Problem with the game is that ranged classes are the easiest to play, no question. Doing huge damage from range and being able to kite and abuse the stupid ai gets old real fast though. I don't know how you could balance melee and ranged being equal (i guess talking about balance in a single player game is stupid).

My latest character, the one I've played the most, is level 38. I haven't done much with the main story, mainly because I really wanted to focus more on side quests and take my time. I had another character I raced to the last part and it made the character feel weak and unfinished. So this time I went with 1H/Shield, Heavy Armor, Smithing and Enchanting. Smithing and Enchanting kind of ruined this character for me. Both are super easy to level and entirely too strong. I even forced myself to only level Smithing with ore I found and I still ended up with full Daedric armor around level 30. I got Enchanting to about level 70 and with +1H Damage enchanted on my Ring/Amulet, Life Drain/Steal/Leech (whatever its called) on my Sword and armor/resists elsewhere... I don't even need to potion and things die fast. Oddly, this was the goal but I got there a lot faster/sooner than I expected, I don't know if I can finish the story with this character (which sucks because that was obviously the goal) because its too boring... I'm either going to start over another character (again) and ban Enchanting/Smithing for myself or turn the difficulty up and keep trying to find the challenge. It just seems Skyrim's scaling is off, I either feel SUPER weak or I'm way too strong and everything feels like a joke. Try as a mage playing illusionist, it's kind of hard. :/

I've turned the skill up to Expert, but I intend to try Master shortly if Expert isn't satisfying. I'm @ 39 with maxed Smithing and Enchanting and I'm also about to crank the difficulty up because I can pretty much 2 shot bosses with my daedric warhammer...

I am playing that I got mauled with my destro mage by a bear :D But that was without a companion, using lvl2 spells without perk for half mana cost, and I didn't summon a fire atronach that I usually have around. BTW, is there a way to have both zombie and atronach summoned?

Dual cast Sparks. Find the minimal amount of time it takes to fire a burst of lightning. Move the character backwards from attack and repeat. It does a lot more damage than holding down the mouse buttons and saves more magicka. At level 22, I got the Gauldor Amulet.

Yes, the final perk in the Conjuration Tree lets you have 2 summons at once (2 undead, 2 atronauch, or 1 of each). I would use Dead Thrall to perma-raise Thalmor Mages or Forsworn Pillager mage as they both cast spells (Ice/Lightning) and also each summons their own Atronach. 4 total pets doing your bidding rocks and let's you get some practice with weapons if you'd like since you have plenty of DPS going on.

Now that I know most magic is boring I'm just going to beef out the heavy armour and swing a 2H at everything and cleave through the game. That's boring too but at least I'll go through things quickly. Don't think I'll fight the first dragon, I'll just chill around like a normal human being. Dragonborns are too mainstream.

Wait didn't you just wrote a rant some days ago about how boring this game is and that you cba to play it anymore? How can you play the game when you think it's boring? I don't get it :S

It just seems Skyrim's scaling is off, I either feel SUPER weak or I'm way too strong and everything feels like a joke. what i heard from somewhere on the TL forums is that u play on a difficulty where things take around 5-10ish hits (or w/e you want really) and you use the console command to lower your health by alot so u can be 2/3 shot by the weaker mobs and 1/2shot by the higher tier ones. then you could go as a melee player and not use any potions or healing spells. this way you have to use crowd control and companions while darting around trying to avoid damage. makes dragons really hard and sometimes forces you to use a bow or find large areas where a dragon can land but you can still hide. you could teach your companions healing spells i guess. also for extra hard mode you cant do any quick saves or waits for saves. and if you lose a companion or horse ect no reloads. i would personaly still wait befor bosses tho ![]() what im saying is there is enough flexibility to make the game alot harder if you choose + Show Spoiler + The problem is when you turn your health down a ton or turn the enemy damage up or disallow healing, you very quickly cross a threshhold where it goes from spammy hand to hand combat straight into abusing the terrible enemy AI. There is literally no way to make this game difficult if you are playing a ranged character. Kiting and hiding behind obstacles leads directly into this kind of abuse. If you play a squishy ranged character you can't just not kite or hide, but if you do you won't ever take damage as long as you have a bit of patience. When my 100% mage was in endgame I could be oneshot by every decently powerful enemy, but it still wasn't hard at all because I could just walk around a tree and they never hit me. Theres no such thing as "strategically darting around to avoid damage" in this game. If you dart around at all you wont take any damage, period. If you tried to play a melee character I just doubt it would work. As all the decent enemies have many attacks that you just can't avoid taking significant damage from no matter how skilled you are at dodging, barring just standing ontop of a rock and letting them glitch out. I guess you could get a weapon with really long reach and just nip in and out for like an hour, but thats not really any harder, it just takes longer. TLDR: with this level of AI there isn't really any way to increase the difficulty i kinda disagree ![]() i can see a ranger being just as viable by using crowd control spells and taking on as many enemies at once as they can. illusion + alteration + dragon shouts lots of crowd control. i do understand tho how some people feel that they should play the most optimal way which is to abuse Ai but it got old for me. (tho it was kinda necisary in my early lvls) no ones forcing you to play if its boring or ez

