DA:O Collect x of x take it to x for reward x. Now do it again.
Beautifully written :D DA2 seems like a rushed game to me. I hope the reason they turn every one of their game series into "cinematic experiences" is because they have a real, challenging and tactical RPG being worked on behind the scenes.
Sounds like Bioware is turning into Square-Enix post-FF6. The first cinematic experience game (FF7) was kinda good but that was the beginning of their decreasing quality.

Played the demo as Rogue and Warrior, seems pretty awesome so far. Combat feels dynamic and fluid, especially with the rogue. From what I've played, I will buy the game.
Also, Square enix's quality of post-FF7 games has only increased, especially with X, XII and XIII. I'll agree XIV was a flop tho xD

I won't have access to the demo for at least a couple weeks, so to those that have played it...
How hard is it? The difficulty on the first game was pitifully low, even on Nightmare, if you were one of the pausing typing of players. I liked the first 5 or so hours since you actually had to strategize & formulate a decent plan but afterwards you just became a walking bulldozer and nothing really mattered at all.
Does the game still have this feel, almost forcing you to play it as a hack&slash just to draw some enjoyment out of the combat portions?

If that was bait, consider it successful.

downloading demo now... extremely excited i LOVED DAO... will post my opinion once i've played it

demo is like a mediocre action game, with decent story telling.
hope the full game is better. da1 was amazing.

Just started the demo now. Seems like they've just copy-pasted the plot template from ME2, which may or may not be a bad thing, depending on how exactly it handles.
I wonder if they think we don't notice things like that.

Demo difficulty set on normal, there are times when you're facing quite a few enemies and you need to pause and strategize or party will die.
Graphically it seems very similar to DA1, however there are few extra options like ambient occlusion, etc. Yea and the models of hairstyles is still a joke, nothing can rival hair of FF xD.
If that was bait, consider it successful.
Yea it was my personal opinion and I knew it would bait a lot of responses too ^^

I don't know about this game... I'm at the running away part of the mission - I tabbed and the game crashed <.<
I'm disappointed by what I've seen. The combat is way too fast, things move like lightning bolts and you barely get time to see what's happening. I think they took the 'faster combat' a little too far.
The graphic for the character seems okay. The demo won't allow me to put them on high, so I'll keep judgement for later. The background sceneries seems a bit blurry though. I mean, really blurry. It doesn't feel real.
I don't like the character dialogue choices. You have three choice, but it doesn't give you enough insight on what Hawke will say.
It might be just me, but when I'm out of combat and moving the character around with the mouse, it doesn't feel quite normal. I'm not exactly sure why yet, though.

Wow, that demo was bad. Our worst fears were all realised.
Big block of negatives that I'm not going to format. Horrible paraphrasing dialogue wheel; bad textures; bad lighting; Lothering (or just outside) looks awful; Darkspawn look awful; Ogres look awful; Aveline looks awful; the blood looks awful; the Hawke voice actor who is butchering my speech options sounds too smarmey/posh; they've adopted the up is good, down is bad and middle is inbetween on the dialogue wheel to so being a bad guy just requires selecting the bottom most option every time; AI is moronic; tactics were still over simplified and pause and play will most likely be required for early nightmare runs as you will have to command everything yourself; unskippable cutscenes, bad character models, everyone has brown eyes and taunt animation is borked (how am I supposed to know how many were taunted?).
At least the UI is nice, not in theme with the setting and more akin to some futuristic setting, but it's nice.

Wow! Cnt event get the demo working past the "customization". Well, what I have seen is pretty bad. The characters look plain bad. I chose a male warrior, and than the female mage had like boods the size of her head, wtf. The looks like painted onto the head and the textures are rubbish. Could go on, but why care?

Some graphical options: -High quality motion blur -Ambient Occlusion -DirectX11 Rendering -Depth of field

So just looking at the trailer, it appears this game is less focused on interaction/storytelling and more on combat? Is that what the demo suggests as well?
I was pretty impressed with DA:O to be honest. There were a few dull moments, but overall I thought the way they told the story was enjoyable, even if the story itself was generic/silly.

