Monks are so ridiculous...definitely my favorite class in BG2. 3% magic resistance per level after level 14...hit level 30 in TOB, magic does 10% to you. Not to mention your THACO, hits per round, and AC are off the charts (with no armor). Unfortunately they're a bit of a pain to level until you hit about 18 or so.

EDIT: AND your run speed is 15% faster than everyone else's...and you're resistant to poison and disease...and you get a special ability that can instantaneously kill mobs...need I go on o.O

Monks are pretty bad compared to other classes >_>

They can't get Improved Haste, meaning their attacks/round is shit, and their fists only get up to +3 weapons, which can't even damage some of the toughest enemies in the game (they require +4).

Fighter/Mage and Cleric/Ranger are a million times better.

Anyone gets improved haste from the Ring of Gaxx.

Not sure how you'd take out Kangaxx though :p

just cast improved haste on your main, get everyone in the back of the room, morph into the reaper and watch the show. It works for everyone, you just have to hope you will take him down before dying.

if you install the tales of the sword coast expansion pack that may give you more experience areas

if i remember you should try and lure one of the baddies at a time for the final boss , also spam the monster summoning wands they are ridiculously good in BG1

I lured him out of his henchmen and ganged up on him, no big deal. Just haste, and buff away your party with every spell you have.

If you are playing vanilla BG without mods the easiest solution is to summon a bunch of monsters to surround him and use ranged weapons + spells.

If you are playing with BGT and the "summon limit" i guess your best chance is to lure him and his buddies one by one and to use all the buffs available, mass potions + spells and all your bests bolts/arrows.

Nah. It's a +2 AC and Save ring, cumulative with other bonus item, and with regenration and other stuff.

No hast on it as far as I can remember.

I need help. I'm at level 3 of durlag's tower and you're supposed to be teleported to some kind of chess board when you've defeated 4 areas. It didn't happen however, and I haven't got a save to retry unless I replay like 10 hours of the game. Is there some way of fix or cheat to be able to finish durlag's tower anyway?

There is a teleport cheat
If you are using BGT it is something like that ...

1. Open your Baldurs Gate 2 Directory
2. Copy and make a backup of the file ''baldur.ini''
3. Edit the origional file ''baldur.ini'' with notepad
4. In this file you will see a ''[Program Options]'' heading.
5. Enter a new line under the heading and type or cpy in ''Debug Mode=1''
6. Start up the game and while playing press [Ctrl] + [Space] at the same time. This will bring up a console where you can type stuff into.
7. In the console that should now be visible, type ''CLUAConsole:EnableCheatKeys()'' (without the '''').
8. Now the cheat keys should work properly. and you can enter other commands such as

CLUAConsole:ExploreArea()

selected characters to cursor position (or nearest place if cursor location is not accessible):
Ctrl-J

But tbh i think that you have missed something

I didn't miss anything, and by reading other threads it seems like the problem isn't all that uncommon.

But that cheat thingy, how do I know which area is the chessboard? ctrl+j just teleports me around the level...

2) MoveToArea("[AR#]") Almost as useful as Ctrl-J. Use this cheat code in the BGII console to instantly switch maps by replacing [AR#] with the area number of the map you want to teleport to. This can sometimes do strange things to your game if you teleport yourself to locations you haven't visited manually yet or shouldn't have access to, and any cutscenes or other events that were supposed to occur en route or upon arrival may get skipped or occur at strange times, so use this cheat with caution. It's best for switching back and forth between Athkatla quadrants you've already visited as you complete city quests, saving yourself pointless travel time without losing any events of interest. You can learn the AR# of any location by hitting the X key, but here are the key ones: AR0300: Docks District AR0400: Slums District AR0500: Bridge District AR0700: Waukeens Promenade AR0800: Graveyard District AR0900: Temple District AR1000: Government District AR1100: Umar Hills AR1200: Windspear Hills AR1300: De'arnise Hold AR1400: Temple Ruins AR2000: Trademeet. The maps for De'arnise Hold, the Temple Ruins, and Trademeet all change as you do things there--if, for example, you make De'Arnise Hold your stronghold, the AR# for that map will change to AR1304. If you want a full list of Baldur's Gate map locations (including dungeons, houses, dream sequences, before-and-after maps, and so forth) there's on

Yep sry about ctrl+j it only works on the same map

Ah ok thanks, I got it now... The only problem now is that all the chess pieces insta-attack me, I have literally no chance. I don't remember much from my last playthrough but I don't think it's supposed to be like that.

Ok, nevermind, I killed them with hax. I think I can proceed normally now, even though the chess room was just an unpleasant brick wall.

i just installed this for the first time also. what kind of character should I begin with if I'm not too interested in fiddling around with character customization, but still want to have challenging combat, but still want to mainly enjoy the story without thinking about combat all the time? if that makes sense

Easiest class to use are melee fighters ( fighters / barbs / pala / rangers etc ... ) but you can also try a mage or a priest. A bit more complicated but more enjoyable overall.

If you are starting from BG1 i don't think you should start with a mage because they are too weak at level 1, but if you are just playing BG2 it is not a problem.

Combat isn't that slow unless you play tactics or some extreme difficulty mod. When you have set some basic AI scripts to your characters most battles except boss fights can be done almost automatically. Play something like Ranger or Paladin if you don't want to fiddle around with spells n shit too much.

Shouldn't be that big of a problem cause the game tells you what stats are essential for the character class you've chosen.

The challenge lies more on how you do your fights. You have to make decisions about the positioning of your companions and about the spells and actions you have to execute at the right time.

I've played BG with a Monk class. It gets pretty powerful at higher levels. Deals a lot of damage then and has great resistance abilities against weapons and magic. And you dont have to make decisions about weapons and armour.

yeah that could be true

as a more experienced player I tried something different than the usuall heavy-fighter-tank main char playstyle

and believe me playing monk is quite entertaining, alone the speed and the kung-fu fighting style is worth it

It's kinda fine. No problem with equipement, at least.

Plus NPCs are so ridiculously powerful inBG2 that PC's class doesn't really change much, contrarily to BG1 where PC is basically always the only really valuable character (well, except for Edwin ^^)
