I never even quite understood how it worked in Oblivion >_< I've found a few sites around, but I wasn't sure if stuff changed and if there are people who keep a close enough eye on the development to know what is current. here's how it works in oblivion as you probably already know, skills increase by actually doing something with that skill, smack things with a sword to level blade, run around to level athletics, pick locks to level security, etc. first, in order to level up, you need to increase your major skills 10 times. when you reach the level up screen, it gives you an option to pick 3 of your stats and increase them for all stats except luck, the maximum amount that you can increase a stat in one level is +5 in order to get +5 in a stat, you need to increase skills that are "governed" by that statistic for example, if you level up heavy armor 3 times, then armorer 7 times, that's 10 levels of endurance, for your +5 in that stat the main problem with this system is you often need to do counter intuitive things in order to get +5 to all stats on a level up. in particular, you often want to set your major skills as things you don't want to use on that character if you were to level up nothing but major skills (which is what most people do on their first playthrough) then your character would get really small stat increases at level up, and would ultimately become so weak that it can't progress any further without abusing the difficulty slider | ||

So I can just do whatever I want to do without having to focus on maximizing my character. This article explains the Skyrim approach pretty well. | ||
