And saving equipment when you'll find better ones in an hour is just really silly, right? Not sure why you'd think it's "idiotic" to craft early in the game. Sure you could get more xp later doing it, but you can also craft gear for yourself as you level up, not to mention that whole aspect of the game can be fun for people. I have no space problems crafting thanks to the collectibles feature. My bags consist of weapons I want to use and the rest tends to stay empty as I'm constantly selling or salvaging stuff. The only problem I can see right now with crafting is that I would have more money if I just sold everything, so I'm hoping once the AH becomes available I'll be able to counteract that some by selling off some materials I don't need.

Because temporary equipment doesn't really matter... I guess some people will find that fun, I dnno, I've always hated crafting useless things that I spend an hour to get and then need to replace 15 minutes later

I've ended up salvaging a lot of my blue crafted stuff and selling my green ones.

Better gear is better, and the turn around for replacing it is typically closer to a number of hours than 15 minutes. I'd rather have something I know is good waiting for me than just hoping to get lucky. Of course, when the AH is fixed, a lot of this may be moot.

I have tried a few things out, so here are my experiences. I have tried staff + sceptre/(pistol | torch) and right now am using greatsword + sword/pistol. My utility skills are focused on either creating illusions or making them better; right now I'm using the +illusion health signet, phantasmal defender, and either decoy or phantasmal disenchanter. With my staff build I was focusing on condition damage and in particular on stacking confusion. I'd try to use either the pistol illusion or the torch illusion plus the sceptre third skill (this skill is really good, and the sceptre counter is good, but the autoattack is bad) to stack confusion and then also shatter clones to add more. At this point I was also using Mirror Images to make more clones so I could shatter them. It has kind of low damage output for pve though. Maybe a better way to go with this is to be some kind of support mesmer and not try to do a ton of damage and instead use utility skills like feedback or null field. Recently I switched to greatsword + sword/pistol, and this does a lot more damage up-front. I am still using illusions a lot, but now when I shatter them it is almost exclusively the f3 and f4 shatter skills (they are effectively the same in a 1v1 fight except for the cooldown; obviously f3 is better when it's multiple people fighting one enemy and f4 if it's multiple enemies fighting you). I summon both the greatsword 4 and pistol illusions and then use the sword illusion and teleport in and use the sword 2 skill for a lot of damage up-front, then you can do a few things. You can shatter illusions and autoattack a few times during the safety; you can roll back out and swap to greatsword or use utility skills; or you can try to stun the enemy out of its next attack as you wait for cooldowns and let your illusions beat them up. (edit: in pvp dodging an attack with distortion is much better than stopping it with daze because of cooldowns, but this isn't a big deal in pve) With the greatsword you have ranged damage so there's not really any problem with just standing back and autoattacking, it seems to have pretty good sustained damage. Illusions seem pretty strong to me since if your enemy doesn't attack them they stay around and do a lot of damage, and if they do then you're not the one getting attacked and if you have good reaction time you can shatter them or something. I think I want to try dual-sword plus sceptre/pistol also, but I don't actually have two swords on my character right now so I haven't tried it in a while. Using mantras seems interesting so maybe when I get more skill points I will try them out more, it seems like that could go well with a main-hand sword build since you can use mantra of distraction to stay safe while you autoattack. But I have not tried this. On a kind-of-related note the mesmer downed skills seem really good for pve since almost always your enemy will attack your illusion instead of you.

And saving equipment when you'll find better ones in an hour is just really silly, right? It may be sub-optimal experience to craft early and craft often, but I'd hardly call it "idiotic." There's very little reason to race to level 80 in this game, and as a result there's little reason to try to maximize your experience gain. I craft because I can use the food/weapons I create as upgrades, as well as positioning myself to be able to make some money from the trade house as soon as it opens. I also save all the green items I get, whether or not I can use them, in case there is a market for them once the trade house opens. If there isn't, I can salvage/vendor them, but I'd rather not dispose of them until I know for sure. Between crafting materials that I can't deposit as collectibles and random other stuff I am saving, inventory space is a huge issue.

Agreed I can't even deposit crafting materials anymore and I'm using my bank space now to hold stuff. Really need the TP to come online now.
