That's The Bioware Formula™. All their games post-NWN follow the same pattern: intro sequence -> 3-4 unconnected sidequests that can be completed in any order -> final sequence. Mass Effect 2 thankfully added some more main storyline parts throughout the game, but still essentially followed the formula. I put about 40 hours into Dragon Age before giving up on it because I was so bored with the side quests and the gameplay.

Yeah, I'm getting tired of their "find the Star Maps" crap. It might actually have started with NWN. They just divided NWN into multiple chapters but each chapter was almost the same "find the Star Maps" crap, too.

I, for one, am glad that they're cutting down the PC origins. That way we can probably expect more in the way of controlling the storyline, and a decent job on the PC voicings. There are only so many variables you can afford to put in to a single player game.

New footage of DA2 (not worth a new thread I suppose). A 50min+ video of gameplay and dev talk.
Shows how great this game is going to be imo. The new fighting animations are amazing, and i'm loving the new abilities and build system. Just as tactical as the previous games. As long as the story is solid this game will be amazing.

I never knew this either. Figures though, as I preferred both Torment and IWD games to Baldur's Gate. =P
Meh, I thought the original DA:O was a step in the right direction (or better said, a step back from the Mass Effect brand of "rpgs"). It wasn't a very good game, but I could at least respect it for trying to bring back the genre. Doesn't look like it will be the case with the sequel, though.
Oh well.

Great stuff, looking forward to the cross class combo system, sounds awesome to toy around with. Do hope that the game is better tuned on higher difficulties.

One can only hope, Bioware has never been known for making their games very hard, even on the hardest difficulty level.
With that said does anyone know if they will allow modding in DA2?

pc gamer gave it an editor's choice reward, which means a rating of at least 90%.

Man I can't wait for this. I've already got the Signature Edition (silver foil packaging, free day 1 dlc coupon (seriously EA?), soundtrack and 4 exclusive in game items) pre-ordered so hopefully it'll arrive on the release day. I'm bursting with anticipation!

I'm hoping the combat system is a lot more interesting. DA:O's combat was made fun mostly by the animations.
* Single target damage spells cost as much mana as AOE spells and did similar or even less damage than an AOE version (to a single target!) * Both Stamina and Mana would drain instantly, with almost no regeneration, leaving all of your guys auto-attacking before you knew it. * Some spells like Fireball, Cone of Cold and Mana Clash were absurdly overpowered, while others were horrendously bad. * You could spam all of your character's attribute points into a single stat and do fine. * Each 'tree' was only 4 levels deep, so you could get all the best stuff near the start of the game. * You could pick two specializations, and they were all just another 4 skills, which ruins a lot of the fun of picking a specialization and building a unique characters when your Berserker is just a Warrior plus a couple of extra skills. * Far too much overlap between the Rogue and Warrior classes * Spending skill points, stamina and time using a lot of active skills was often a lot worse than just letting your character do an auto-attack (particularly with 2H weapons)
And so on and so forth. I just installed it again this weekend and I'm going to play through it again in prep for DA2, but I can't help but feel compelled to put on my modding cap and do a massive overhaul of the whole thing myself as I run from one AOE+autoattack fest to the next.
DA:O was a great game, but the combat was a pretty big let down. Here's hoping they've taken the time to improve on that aspect of the game in the same way they made ME 2's combat much more enjoyable than ME1's.

I pre-ordered it. This game better have more than six goddamn hotkeys.

At first I was very disappointed they took them out, also the ability to play as an elf or dwarf, but then again I guess if the time they would have spent developing those stories if that time was put into fleshing out the main story, it's all good with me. Personally I hope they expand or in the very least not touch the tactics screen from DA:O I loved setting that up and watching the AI take over.

DA:O was a nice RPG. At the time I enjoyed playing it, immersion was great and the combat was fun (though freaking easy even on nightmare mode) but thinking back at it now I must say the story was incredible dull compared to, say, the Witcher. I prefer much more prefer the Elder Scrolls type of RPG. I won't pick it up on release, maybe when it has dropped it's price, first gonna play The Witcher 2!

Not going to happen, considering the developers will keep consoles in mind.
Just mod the game man. Mods make everything better. I am close to surpassing the 50 mod mark for New Vegas and Oblivion. Overhaul mods ftw.
I will approach DA 2 very very cautiously. Origin was a huge disappointment for me. That game felt extremely linear and boring to me.

I bought DA for the xbox, but I'm not sure if that was the best idea. Anyone who played both the xbox and pc version tell me which one they thought was better?
|
I put 50 hours into DA:O in the first week and a half and haven't touched it since. It was fun but it got repititve pretty fast. Eitehr way I'm excited for the 2nd one. DA is probably the closest we'll ever get to Baldurs Gate 3.
|
I liked the first DA and the expansion but I don't know, half the game is dialogue and the story was not that interesting to justify spending half the time watching awkward npc interactions. Combat was boring as shit tbh, mix between real time and tactical combat is great and everything but it just didnt work. Also, my biggest gripe with Bioware right now, their RPGs have no customization, I think I finished the game swapping my weapon twice? I feel like they could do more about the gameplay than spending time on lame sex scenes -.-
|
After the first one being hyped so much, and also getting rave reviews by almost everyone despite being a terrible game, i'm not going to get very excited for this. Maybe they learned from their mistakes... but i still don't know if i trust anything about the DA franchise.
|
DA:O is a pretty good game. They didn't reinvent the wheel with the story and the devs knew it. It was more focused on the interaction with your partymembers - though it was really a bit dull with all the available presents -,the staging of the story "chosen one beats big bad dude" and Biowares obvious blood-fetish. Whether it is Sarevok/Irenicus in BG or the living ship-thing in ME, the big picture is always the same (like in... nearly every other story-based game?). More important than the story is how it is presented imo. And if DA2 is stylish and good designed mechanical-wise, I won't mind a story that has been told a dozen times.
