Day 1 - The Beginning of a Journey
Okay my nerds.
It's been a while and I would have preferred to stream more. Even though I don't play as often (in fact I never did) this is getting hilarious. My internet connection has been awful, and I'm considering getting Housing pay for my cable, since it's not my fault the WiFi that's supposed to be in the price isn't working.
Anyway. This plan has been a long time in the making, so let me map it out for you.
What I wanted ever since mid-last semester is making my appearance on on TL's pages a little more regular. I was contemplating between a weekly - or at least bi-weekly - stream. The problem is; I can't really promise to keep up to that with my current connection. And for about months now I haven't been able to figure out a more stable streaming medium than LiveStream. That shit just won't cut it anymore. My idea was - why not make posts or videos, get them uploaded and linked here?
My plan is to keep this page as my major thread - I'll have links to my streaming threads, and any other goodies I might have. Gathering all the links together would also open up the chance to keep each stream or 'lecture' in a separate thread where you could all ask questions - without getting everything too messed up (yes I am maniacally tidying and organizing my stuff when I let myself think too much).
To do this I will probably reserve a couple of posts at the start of this thread to keep the rest going.
What I can't promise is that each issue would be several hours long and very serious and equally racked up with material. What I can promise, though, is that I can make something up each time - even if I'm home with my parents, all over the world, or am not able to give a proper stream. Heck I can't even promise to make it really regular - but I hope to do so.
For this I would like material. One of the first few posts I'll keep for ideas, where I will list everything in plan - and you could add up all your ideas and stuff you would like to hear about. If I personally don't know enough on the topic to feel I could give a solid run-through, I will do some research on my own and post what I came up with.
These material could be anything, from analyzing a couple of interesting games - either one of my own, or yours, or just a game that caught my eyes - to ranting about psychology or a book review. I'm mostly open to any and every suggestions.
I wanted the first project to be the revamp and posting of my chess marathon stream, but I'm still unable to do it - and since it was at the end of all my exams and a tiring week it wasn't as good as I planned.
Stay tuned though - the first real issue of my chess posting is coming right up tonight. Just give me a little time to present it to you!
PS: I will probably stream some of my gaming, though I don't play all that much anymore lately. I'll fire up a separate thread for it. The general interest will be much less - but there'd always been a few people watching even when I played random stuff before.

This is amazing!~
I watched like all of your big marathon stream. I'm getting back into chess and I'll come up with some topics in a bit that might be cool to hear you talk about.
|
Im interested, wana get better at chess
|
Looks promising. Eagerly awaiting more stuff.
|
You make me wish I played chess. :p
|
Excellent! I think this is a better format, because people can review it later with greater ease.
Looking forward to it! :D
|
Sweet! The marathon was awesome. Can't wait to see how this is gonna work out!
|
Ng5 is such a brilliant chess player, always a pleasure watching his games.
|
Gonna play in my first tournament in a year in April. Don't really wanna study, though. Hopefully I don't get trashed and fall below 2200. -_-;
|
Bump. Made my first post. Link in the post right after the OP in this thread. Will edit OP as well to have it on top until people aren't more familiar with this.
Edit: Should be obvious that any and all feedback is welcome. Either in the threads or in PM.
|
As a devoted pirc player I giggle at most Ng5 plays. I hate Austrian attack though.
It's nice to see chess threads here, I heart chess, and of course, Blitz.
|
This is great. You're marathon was awesome, even though I only caught an hour of it. It will be great to see more!
|
I get chess yesterday so im ready to play even in school :D teach me ! take your time, im waiting
|
I had an great game today. 29 moves of pure awesomeness.
I'll either analyse that for the next issue or do something that you guys asked me in particular.
After being fed up with free college wifi I'm ordering DSL. Should be getting the modem before next Friday.
|
I don't know if you're a serious classical player, but I'd like to hear about how you build a serious opening repertoire. Openings don't mean that much at the 2000 level, but at the same time, it's the one part of the game that I can control. There's nothing worse than entering a game, seeing a move for the first time (especially in a dynamic position) and then suffering for the rest of the game without any counterplay.
|
I won't be able to stream this weekend, but I'll post another good game analysis if I can find one.
Or maybe I can play another good game tomorrow afternoon if the internet-gods are with me. (I know, I know: that sentence is bad in several sense. Don't argue with me, you know who you are.)
I'll get my DSL on Monday, so here's hoping the next issue will include videos.
Peace, Me
Edit: So all in all stay tuned for the second issue upcoming sometimes this weekend.

Awesome! I'm sad that I wasn't aware of this when it was first posted.
Your first post was absolutely splendid and I am looking forward to your next.