On November 21 2011 23:24 B.I.G. wrote: im just wondering what the people complaining about the difficulty feel would be an apropriate difficulty? In order to make the game more difficult they would really have to to change the combat and gameplay quite a bit, probably take some queues from fighting games and add some more depth to the melee. Enemies having more complex and specific melee attacks that you are forced to react too differently (take some pages out of Dark Souls book).Ex, an overhead attack would be dodged by a sidestep and a swing would be ducked etc, instead of enemies just having a heavy and light punch as they do currently. AI pathing would have to be improved alot, giving most monsters the ability to jump the same height as the player or giving many more of them the ability to use a ranged attack as well. Some sort of combo system to melee would add alot to the game other than just mashing and allow for higher skillcap without being just retardedly fat enemies. More spells and abilities that combine or require combination to kill certain enemies also would help alot, just look at all the ways DOTA or Fighting style games add to skill: Delayed skills that require prediction and abilities you stack in order to have different effects. I mean currently there isn't even a reliable way to slow enemies in Skyrim, it would add to the difficulty if you had to use 3 spells instead of fireball spam to effectively kill an enemy....one to slow them, one to hit a weak point, then flame them or something like that. The skill involved would go up a huge amount if you NEEDED to use a ward to block certain attacks and it was mapped to something easily accessible. They would probably have to revamp the way you use spells to make using this many spells practical. Mostly though the game just needs better enemies, enemies with more interesting abilities that make you do things other than just run up and whack the shit out of them. Enemies with abilities that make you back away to avoid an explosion or put mines on the ground or place temporary walls or a low kick you jump over or an ability that shoots big bugs that clamp onto your arm and you have to beat them with your sword in order to regain use of that limb. In short: the game needs a serious amount of modding to make it more difficult.

+ Show Spoiler + And it was weird, I ended having to exploit the AI a bit. I was at lvl 20 when I fought Morokei for the Staff of Magnus. For about an hour I tried to kill him in the regular/honest/fair/expected way with my mage spells, somewhat decent dodging without exploiting the AI/path and having Lydia chop him up close. Both me and Lydia get two shotted by the guy's lightning attack. At first I tried various potion combinations whilst trying to keep the fight fair (as in not exploiting the AI) but it was basicly impossible with the amount of health and damage Morokei dealt. I got him to maybe 75% before my mana ran out. So, after trying honestly and fairly for an hour, I decided to heck with it and equipped my Skysteel 2h sword with flame enchant. I was going to hack him down at close range and see how that would fare, if it all. I decided to interrupt the last wizard that binds Morokei only when I was next to Morokei so I could start hacking away at him straight away, I would ignore the wizard himself. And Morokei was down in about 10 hits and never attacked me. His AI somehow just bugged out and he only tried walking/running away whilst his HP was getting chopped to bits. Easiest fight ever and I got the staff no problem. Still, at the same time, when I tried to fight him fairly, I stood no chance. Difficulty wasn't the issue, it was how fighting the boss fairly is impossible and fighting him unfairly is way too easy. They need to fix that kind of thing so that fighting a boss on even ground is hard but not impossible (no 2-shotting me and having 2k+ HP himself) and that the AI can't be exploited as much. Other than that the whole questline was pretty epic.
