You can level block much faster than you can level one handed; shield bash people to death at lower levels, then block giant attacks later on and you'll maxed it out easily. Wait nevermind, I just got around my computer to try that and I typed in exactly what you said. The lever just deactivated and does not do anything now... | ||

One thing I'm confused about: I accidentally got a companion killed by a mob while out and about and after looting her, got the key to her house. Does that make it my house? Or do I still need to purchase a house myself to be considered its resident? | ||

You have to buy your own house. Having the key just makes it easier to break in. You can also pickpocket keys from NPC's and rob their houses empty. | ||