I'm curious about something, Ng5, will all your contributions be very high level? I'm an amateur myself and I'm excited that there is this passion for chess in TL.

Issue me a challenge on chess.com My username is alearthcore19 Please, no experts! I would prefer if you are around the 1400-1600 range. My rating is 1209 but only because I lose games on time

I'll play you in a correspondence game, you should be able to live with 3 days per move
I'm not the best, I only have a USCF rating of ~1400 (somewhere around there), but I never really attended tournaments during HS, but I've gotten back in to the swing of things and plan to attend some tournaments here in the future in Philadelphia. I'll help you improve if you want.

Please wait until say... after April 16th

My CFC and FIDE are both around 2200. I will play somebody. -_-;

Still no freaking DSL. I'm buying the axe. Or the chainsaw.
Whoa wait a minute... Chrome doesn't know the word axe...

Hopefully not. I like to beguile myself by thinking I give insights to all different ranges. Personally I do believe I can learn something from everyone, even from the weakest players out there, and sometimes not even the best can teach you something new. Let me get my impulse back and we're good to go.

Nope. It would be a ton of fun, but given the fact that I don't drink, the chances are growing thin.

I will probably try figure everything out this weekend. Meaning new stream provider that runs from my netbook without any problems, the amount of time I can save up for chess, etc. I would like to play and stream tomorrow, but I really am not sure I'll be able to. At most I hope I can get my act together till next Saturday. I know I've been a slacker lately TL-wise.
Sometimes I also feel I could contribute more to other threads, but I'm kind of a lurker person and frankly... Not many people take their sweet two seconds to really think about let alone understand what I write about - even on TL. If the shoe doesn't fit...
That doesn't mean I don't love you all.
|
Hey Ng5, did you (or anyone else for that matter) happen to record that 24hr session that you ran a few weeks back? I am really interested in being able to catch up and watch it over a few days since I missed a good deal of it and really want to get back into Chess after a 16 year hiatus. I would love to devote some study time per day starting later this year, or next, and crank out a 2200 rating for NM title in the coming 10 years but being in my 30s, that goal seems harder and harder as the time goes by and 'kids' these days come in the NM/IM/GM variety shortly after birth.
Am I doomed? I should set my goals on just playing for fun and beating the 'average' 1200 raters during some OTB fun? Looking forward to more streams/feedback from you!

Dear Ng5, I'd like to ask how do you deal as black against a very early knight sac of7 after your nickname, that is Ng5.
Something like: 1e4... 2Bc4... 3Nf3... 4Ng5!?... 5 Nxf7 Kxf7 (I don't write the black's moves because there are several variations).
I'm very unconfortable in this situation, my king is exposed and also contributes to a bad pieces communication. His diagonals are open, his centre is fine, all this for the price of a knight for the f7 pawn.

Okay guys, here's some updates.
I will be back in from September. I will start streaming regulary, because it will finally be the first time I will have had good internet in 12 months. My campus internet screwed me up so much (and you can guess the speed they were repairing it with) that I couldn't even call home on Skype for eight months or so. (Of course they installed a new hotspot in my apartment the day I was moving out.)
I will do coverage for the US Chess Leagues explicitly for TL, which will either happen live, or if my timetable will not let it it will be a weekend coverage of games of the week. Either case it should be several hours weekly, by some very good players - some of which I have personal experience about.
Aside from that I want to start up kind of a 'state of the game' style streaming, it would be dual-weekly, most likely around 2-4 hours (from my previous experiences at least 4) of game/opening/position analysis or random rant on game psychology and other stuff.
I don't know if I myself will keep playing, I don't really feel like playing lately, but I really love teaching and talking about chess, so the rest is not much in danger. (Given I'll get proper internet *rant rant rant*).
I also have a special event in my mind which I will unveil later.
Until then I will try checking my mailbox and threads, so feel free to message me about anything. I will also try and cover the things that I neglected (meaning previous questions in my threads I have answered yet).
Anyway, this is getting longer than expected already.
Peace out, Me
|
|
Sounds good. I also am looking forward to it.
|
Looking forward to it! I'm just starting into chess!
|
Brilliant, I'm just starting out into chess myself, this is ideal!
|
i am excite! TL could use some more chess stream, I feel like it could become very popular considering the nature of starcraft relative to chess

Does anyone have experience with T-Mobile wi-fi?
When I bought my new contract I was offered a hotspot for home, but I don't know how good it is. I've been having awful internet ever since I've arrived to the US. I would like to give higher quality streams, but I can't have cable better than 768 kb/sec upload rate, so I'm thinking about wi-fi...
I'm generally against wi-fi, but in lack of a better option I might grit my teeth for that and a VPN...
