Got back from my friend's home after a weekend of pre-releases.
Selesnya seems the strongest cards in terms of Limited format drafts and decks, at least for raw numbers. Azorius and Golgari have potential as well mainly due to stalling for time or trying to outpace the Selesnya cards.
A friend of mine "lived the dream" and populated the 8/8 vigilance Elemental from the Grove of the Guardian promo card for Selesnya until he had 7 on the field before finally beat his opponent, who was playing Azorius detain/control.
As for Standard, I've decided to go Junk Reanimator and go full-boar into the reanimation package; 4 Grisly Salvages and 4 Mulches, reanimating Griselbrand, Avacyn, Angel of Serenity, Angel of Glory's Rise, and Thragtusk. The sideboard I remove the Reanimation package and shift into Junk Midrange and look to overwhelm my opponent with card value gained by Restoration Angel, Thragtusk, Gavony Township, Vault of the Archangel and Angel of Serenity.
Also, there's an infinite combo in Standard now. Falkenrath Aristocrat, Fiend Hunter, and Angel of Glory's Rise. You exile your Angel with Fiend Hunter. Feed the Hunter to Aristocrat, it gets a +1/+1 counter. Angel comes back, revives the Hunter from your graveyard, and you exile the Angel again with the Hunter. Rinse and repeat until you win. It can also make infinite Wolf tokens and get you infinite life if you have a second Hunter, second Angel and a Huntmaster of the Fells to do the combo with.

went 2-3 at a prerelease with around 65 people.
golgari set, unfortunately i got some shitty pulls so i had to splash red even though white is 10x better with it. every game i got Pack Rats, i won by miles. that card is insane.

I had Pack Rats and Armada Wurm in my last pool. The Rats are better then the Wurm. A rare bomb like that is not going to be very pleasant to play against for the next 3 months. Its not even fun to play with, you only have one line of play and your games end very fast.

yeah pretty much.
i ended up discarding all of my hand each time and face rolling my rats at them, and they had no answer, although i saw some people had opened up judgement day type cards no wants to put it in their deck for the draft.

I did well going BRG, ofc i had both guild leaders which if they resolved trolol face rolling, also rakdo's guildmage so much better then golgari guildmage imo

Dude. It's hardly card disadvantage when each card you discard pumps your entire team and gives you a new rat. And there's one rare in the set that deals with it once you get going? Rat is insanebonkers without populate.

I used to play mtgo during the otj and ols days, was pretty good at it but I got scammed by a friend who claimed he sold his account and didn't tell me, and I gave it up. Do people still play on mtgo? Just wondering whether it would be worth it to invest some money since I feel like playing magic again.
|
MTGO is very active and used a lot. And how much money you invest depends on how competitive you want to be.
|
I would want to make 1 standard or block competitive deck, depending on what is more played, and hopefully draft a bit, since I figure when a new set comes out is the best time to get back into the game, as I would be at less of a disadvantage.

You clearly have not played with the card, it is not card disadvantage at all. Having 5 5/5's on turn 5 is pretty hard to beat, yes there is detention sphere but it is also a rare and not something you should play around unless you see it (even then you probably shouldnt)

It comes down to a fundamental misunderstanding of card disadvantage is.
Card disadvantage is when you get 2 for 1'd, you spend 2 cards to deal with someone's 1 card, or pay 2 of your cards to do 1 thing.
Pack rats gives you 1 creature for 1 card. It's a spellshaper, not card disadvantage. It can turn a land into a creature when you need a creature, or you can play the land and discard something else, it gives you more options and is pure upside. It's a proper bomb rare and I'm disappointed I didn't open one.

Nothing with bonfire in it. I can't believe that is going near $50 now. I understand that lots of people want to put it in a new G/W/r deck or whatever, but still... Is this because no one opened AVR packs because of the shitty draft format? Will I ever be able to get bonfires/entreats/tamiyos for a reasonable price?
I wan't to play something silly like this for standard, but I can't see it beating more that one centaur healer/huntmaster/thragtusk + Show Spoiler + 4x delver 4x nivix guild mage (not electomancer?) 4x guttersnipe 4x snapcaster (auger of bolas if on a budget) 4x thoughtscour 4x unsummon (silent departure?) 4x incinerate 4x izzet charm 4x pillar of flame (mizzum mortars) 24 land

If you don't play around something like detaining sphere you just gonna lose the game if they hit that card, which wasn't hard to do with the sealed guild packs in the format. It will be a bigger bomb in draft then it was in the prerelease even though.

You're just setting yourself up in the pre-release event though esp against detaining sphere which was an easy rare for azu to hit, all they have to do is hit the card then you're left with no answers and no rats, and if you hit your rats early enough you don't have any board development past rats the game is over if it poped. seeing how popular azu was in my local store it sold out before sunday shit was really easy to run into infact i ran into detain sphere four times over the 3 pre release events i went to that's over 15 games nearly every 3 games.
|
Slowdown...Rats turns all your lands into creatures. That in itself is worth it. Nobody said you had to sacking spells.
|
i actually ordered the cards for a rat deck last night if you play discard spells with your rats then they don't get to hold onto shit like detention sphere and if u don't need the discard spells then you discard them yourself for more rats
|
I don't know why you would order bulk rares...

Because I don't have access to infinite cards?

I think he means because they overprice stuff so badly prior to the release.
Whoever asked about Stab wound, it's amazing, card won me several games on my way to winning the event.

Buy 2 pre-con decks of w/e you like from this block and smash them together. Will only run you 40 and you have as good a chance as anyone not running top of the line decks, will at least offer you a good time without feeling like you can't win a single game.