The game is not bad, but the role playing elements in the demo were, simply put, not present. The way the story is told in the demo doesn't make any sense - it's told in a nice way, but it's nonsensical and hard to follow (especially the switch from the first part to the second is just plain bad). Combat is insanely fast and looks very nice, but becomes rather repetitive after the first 5 minutes. You can't zoom out to cover much of the battlefield, it's impossible to clearly see what is going on with other party members without pausing and clicking around and adjusting the camera view, which quickily becomes a bother. The game was set on normal difficulty by default, which apparently means your character is indestructible - throughout the whole demo all I had to do was to pause whenever needed in order not to lose on any combat time on issuing commands - I never had to control any of the other party members manually either - despite their dumb AI. The game is extremely easy (based on the demo). Graphics-wise it is an improvement over the first Dragon Age, no doubt, but it still lacking - the entire first location is horrendously uglym the second one not so much. Facial expressions are nonexistant. Dialogue isn't very satisfying - some of the answers don't fit the outcome predicted (most "funny" responses were not funny at all, for example). On the other hand, there wasn't enough dialogue to form an opinion on. Inventory system was blocked during the demo (!), so were most of the skill trees. From what I've seen, the interface has been improved, which is a good thing, although the journal is still lacking in some aspects. I didn't like the fact that the TAB didn't make the healthbars of ALL enemies to appear.
I know it might come off all negative, but it seems like a solid game, it's really hard to tell exatcly - the demo was very, very short. Nevertheless, it doesn't seem like my kind of an RPG, I will not buy this game for sure. I will download it via torrent to try it out some more and maybe I'll change my mind later on, who knows... (and that way I won't feel ripped off by not having the 500 different DLC's already out there).
Based on the demo, 5/10 as an RPG, 8/10 as an action game.

I can't really put my finger on why, but the way combat works reminds me of the last Batman game.
|
Hm, reading this I'm a little concerned. So basically, combat doesn't seem to really hold up as a strategic/rpg-style/NWN/BG-era combat? It's more "console-crowd", like we feared...? Tell me it aint so...
|
I think that was obvious from all the previews. Every preview I've read stated that Bioware wanted this to be more of an action game rather than an RPG.

The graphics and dialogue I'd assume have also been changed to suit the console-crowd alongside the combat.
It really is a dilemma, this console style combat, bright and crisp but low in detail graphics and general layout would have easily been suited for a sequel to Jade Empire, but the contrast between Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2 is too much.
Mass Effect had a similar contrast to Mass Effect 2, but in that case it arguably worked out for it. For Dragon Age, it has not.
Poor BioWare, they have lost their RPG sense and we will now all look to the Witcher 2 or Elder Scrolls V for out lost RPG experience.
|
I really love the Mass Effect series - but I do have it down as basically an on-rails shooter/ChooseYourOwnAdventure(is that the right title?)-style action game. I wanted it to be something different initially; but the setting and story won me over in the end even though it wasn't "BG in space".
But with Dragon Age it was close enough to old-style rpg gaming to sort of lead me on. Very sad if DA2 despite their protestations is more of a ME experience. I expect it will still be fun - they know their stuff - but at heart I'm a sucker for a real roleplaying/strategy-combat experience, and these pre-determined heros with set personas, and Street Fighter-style combat or what have you aren't the same.
I keep on playing the first like 2 hours of Witcher 1 and then giving up. I guess I should keep going? (For some reason I find it hard to feel I "own" the lead character but maybe that's just me not getting far enough into the story.)

Witcher might not be for everyone. It definitely has it's faults. However, I'd keep trying to play it. To be honest i horribly regretted buying The Witcher for the first like 6 hours into it... then for some reason i started loving it. It seems to be something that's happened to alot of people who've played it... don't ask me why.
DA2 seems whacky. It's like a mix of DA:O and diablo. I don't really like the look of it at all either, but of course i cant judge from just a quick demo.
