the way you play in the end.

I just noticed how bad the captions are in the video I posted. Wow.

Man, I'm kind of scared about this game. I love the Witcher 1 so much I don't want this one to be a real dissapointment. Sometimes success with one game can ruin the next game, instead of help it.

However, the makers obviously love their game / franchise, so i think my worries are unfounded.

Yea it was pretty bad. I'm actually surprised so many people stuck through it to realize that the game gets like 100 times better after a certain point. I was practically close to uninstalling it one point as well.
