Switching between spells for dual wielding seems really clunky, is there a way to unequip the right hand spell and replace it with another without having to equip and unequip a 1 handed weapon? Also is fire lightning or ice better? Or is one not really better than the other? So far it's really fun, my other character that I finished the main quest line on was a 2handed warrior type. Seems like playing with pure magic is harder so far though, but I'm assuming it gets easier later on? I'm around lvl 10 right now.
you want to dualcast all destruction and restoration spells
put all your main spells in the favorites menu and switch around as needed
except for a few specific situations, if you're casting two entirely different destruction spells, you're doing it wrong
fire = raw damage but harder to aim ice = it's like concussive shells lightning = hitscan but less damage for mana cost
unless previous elder scrolls, there is also no downside to wearing armor as a mage in skyrim, so you should put some perks in one of the armor trees or you will start to have a lot of trouble once you reach late lvl 20s
Oh lol uesp said (about a week after release) that armor reduces the effectiveness of spells, so I went with alteration as armor. Even with the mage armor perk, ebonyflesh only gives 300 armor, and since each piece of actual armor worn gives 25 hidden armor rating, that's the same as 200 armor from light/heavy armor. 36% damage reduction. I'm currently lvl 74, in mage robes, and I'm not having problems. I also fight in melee combat or use bows as necessary, all without armor. Master difficulty.

this is wrong. wearing armor makes your spells more expensive
You are mistaken. Assuming it's unenchanted, armor has no affect on spell cost.

I believe Ebony>glass, but I haven't seen a single piece of Ebony in stores yet, I found an ebony bow (40 dmg) somewhere.
The light armor side of the smithing perk is better for bows than the heavy side of the smithing perks.
How do you figure? Daedric and Ebony are two best materials for weapons and bows are no exception.
You can get Elven and Glass much faster than Daedric and Ebony. You also don't have to spend perks on Dwemer and Orcish. Daedric and Ebony are long-term investment.

Given how quickly you can level smithing, nothing comes "much" faster than ebony.

Light armor, health (50 pts in stamina for when you get the bow zoom perk). Lighter weight bows draw faster, so they are better for open confrontations. Heavier bows tend to have higher damage, so they are best for sneak attacks.
Skills:
Archery Light Armor - Both light and heavy armors can reach the armor cap of 567, but light armor will allow you to move quickly even at low levels. One-Handed, for when enemies close the distance Block, if you wish to increase your close-quarters capabilities Sneak if you want to play a sneaky character Restoration is handy for healing. Illusion to improve sneaking capabilities. If you choose to add this, put 50 points into magicka as well.
This above build is quite open-ended, only requiring you to be lvl 46 to complete. I omitted the archery steady hand perk because it isn't necessary, it's more about preference. You can get away fine with just 5/5 armsman under one-handed, since that won't be your main method of dealing damage. Moving in light armor creates little to no noise, so I omitted most of the sneak perks as well. The points in restoration will allow you to cast a 150 hp/stamina healing spell at half cost, which should be sufficient in emergencies. The points put into illusion allow you to cast muffle (novice spell) and invisibility (expert spell) at a more reasonable magicka cost. As a long range stealth character, invisibility isn't really necessary so hold off on that until you're done with getting all the necessary perks. Once you get these perks though, feel free to get whatever you feel like. Keep in mind that putting perks into alchemy/enchanting/smithing can ruin the game experience by making things too easy, even on the highest difficulty.

I'm a wood elf as well. I should've probably focussed on archery as elf speciality but i went onehand/block .
An useful tip for those who fight close combat and/or use the fps camera, you can change the FOV in the console. Just open console and type: fov number (i find 110 to be great fov for the first person camera).
I have a question, why does my trap a soul spell not work? I tried it on orcs and thalmor agents so far and each time it said i don't have a gem big enough. WTF? I had greater sould gems and grand sould gem as well.... It pisses me off to always have to spend money on soul gems, they cost a lot.

You are mistaken. Assuming it's unenchanted, armor has no affect on spell cost.
Well, generally Robes are 10x better than Armor as far as default enchantments goes for a mage. Also, certain perks, like Mage Armor, only works when your overall armor rating is 0, but using Ebonyflesh with Mage Armor lvl 3 will actually give you a quite decent armor ratio even though you're not wearing any, plus you'll have more magic-based enchantments on your Robes.

You can put the same enchantments on armor that you can put on robes.
As for how well alteration's protection spells work.... well... they scale like shit compared to actual armor. You can use a fully perked out ebonyflesh and its measly 36% damage reduction which has to be recast periodically, or you can easily hit the AR cap with light armor and have 80% DR all the time.

No, don't worry about it. Aside from a few references nothing in the world really changes. Your free-roaming experience will be largely the same after you complete it.

You need black soul gems for the souls of humans. You can only capture animal souls in normal soul gems.

Yeah, know. Just saying that even though using armor is better even for a mage, it's still perfectly viable to not use it if you want to feel like you're playing a real mage. Guess it depends on how RP you are
