I've played a couple hours as a mage and am up to finding the golden claw and have also gone to whiterun to ask for reinforcements. I'm feeling quite underwhelmed so far. I am still level 1 and do not know if that is normal progress. I've done one or two sidequests but haven't upgraded my armor or spells. A few questions I can think of: 1) Is there a class that is particularly beginner friendly? I don't want pure hack and slash but at the moment all I do as a mage is walk up to the person and spam fire. It feels rather...plain. 2) What should I do to upgrade gear? Is it as simple as farming gold from quests to buy better gear? When do I get my first 'upgrade'? Any other tips to enjoy the maximum out of the game would be appreciated. There are no 'classes' in the game - only skills, though they're categorized into the VERY general subfields of combat, magic and stealth. Basically it's up to you how you want to play the game from there.
As to upgrading gear, just play the game. As you level up so will your enemies, but they'll also drop better loot/treasure/etc. If you want to take it a step further you should invest time into training your smithing/enchanting as you'll be able to improve your gear, but it's not necessary depending on your style of play.

It apparently works like this, dungeons have a level range, for example 15-30. If you enter it below leevl 15, the monsters will be level 15. If you enter it anywhere between 15 and 30 the monsters will be your level and if you enter it above level 30 the monsters will be level 30.

I thought that was one of the more interesting quests in the game. It is a key part of probably the best/fastest exploit to max out your levelling to 81.

My first char was level 42 after 31 hours played, I then made a new char that was level 26 in 5-6 hours, and level 40 in another day of playing by mostly using professions. Just getting levels isn't hard unless all you do is try to kill stuff, on the other hand it's really really easy if you level stuff like smithing and pickpocketing.

It's like one where you level up a skill, but you level up alot of them instead. I haven't noticed anything bad from it at all ^^ + Show Spoiler +There's an exploit where you can read that book over and over, increasing your skills and leveling up quickly. I tried it, it worked fine, but I loaded before it and just put it in my book shelf for later instead of using it.

I loved this game, until I noticed that you were not able to kill any important NPC, why?!?!!?!?!?!? :-((((( Only noobs kill stuff before they finish an important quest.

Yeah, I think it works like that. Since I leveled up, bosses and bandit chiefs have become really hard to beat and mages are just killing me in 3 sec, I have to be really careful to kill them. Don't know if extreme is really enjoyable after this.

I think some bosses scale beyond the rest of the dungeon. There is this dungeon where you have to unlock the main chamber with the ceremonial axe and sword. I was able to just 1 shot every trash then the 1st boss kills me with a single arrow in my ass. Yeah... my ass is an essential part of my body :S. Had to pop berserk and cut him down with time slow shout.
I believe you level "faster" in high difficulty just because things do more damage to you and they are more durable (thus requiring more attacks).

with my 2nd char, a 1hand+shield+heavy armor skilled char (+ some buffing/healing magic) i must say master is hard as fuck ^^ my archer before did play on expert and was pretty doable, but...
can't say it will stay like this, but i'm lvl 21 right now and when exploring caves i'm doing fine except for when it gets deeper... i often have to go down on difficulty cause i'm already too deep for wanting to leave ^_^
one thing why master is hard for me might be that i don't powerlevel smithing (got it at like 56 right now and have no perks in it yet), enchanting (btw is that shout for faster hitting better than weapon enchanments? found it today) and alchemy (which i would like to level faster but it takes so long when you don't buy things ^^)!
but yeah probably just a starting thing, i know my archer was pretty weak early on. already got 55% magic resistance (= reduce? is it even additive?) and it still can get more ^_^

The shout is incredibly powerful. You can kill dragons really fast with it if you have some stamina potions to keep your stamina up.

What about if you use Marked for Death (negative armor shout) instead? Doubly so if we talk about a double-enchanted weapon.
You gotta keep in mind it's a case of Enchants + Shout vs using EF.

I'll be blunt.
The oblivion thieves guild was better than the skyrim one, but that's about the end of what skyrim did worse and this is entirely subjective.

Where are those Mage/Thief/Warrior stones? I musta skipped them or something.
And some of the game glitches are really annoying. I managed to get stuck in the first Companion's quest when you get caged in because Farkas killed a bunch of bandits and actually made a roadblock of bodies for himself so he couldn't save me. Also the game just insta-crashes in Bonechill Passage no matter what. Installing on my laptop and hoping that'll work.

BTW what do you guys think it's better? Join the legion, the companions,... or just nothing? (Or is it possible to join multiple groups?)

Use a shrine, the most common one would be the Talos one in Whiterun with a loud priest yelling beside a giant statue. Storekeeps like to just say "oh my you look sick" even though you are not. Check under active effects under the magic tab.

The best shout is Time Slow. It is essentially a reverse elemental fury with a defensive bonus. As you go up in ranks your enemies are slowed to a pause while you remain at just a slightly slowed state.
Even without the use of Elemental Fury, stamina drain can most likely compete with the effectiveness of Elemental Fury, (dual wield gains stronger power attack via perk while 2 handers have Sweep). Stamina drain allows you to spam power attacks non-stop (you can power attack even if you only have a smidgen of stamina gained via drain). Power attacks staggers, break blocks, and also have special effects when talented.

You can join everything. I recommend the legion/stormcloak 1st as those quests are very easy (followed by Companion quests). You have to kill a dragon priest towards the end of the mage guild quest which can be painful if you do not have any shock resistance equip+potion ready. You might even just die from the bone dragon at the beginning of the Labyrinthian.
Thief guild rewards you with a pretty good set of light armor towards the end but is scaled towards your level: so you might want to save that for when your level is high to get the best version. Dark brotherhood quests are pretty easy and the "standard issue" gear is very good if you play an assassin type character with sneak (double backstab damage gloves, muffled boots, 35% easier sneak hood: at the end of the whole chain you also get 20k septims as a reward).
