Will comment on quality later.
As a note, I have very little patience on replaying games, even several years after I last played them. I remember all the steps too well, and if it's a good story, it'll stick with me for a while.

I played a mage, and I think that the change in spell graphics are spectacular. However, they make the visuals a bit to...chaotic, similar to watching a fullscale sc2 battle on ultra. Or maybe I'm just too used to playing SC2 on low?

I'm not going to comment on characters because in this area you can only tell so much from a demo, but from the characters we've seen, none of them seem remotely interesting. The Game looks like they took a game made in 2004 and gave it new shaders. Facial animations are about on par with Half Life 2, a 2004 release. Gameplay was basically the same with a consolized limited topdown perspective, but combat was never Biowares strong suit anyway and the demo was 95% combat. I'd imagine that the game will follow the suit.

I don't care about combat, its an RPG, but the Dialogue is better? Rofl. Your brother dies and you have ONE LINE OF DIALOG responding to this event. They go something like this. "He was a good man" "Oh" "Get over it" First, combat matters to most people. Most of the game is going to be combat. A good example of how to make a good game would be mass effect 2, which combined both. Also, I meant to say for the most part, the options are streamlined, in origins, it felt unfocused. It's impossible to judge the overall excellence of the dialog from a 30 minute demo. I'm not going to comment on characters because in this area you can only tell so much from a demo, but from the characters we've seen, none of them seem remotely interesting. We definitely know very little about them thus far. So little that judging them seems kind of insane. The Game looks like they took a game made in 2004 and gave it new shaders. Facial animations are about on par with Half Life 2, a 2004 release. I was running at high with a few other settings put up and it looks amazing. Especially animations from spells, etc. The facial animations are decent, I wont say they are amazing but its not that bad. Gameplay was basically the same with a consolized limited topdown perspective, but combat was never Biowares strong suit anyway and the demo was 95% combat. I'd imagine that the game will follow the suit. The combat is so much better. It basically reminds me of the jump from ME 1 to ME 2. ME 1 was a great game, but its combat was most certainly lacking. ME 2 had some of the best combat in recent gaming, period. It was a bit easy but very well done. DA:O felt clunky and terrible, slow and weak. DA 2 so far feels fluid and responsive. I have no claim as to how the combat will eventually pan out, but so far its good. It feels strictly better then origins. I'm really confused on the criticism.

It seems like people will always disagree on which aspects of Bioware's games are the best/worst and most/least important. Personally, I enjoyed the combat in this demo, but I can completely see where a lot of the criticisms regarding it (and it's implications for the full game) are coming from. But it's mostly just going to require a lot of us just accepting that this wont be DA:O and will, in fact, be much further from a 'traditional' RPG than that was.

It's better then Origins. Except the combat now lacks depth and any semblance of tactics. No friendly fire? Characters that suddenly zip the last 10ft into combat? Inability to control space via spells? A camera that's frustrating to use while orchestrating a fight? Check all the above. It also lacks the hard-hitting, meaty feel of combat from the original. Some of that is animation, some of it is sound (why is my spell-caster spasming about while shooting fire that sounds like lasers from the staff?). Dialog was flatter and more limited and I dislike the lighting direction compared to the original which managed to use light quite well in its environments. Demos are meant to grab people and make them love your game. This one showed a large divergence from DA:O. DA:O was mechanically a good "spiritual successor" to the Baldur's Gate series which I still place at the top of my RPG list. This is very much removed from that lineage. For what it's worth I enjoyed ME2's combat and inventory much more than ME1.

The interface, which was previously an abomination, has been overhauled. The graphics have gone from hideous to mediocre. Character customization is still deep, and the Mass Effect style of dialog is the best the industry has to offer. As for the setting, any complaints you have about DA2 apply equally to DA:O. The setting is not inspired by, but rather stolen outright from George R. R. Martin. If the first game was not proof enough that David Gaider is a shitty writer, go pick up either of the Dragon Age novels and get back to me after three chapters. Dragon Age is about kicking ass and completing quests. I'm looking forward to doing both on March 8th.

The graphics did seem, almost worst than DA:O but, maybe thats just the limited settings in the demo coming out there. Either way it was hard to tell, as far as the conversation goes, seemed basically the same as DA:O was considering this was just the demo I wasn't expecting like a huge amount of the story to be divulged here so I expected a pretty thin amount of conversation going into it. The only thing I definitely wasn't happy about was the camera not being able to zoom out into "tactical mode" like it did in DA:O, hopefully thats just a demo thing.

But maybe I'll get acustomed to that. My main problem with the combat though is, no thought involved. Stamina/Mana didnt seem to run out, so it was basically a "Just smash 1-5 whenever something comes of cooldown". Sure - I'll probably have to save the mezz / cc for important enemies on higher difficulties, but all the other abilities are a no-brainer. No "Can I use X now, or wont I have enough stam/mana for Y, which I'll need in 10sec?". Sure DAO was bad on the other end of the spectrum (you never had stamina for anything, if you had 2sustainables active) - but a "mixture" would seem better. Maybe on higher character levels when having more access to more abilities. And dont get me started on friendly fire (hoping it will be on on Nightmare). Dialog - I cannot understand the criticizm. You guys seem to have missed the "investigate" button, or else I cannot see you only having 3 dialog options ![]() So it's more like 4-6 options. Like Kotor, DAO & Co. And of course the demo is designed to be more "action focused", because they want to get some guys over from the action genre. If it is the same for the whole game - remains to be seen (maybe I'll eat my words in a couple of weeks^^). About the brother dialog - we dont know the relationship between the lead & the brother. + Show Spoiler + The brother was fighting at Ostagar. The lead too? If not, when, where, were they seperated? Did they part in peace? Did the mainchar like the brother? Was the brother a douche? Halfbrother? Adopted? I think I can easily construct a background where the "limited" dialog option at his death would be appropriate. Graphics / Chardesign is ok. Not groundbreaking, but who expects something like that from a RPG? And I take 50h+ of gameplay (I hope it's so much^^) over a 5hour graphic fest everyday. Edit: About the DLC - apart from "Initial pre-order before January 11th: Extra character, Extra missions" it's just some items. So who honestly gives a damn about those? I can easily live with not having all those DLC items. Sure - they might get more DLC later on (like in DAO), but if that's worth the price, why not?

I mean the special attacks had a lot more crunch and oomph behind them. Bashing someone's face in with the shield and knocking them off their feet was a great experience. The shield slam sending people flying in the demo? Borderline parody.

But despite the badness of the 1% of the level design shown, the horrible level design, aesthetic, animation, male Hawke voice actor... I am actually surprised with the combat system. I defintely disagree with anyone who nicknames this as Dragon Effect 2. It's nerfed slightly, especially with the mage, but the expanded rogue, warrior and cross classing should fill the gap. Maybe I'll think about buying the complete DLC version of DAII during next years Steam sale.
