Pulled the most mediocre Azo deck of the night so far and it still felt very consistent. Glad I came and asked for advice here. Bouncing your own detainers gets silly. Azorius Charming your own detain blocker and dropping him come your turn is awesome.

I picked Azorious but I think it's inferior to Selesnya in Sealed. It's a combination of the "Centaur Courser-ness" of Selesnya and the fact that they will also have access to (inferior) detain cards in White. Their Detain is also superior because Detains efficacy is muted by the fact that UW already attacks pretty evasively.

Even a sweet Azorious curve out is not overwhelming: Arrester or Fencing Ace into Skyknight into Skyknight plus Fairy Invaders bouncing Arrester? That's about as beastly as I can imagine it and, depending who's on the play, it doesn't even really blow Drudge Beetle, Crocodile, Indrik out of the water.

EDIT: Also, Bloodfray Giant is a complete monster.

Bears further testing tomorrow beyond the simple stuff I've done tonight of just building decks and drawing opening hands/the next 7 turns. I like the way Azo has been running, but I'm thinking about running every single guild against the Azo and Sel decks to see how it works out.

Been testing Azo and Sel pulls for hours now and Sel pulls ahead in consistency, but Azo can get some out of this world godlike draws.

Edit: For example, just pulled these two. Both decks were solid, in my opinion, but the Sel one didn't tend to run out of gas like the Azo one. Most matches (including those not testing these decks, was about 6-4 and both decks beat golg/izz/rak 7-3) had Azo getting Sel down to 6 life before Sel stabilized and then turned the game around. I think Sel having access to most of the same fliers (or even subpar fliers like the 1/3) is very relevant here.

Double Edit: The matches where Azo won it was b/c bounce on tokens is awesome, but Sel being able to splash pretty much any third color is awesome, where I find trouble splashing anything outside of green picking Azo (and it's risky even then)

Comes down to consistency and I think Sel is more consistent. Changed from Azo back to Sel.

Yeah I live in flagstaff now where the scene is even worse (turnout is fine/maybe even high in vegas/flag in my experience, but people are just bad lol). Visiting my friends, though, so what can ya do XD

Did you end up playing Selesnya in the end, Risen? Any particularly interesting twists/tricks or entertaining plays cross your path?

My deck was mediocre as shit lol. Selesnya populating birds, followed by populating centaurs, followed by populating 8/8s won it. The consistency was amazing.

Edit: there were some epic misplays on my part, though! Too tired. Writeup in the morning.

Double Edit: Deck was mediocre, in large part, because three of my rares were the bg shock land, and the golgari promo dude. My one rare outside guild pack I managed to use was uw oring.

Triple edit: to be clear. I pulled three gb shock lands, the regular at golg promo guy, and uw oring. My guild rare was... Whatever the worst guild rare for sol is. I'm so tied final update.

The 3 Overgrown Tombs should just about pay for your entry fee, and when you throw the Dentention Sphere in there as well it looks like you could make a profit on the prerelease just from what you opened.

Didn't open any money, had a mono-4 drop B/G deck splashing white off Gatecreeper Vine and Axebane Guardian for Collective Blessing, went 1/1 drop because it took 4 hours to get those 2 rounds done, tournament was ran like a nightmare. I gotta stop going to that damn store...

Went 6-0 (12-1 i games) and won my prerelease. I played Selesnaya deck with a black splash for Vraska and some removal. The card that impressed me the most was the white +1/+0 first strike and lifelink for W. It was just ridiculously good, especially when people don't play around it.

Played Selesnya and went 5-1. I had Trostani and Wayfaring Temple but only like 4 cards which could actually make tokens QQ. I opened Martial Law and Righteous Authority so those went in the deck since they're amazing. Also opened several Arrests, Knightly Valor and Ethereal Armour so I ended up making a weird midrange deck with lots of enchantments and auras with a big weakness to bounce spells. But once I hit my five mana things were really good. Although a lot of my games went super close to time so I never got time to eat and stuff.

What I don't like too much about RtR Sealed is that you're kinda forced to splash a fair amount unless you open a lot of good packs. Even with the Guild Promo pack I was really short on playables so I had to splash both Blue and Red. Luckily I had three Izzet Guildgates and a few Gatekeeper Vines to fix my manabase. But I still had games where I was struggling to play my cards from some of the double mana or specific colour combinations. (Although using Izzet Guildmage to copy Selenya Charm was one of the most satisfying plays I made the entire day lol)

Selesnya's individual card power feels really good. When you're in top-deck mode, you tend to get cards which at least give you board presence or break stalled boards. But if you can't get any token making cards then all the populate cards lose a lot of value. If you have tokens though, Populate makes a lot of your cards two-for-ones which is sweet. Selenya might be a bit weak in Limited if you can't get the right cards but if you get it rolling it's really strong. It works nicely spalshing into Azorius or Golgari too. Azorius lets you durdle around until you hit your bombs, while Golgari lets you play a mid-range deck that just beats people. While I didn't get it, Elecutors gets a special mention since all you have to do is stall the board with tokens and detain and just wait to win lol.

Rakdos is probably the scariest guild if people crack all the right on-colour cards. Turn 1 2/2 from Unleash into turn 2+3 unleash into turn 4 Desecration Demon/Rakdos is one of the sickest lines of plays I saw at the Prerelease. With the reliance on Gates for mana fixing (delaying you) and the lack of strong early drops in most decks, you just need to have answers in your first few turns or you just lose. My games against Rakdos were really brutal where we both ended up racing or it was a question about whether I had enough removal to stabilise and finally hit my bombs. (Thank goodness for top-deck Martial Law @_@)

I also just want to mention that Skymark Roc straight up destroys a lot of Golgari.

Overall not a bad day. Thanks to the packs I won I cracked a Jace (yay), an RB Shockland and a few other decent rares (like Cyclonic Rift).

I wouldn't play multiple, but I found it one of the better combat tricks I had. Most people only seemed to pay attention when you have more than one mana open due to the charms.

I played two of them and would probably have played a third if i had it. That said i had 17 creatures in my deck, most in the 2 or 3 drop slot.

Bah i went 3-2 as GBW, heavily using the populate mechanic. I only lost to white blue flying aggro, heavy detain decks were too slow and i was able to out populate that but flying aggro the clock was too quick for me to go off using things like pack rat+ selensya guildmage or w.e. My deck used as much removal as it could get i think i ran like 6 creature removal.
