I haven't spent more than 100 dollars on any given deck. Those who do are incredibly impulsive and deserve to be in a JG Wentworth commercial. The next deck I am going to play isn't breaking my bank either. Just learn to trade and if you draft keep an eye out for value cards. It also helps if you win more than you lose in drafts. You would have some merit if there was a card like Jace 2 in the format, but there isn't. In fact the last multi-format all-star wasn't even a mythic, Snapcaster Mage is sitting at 18 right now. So slow down. I will say this though, new players never value lands. I snapped up 4 of all the Scars lands in draft (including a few foils) when I got back into the game. Post-Zendikar rotation I flipped some for cards I needed some cards for Solar Flare and later on for other things. I have a play set (with some extras) of all the Innistrad lands and will be flipping them accordingly as needed. There are just cards people will always trade for or need. For those who don't know. + Show Spoiler +
I don't think it's fair to call us "scrubs." I can see the guys point, maybe not coming into a forum cursing about it but I see his point as a newer player who started from nothing, thinking "Is this game really worth it?!" But it was, and is, so I went with it. But just because some people prefer to budget doesn't change the fact that the card prices can be a little silly. Also, snap is 25 on SCG and ALL my local shops so idk where you found it for 18, which leads to the point, to own 4 in your deck is 100 bucks, the amount you stay under to build your ENTIRE deck.
I see your point, too, though. No one is forcing you to play Snap, Geist, or hunt. You can easily win games without the best cards, I guess I just took offense to the scrub comment. x_x

Judicator, I know what you are saying. I have placed first and second all month and last with my Wb tokens list but it I`m just saying it would be nice if I had the money to get things like 3 of the new Jace and such. Or 3 bonfires. I just got back in 6 months ago and do not have a job. That`s all.

If you're paying $25 for snapcasters then you are over paying, even when I purchased my play set with cash I still only paid like $20 a card.

I am using scrubs in the literal sense. If you want to take it in a negative sense, go for it.
Yes, I played Flare into UB. Didn't drop more than 100. Traded for 4 Snaps (have 6 total at this point), traded for 2 Lilys using only cards I had gotten from drafting all of Scars block. Remember those lands? Flipped the GWs for Snaps, flipped the Copperlines before States for the Lilys. Kept the Seachromes and Darkslicks for obvious reasons and flipped those when Esper Delver for money. Not hard. I played the most expensive deck in all of the previous standard rotation and didn't spend more than 100 dollars exclusive to my decks (I have spent more than that drafting for sure, but I am drafting regardless). I spent around 30 for 2 Karns. Never cracked a Bonfire/Huntmaster/Caverns/Geist/Lily/Sorin/Tamiyo in draft. Hard life. Never went out of my way to draft for specific cards I needed for standard.
Does not having Bonfire suck? Yes. Does it mean I need to play Bonfire? No. Would it be nice to play what I want? Sure. But how do you know you need those 3 Jaces? Or 3 Bonfires? Not having a job part definitely sucks, but to say you can't play the deck you want because of mythics is a joke.
You guys really need to watch prices (it's not hard, once a week will do) and sell high when you can. You guys are too caught up in the actual vendor prices when that really has little bearing in how you collect your cards.
Edit:
Yes, I have no idea who's still selling Snaps for 25, its like easy sub 20 right now and the last time I checked before the full RtR spoilers, some were selling for 18.

Thanks for info! I have noticed some really odd price drops and rises since I started and am never quite sure wtf is going on lol. But I imagine it has to do with competitive decks and rotation? Either way I love your advice about trading and picking up cards wisely through drafting, which I love to do.

I buy from tcg player but my LGS uses starcity prices.

In the Magic community, you're pretty much considered a "scrub" if you've tried your hand at competitive magic and haven't been successful on the Pro Tour(PT) circuit or don't qualify for it regularly. A person who just plays casually for fun and doesn't enter tournaments is a "casual" player. It's used a general term, some people who "scrub out" of PTs use the term like a badge of honor. Some people use it in a derogatory sense. Most times, it's used in a general sense (but I understand your reaction to being generalized as a "scrub").
It's akin to calling someone a "platinum player". To some people, it's an accomplishment and they wear it as a badge of honor. It can also be used in a derogatory manner, and also as a generalization. At the end of the day a platinum player is still a platinum player. A scrub in magic is a scrub in magic.
I've competed in several PTs and haven't done particularly well in any, and I consider myself a scrub. I feel I'm above average (in terms of skill) at magic, but still a scrub.

