If he wants to play often and with different people, then making the rounds at the card shops in his area is not for him, and pauper isn't played at all in paper as it's not a relevant format. Honestly, you're probably best off in Block Constructed, it's by far the cheapest format and it's online so you can play on MTGO. If you end up liking drafting and the like, it gets you the cards for your deck at the same time, so it's a bonus. The best part about block constructed is that all decks are by definition Standard legal, so you can play them in Standard, they just won't usually be quite as good as normal Standard decks.

Both storm decks (Temporal Fissure and Grapeshot/Warrens) are at least 20. Invigorates have evidently gone down from their epic price at 4 tickets to about ~1.50, so infect isn't that bad. WW is at least 10. Mono blue is at least 20 thanks to the counterspells (Forbid especially) being expensive. For a format supposedly all commons, those are absurd prices. You can pick up an entire UG mill yourself deck for something like 5 and that includes rares. Burning Vengeance is less without Snapcasters. Any deck without Garruk/Liliana/Snapcaster is probably going to be well under 10 for Block Constructed, and honestly those 3 cards aren't as good in it as they are out of it. Sly: You still need Koth who is still up at 20 something tickets (I'm not restarting MTGO to get a solid number)

The burn spells are cheap. Even Hero of Oxid Ridge is cheap in price. You can get a lot of mileage for 100 bucks. rdw was ok for me here although I didn't buy the hero or any planeswalkers anyways

No but, obviously, Koth better, but if you're on a budget, you can get away with it. You won't win as much, obviously, but it isn't like you're going to plummet to a 30% win percentage.

I'm a complete newbie aside from playing the oooold PC game, but I would like to humor myself that at least I can think on a half-retarded level. And yes I thought about drafting, but I want to wait and see how my financial situation turns out this semester.

Ya pretty much. Cards like leyline/crypt/relic are good because they actually remove the cards from the graveyard. Cage just keeps them there until you get something to kill/bounce it. It's shit.

Snapcaster, GSZ, Birthing Pod, Burning Vengeance gets shut down by this. We'll see in a month if the change is gonna be good or we'll get flooded by UW delvers and tokens :D

Is there any deck out there that would somewhat fit, isn't a complete loser and is either some kind of mindfuck (a la blue deck) or cuteish like some pixie/faerie or whatever deck I've seen a while ago? I saw some such in green or blue plus black I think a year ago maybe? Or something very multicoloured and possibly 'deep' as in highly strategical/requires precise and a lot of (or at least more) thinking to pull of? TBH just scout for cards, have some fun with the pre-made decks online and see what suits you. I honestly can't say what you would find as fun, but playing something lulzy shouldn't be too expensive. Out of curiosity, who are you in MTG? Or SC? No shitting/trolling/provoking etc, I'm just genuinely curious cos Judicator doesn't tell me much.
