To rename devotions. There's another trick somewhere in pauper iirc. It's not important.

Circle of Protection: Blue suddenly becomes Circle of Protection: Green
Blood Moon suddenly transforms everything into islands
etc...

ok but how is that useful when for the cypher effect you have to successfully hit them, and then it ends at the end of your turn?

From GP Detriot's coverage page:
Shahar Shenhar - Jund: I was testing with Huey Jensen, Owen Turtenwald, and Reid Duke in Las Vegas. We're all playing the same type of Jund deck, but it's a secret why until tomorrow. anyone have the list that these guys are running?

It's not that relevant. The card is very narrow in its scope until we get something that's more reinforced towards devotion. As of right now, there's not a whole lot you can do with it.
Like you can do some cute stuff with the enchant mountain, destroy mountain cards from Theros, but that's all I can realistically think of in the new standard.

Trait Doctoring seems much sicker when you consider it can impact devotion. You can use it to turn on/off the Gods.
Also, I have a pile of really good Junk cards and have been looking to build a midrange deck. Some amount of Blood Barons, Obzedats, Voices, Varolzes, Smiters, and Lions will be beating peoples' faces in sometime soon if I have anything to do with it.

I still don't think it's any good. 99% of its constructive usefulness is just as a safety valve for the devotion mechanic. The remaining 1% is running a god off color

Only on your turn, unfortunately. Having it only as a sorcery narrows the card down further.

Well yeah, but letting you alpha through a God seems fun, turning on your god seems fun, and making a billion tokens with the "Comes into play, make tokens = to devotion" cards seems nice.

Happy Birthday, and my LGS was joking that their foil Trait Doctorings would now be worth money.

Hmm so have played a couple of theros drafts now, and it seems alright. Not in love with it yet. White and green seem pretty strong, green has great creatures, and some good enchantments like one that costs 2g, has flash, and gives +2/+2, great heroic enabler + combat trick. Speaking of heroic enablers, those creatures turn into fatties. There doesn't seem to be a ton of removal, other than for enchantments (which to be fair, is relevant). But there is a fair bit more to play before I get an actual feel for the set. It doesn't feel very slow, that's for sure.

What happens when you turn off devotion by a removal spell after attackers have been declared and a god was one of them. Does the god just get removed from combat?

I was told for a prerelease event near my home that you have to pick a hero ahead of time, and friends told me the white hero was the only one not claimed yet, so I picked white with the pre-signups. It is a 6 booster sealed... does anyone know what the hero is and how that works?

Probably start with them in play or something?

Duels of the Planeswalkers, if you're willing to drop another 10 bucks onto Steam.
EDIT: Pardon me. You probably already know how to play, lol. In terms of learning the recent tactics and decks, that's another matter.

Netdecking is awful advice. Each player plays differently and can win better with different types of decks. Yes some people can netdeck the "best deck" and win, but lots of players(myself included) win more when they approach the format from their own perspective and building/testing their own deck.

You can't expect him to build a deck without even knowing what cards are in the pool. And even if he does, he won't understand why it's winning or losing. If you want to understand a format, your first priority should be to look up all of the tier 1&2 decks and play around with several of them. Rogue deckbuilding can't be successful unless you understand what it is you're trying to beat.
