Whenever I go to my local cs I always check out what's new in Magic. It's been like.. 8 years of me just "checking" on shit.
I kind of want to play magic online, but I'm on a budget these days.
How much will it cost me to play? I don't want to play with shit decks, and my budget isn't Kraft Dinner poor. But I don't want to spend $10-$20ea on rares/lands.
I mostly played mono black because of cards like Laquatus's champion and zombies, and just mean awful things 'death' cards.I started dabbling into UB though.
Anyway, anyone know a ballpark on just how much it would cost to start up and have a baller deck? (just one for now) and a decent SB? Most Standard decks right now are probably in the range of $300-$400. R/G aggro is the cheapest competitive deck at like $60. However, there is a black control archetype in this format, and it's pretty cheap to build: http://www.channelfireball.com/home/breaking-through-black-by-popular-demand-14th/Travis Woo's Wolf Run version can be found on that same site if you browse the articles. I don't think the decks have very many huge money cards, they're probably under $100. If you're really on a budget, you can pull off a good Boros deck without the shocklands for under $50 and steal a few games here and there. It's not going to consistently beat the $300-400 decks but you'll definitely be able to compete with better draws. Aggro decks are really good in the format and there are budget alternatives for the majority of the expensive cards in them. Thank you for both of your responses. That was exactly the information I needed. Appreciated. Edit: One more thing actually... When you purchase cards, and they eventually get phased out, will you be able to carry those cards over? Or do you have to purchase different cards even with the exact same abilities ei. Bird's of Paradise, or lands like Blood Crypt, or an older mutilate card, etc... I should add, as long as they are 'legal', can you use your old phased out cards. I hope I explained that good enough?? Yes.

Just to follow up from what iGrok said, the style of the card doesn't matter. So for example, even if you use a 4th Edition Birds of Paradise (BoP) it would still be considered legal in the Modern format because BoP because BoP has been printed in at least one Modern legal set (e.g. original Ravnica) even though it uses the old card look. Same goes for white/black bordered cards.
Some cards may have had their wording slightly changed during reprints (for example, compare the original wording for Wrath of God in 5th Edition to 9th Edition Wrath of God. In these instances, the rule is to follow what is called the "Oracle Text". In the website I linked to, it's the wording in the white box (between the spell cost and the illustator) in the text next to the card. The official MtG Gatherer will also display Oracle text. In tournaments, if you have any concerns about the text on a card (e.g. if an opponent has a foreign language or old card) you can always call a judge who will provide you with most recent oracle text.

Damn... Just got offered 25 grand from a friend to startup a hobby shop where I'd own 70 percent of the business. These next few weeks should be interesting. Have a month to decide. So much research to do.

Maybe its just me but this makes no sense from a business perspective...

A lot of my friends own/have owned gaming shops. If you decide to go for this, do yourself a favor and focus more on the anime/manga side of things than the gaming side. It's possible to do both, but anime is way more profitable.
Also, location isn't as important as you might think, since it's a niche market and people will seek you out. You're better off getting a bigger place in a meh location so you can have plenty of room for gaming tables etc.
Edit: Would this be in Vegas or AZ?
|
Vegas has way too many gaming/hobby/mtg shops right now, it's over saturated and there is a lot of competition for at least the magic players, so probably somewhere else.
|
Would be anywhere I want it. He went with me to the PTQ in Vegas this weekend and was so pissed he decided he wanted to invest in one he could call his own. He has other businesses he operates, though, and doesn't have the time to run another. I guess I'm lucky? It should be noted that 25k for him isn't as meaningful as it is for me.
Edit: blue is correct. I don't think I'd want to open one in Vegas because I don't think the market could support it.

Well, honestly every region is oversaturated with gaming shops at the moment, which is one reason why it's better to not open one or focus on non-gaming related hobbies. I guess you should either try to open it somewhere remote like Flagstaff, or try a populated area and outdo the businesses already there. The latter option is more risky of course.

Try looking on Wizard's site to see where there is/isn't? Maybe listen to the complaints of the people in the area to see who of that local scene you would get.
Our local scene get split up that way, quite amusingly I might add along the stereotypes of MtG players.

That sounds like a phenomenal opportunity, Risen! I hope he's being legit with you about it.... :-o

Some people trade based on SCG prices, some other places, as long as people are using the same one. Some people like to ask you what you put on certain cards, as in they'll point to a card and ask you what you put on it. I personally hate trading with those people because its annoying since they are just looking for you to underestimate some of the larger cards. So have an idea of what your bigger value cards are and trade from there. If you don't feel comfortable with a trade, then don't trade.
Also, keep an eye on your stuff, there are thieves so keep everything by you, make sure you don't get distracted by multiple traders. Stealing from people isn't that hard so be aware of that.

On the plus side though, you don't pay the upkeep to keep up with Standard and you get to play with all the broken cards so I guess there's that hehe.

Also I plan to trade / buy some cards any etiquette things at these events I should know about when trading? (does everyone go by SCG prices?) Judi's posts was good. Just to emphasise, there are a lot of different kinds of people trying to trade. Some people just wanting to get cards they needs, but there are also jerks who are trying to get as much value as possible and be more than happy to screw you over. If someone asks "What do you value that at?" it means they're probably waiting for you to take a guess, guess wrong and profit from it. (The whole Pack to Power and value thing by Medina I think brought out a lot of ugliness in the community.)
Bring a smartphone so you can check prices online. If you're ever in doubt, you can always walk away. No one is forcing you to commit to anything. That being said, if there is a card you absolutely want to have, don't try to show it too much. It's like dealing with used car salesmen in a way. Not everyone is a shark trying to prey upon you, but there are enough of them that you want to protect yourself.
And keep and eye on everything. Always. Way too many sob stories about collections being stolen and stuff. MtG Cards are worth money, people can be careless, and you might never meet some of these people again. Don't put your deck box down somewhere, always have it in hand or in a bag. Don't take a bunch of cards out of a binder unless you're actually executing a trade ("Oh, nvm I don't want this stack of cards any more and I'll just give you back one less card"). If you're being pressured by multiple people at the same time, it's ok to tell people to leave so you don't get distracted by someone while their buddy nicks stuff.
Simple rule: Would you be sad if you lost X card/deck box/binder? If yes, never let it leave your sight.
I don't play 2HG or much sealed so I don't have much advice to give here. Gl hfhf~

There are bots who trade 5 commons for 6 and so on, anyone know how they are supposed to work? Every time I try they say they can't find my cards

Did you make your cards tradable?

I'm assuming you haven't marked your cards as tradeable. Go to your collection, right click on a blank area and press the "Mark all cards tradeable" option (or something similar).
Keep in mind, if you do this the bot may not know which of your cards to take. If you have certain ones you wish to trade away you can simply locate THOSE ones in your collection and raise the number of them that are "tradeable" to the appropriate amount.

Yes, anyway, apparently when I post about something on TL the problem disappears. No, wait, I went to remove a few cards from the list and now it's happening again. So I guess it's just the beta client.
