Why is it more expensive that Merfolk Looter? Rummaging (what they called red looting) is worse the looting, the stats are the same, so why make the red version worse?
Red's not the color that draws much, so the cards it gets that draw are lesser in power than the blue, which is the best at that.

I'm looking to maybe move into some sort of blue/Black zombie deck after getting pounded by a deck with a fair amount of protection from black. I need removal, some sort of replacement for lastwrithe. Duress should help replace despise and distress, mind rot might also help. Can I get some card suggestions?
Wait till you see the Return to Ravanica spoilers before making a call. You might have to be playing BUG or BG Zombies given that Golgari is in the first set. I don't think Rakdos is Zombie-iirc.

Rakdos typically does demons, seeing as Rakdos himself is a demon.
Jarad is a zombie, though, so we're going to see plenty of B/G zombies in RtR, scavenge could be cool too

TWoo has a nice and concise article written about deck building over at Channelfireball. Given that rotation is in 2 months (less than), it's a good place for new players and old players to read.
I don't agree with his self-testing only on MWS, but the only real reason I play on MWS is to get a feel for the decks flying under the radar at any given moment. That was invaluable for me when I was testing/updating UB control and more so when Esper control became the norm once Zombies became an actual deck and Swords hit 50 bucks. However, Woo doesn't play/make those kind of decks, his signature decks are more proactive than reactive so I can see where he's coming from.
In any case, great read for any one wondering on how to actually build a deck rather than piloting someone else's or tweaking an existing list.

Twoo is a dumbfuck
not trolling, listening to him would get you nowhere 90% of the time, and backwards 10% of the time.

Because you're known for building great decks and crushing his pathetic attempts 90% of the time.
Get fucking real. You haven't even read the article, and I can confirm it's quite good for people looking to learn how to build decks. I learned some shit.

Apparently not reading either. He doesn't tell you how to build his decks. He tells you how most brewers build their decks anyways. Conley does roughly the same things. Others don't actually build their decks, a lot of PT players don't, they just test and tweak.
TWoo's brews has had enough success for him to be considered a top deck builder...Living End...Poison in Modern...RobotRun in standard...Angel's Rise in block...Mono Green ramp in Standard again. He's had a hand in building all of those decks either identifying key pieces or constructing the deck from scratch.
That's not something you just say TWoo is a dumbfuck to. Do yourself a favor and go actually read the article before assuming shit and making yourself look like a complete ass.

So, I haven't played magic in around 11 years, but I was bored one night when there was no SC streamers I wanted to watch and I saw a MTGO stream. MTG being an old flame, that was only snuffed out by Everquest, naturally intrigued me. After watching a few drafts I was totally interested again. I'm looking for people to play with, and lots of advice, so if you're interested in playing with an newb add me on MTGO, account name is the same as it is here. I have a bunch of questions, so you can just tell me to fuck off if you want.

Just ask away in this thread, most people will respond. We might have different opinions on certain things though.

Well I'd mostly like to know if it's possible to play a constructed standard deck that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars. I had some other questions too, but I can't remember all of them at the moment, so I'll just ask them as they come up I suppose.

Here is a deck that recently went 4-0 in an online tournament for $85: http://www.mtgo-stats.com/decks/21592 (There are lots of other decks on the site, all with their prices) Variations of this deck were also very successful at the World Magic Cup last weekend. It's definitely capable of winning and it's as cheap as you are going to get for this standard season.
|
Don't invest in that deck right now, rotation happens in a little more than a month. I suggest you just draft until rotation happens.
|
Just after rotation is the best time to go all in on standard because all of your cards will remain legal for the longest time.

Regarding the discussion about Travis Woo, I had a question. How do you guys define a player worth listening too? I get the feeling that most players have this funny bias against guys who do consistently well in SCG tournaments. I guess, what I'm getting at is, what defines "good" to you?

Honestly, I listen to everyone that has a decent amount of data and makes logical sense. Then I practice and make my own theories based on theirs.

Well, I'm also not very familiar with the competitive scene of Magic. So I have no idea who Travis Woo is, what are his accomplishments? I should say that I like his writing style for a website like that. It's very personable and easy to read.

There are at least 2 that I know of: Green summer is the newest one and it top 8'd a couple of SCG opens, then Living End which top 8'd a couple of GPs as well. Both are still players in the meta.

I haven't played this game in quite a while but I'm passable and my friends who stuck with it are now "good" (for example my bff took second at a gp last month and is one step from the gravy train), so I know of what I speak.
The correct answer is not to listen to people who are writing articles. It's to play a lot, network, play tons of limited, and get to know people who are smart and good. You will get better, it'll generate card hookups which is going to save you an incredible amount of money in the long run, and as the average quality of your associates goes up the odds they can just ship you a good list before an event will become very high.
The truth is deckbuilding is way overrated, because it's very marketable and very addictive. However just being good at playing the game is orders of magnitude more significant. Get some friends who will bear as much of the burden of thinking about constructed as possible and focus your attention on limited because that's what will make you skilled.
So as far as people to listen to on the internet... if you know the basics, nobody. Let other people listen to them. Articles aren't helpful, whether the author is good or not, because they can only make you better at metagaming which has marginal value.
(All this goes out the window if you don't understand the game. New players should read a lot, but ease up once they hit the tournament level.)

So three of the new mechanics for Return to Ravnica are known:
Selesnya - + Show Spoiler +Populate (To populate, put a token onto the battlefield that's a copy of a creature token you control.) Golgari - + Show Spoiler +Scavenge X (X, Exile this card from your graveyard: Put a number of +1/+1 counters equal to this card's power on target creature. Scavenge only as a sorcery.) ![[image loading]](http://media.wizards.com/images/magic/daily/features/feat210_dregmangler_9o1t3wycvq_en.jpg) Izzet - + Show Spoiler +Overload X (You may cast this spell for it's overload cost. If you do change it's text by replacing all instances of "target" with "each") ![[image loading]](http://media.wizards.com/images/magic/daily/features/feat210_streetspasm_4563lkoj35_en.jpg)
The info for Golgari and Izzet comes from the Golgari vs Izzet duel decks coming soon. Check it here http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/feature/210. Some tasty reprints in these decks.
There will also be a new cycle of Guildmages and each guild is getting it's own charm.
Spoiler season's about to heat up again.