If I wanted to be mean, I would have used "jank".

Judicator is not mean guys, he is just brutally, unmercifully honest. :D

No tall stores give credit for winning :/
Edit: Should say Not all... I kind of like it this way, though.

How tall is tall?
And no, I am not Idra.

You darn well remind me of him. Play primarily to win, knowledgeable of the game, fairly honest, rather harsh.... Well, your online posts have less of the cursing and more of the punctuation at least, lol.
I thought you resembled the IdrA of the TL Magic community, not saying you were IdrA himself, necessarily.

So i decided to do a cubedraft, went mono red. And then this happened
I can't even remember the last time i drew 8 lands in a row, probably because i'd already have lost before that.
I think it's like 1/15000 that there are 8 lands on the top of the deck, and it's quite nice to have it happen with a crusher in play!

Judicator, you kept your deck below 100 dollars when the swords and mirran crusader were dominating the format? And you won frequently? UB beats was really fucking powerful not that long ago (spectral, geist, angelic destiny, sword of FaF/WaP) and that deck was well over 100 dollars (forgot to include the duals in that).
It's definitely possible to make a good- even competitive- deck for under 100 dollars, but I'd say that budget limits the range of decks you can play. Joo's right that you can play for under 100 and to assume you can't is pretty ignorant, but I'd defend the guy by saying it's kinda closed minded on your part- there are some pod lists and control lists that are over 100 dollars to play. (or basically any deck that runs bonfire)

I never said my deck was under 100 dollars. I never spent over 100 dollars on any of my decks once Zendikar rotated (didn't play paper standard when Zendikar was still in rotation) and I played Flare into UB into Esper tapout control into UB (once M13 was released). Not over 100 dollars specifically for any of those decks combined.
I am not saying if you are building from scratch, and you need the deck the next day, you won't drop over 100 (more like over 200). I am saying that if you ever need to spend 100 dollars on the spot then you are probably a very impulsive individual.
I already said how I managed to play all of those decks (roughly) but like I said, I bought/traded/drafted Scars lands when they were like 4 or 5 bucks a piece (like low 20s total). Then flipped those at their high points (for example - GW Humans, Wolf Run) for cards I needed for States to play Flare. Tested the shit out of UB before I actually built it, but I had enough of the pieces from Flare to not spend a shit ton (around 30-40). Moved all of my Tempered/Inkmoths/Etched Champion when CFB ran through the field at Worlds for some Esper (namely Gideon who has been completely ignored thus far) pieces (I was already moving away from UB by this point before Costas won with his "traditional" Delver list in Baltimore, because anyone who tested the deck at this point knew Esper Delver can NOT beat UB...ever...so Geist was the only route and our natural response was to splash W).
This was the point where I decided to just stop playing paper in Standard because I neither owned the Geists to play Delver (although I knew people who would lend me a Delver list should I ever need to), nor did I own the Sword set up (just 1 Sword of War and Peace). When M13 came out, UB was well positioned again to beat Delver (the meta made Essence Scatter so much better without sacking the ramp matchup aka no need for Lilys) and finally realigning the draw engine (I was beginning to do this already before switching to Esper), I went back into finish out the standard rotation running UB. Notice I never went over 100 with any of the cards, but nor was I under time pressure to obtain any given card (which is what I suspect most of the people in the thread are in) with the exception of States to pick up the 2 Lilys. I did make a judgement call to not play when Delver was at its height (partly because of AVR/M13 partly because I wasn't sure if Wizards was going to move to ban certain cards).
Edit:
That turned out a lot longer than intended. I should point out that I draft almost weekly unless the format was absolutely ass...aka AVR-AVR-AVR which is Magic morse code for giant turd.
|
I'm going over all the cards and I'm going to have to choose Selesnya at prerelease. It looks like it could be absolutely out of hand.
Edit: Maybe I'm just getting caught up on the centuar at common, but I don't think it's unrealistic to think of pulling 2 or even 3 of them.
