Due to the popularity of TheAntz's pokemon topic and the interest in the challenge posted in it, instead of hijacking his topic I decided to create a new one. Here you can post about your adventures.
Information about the challenge can be found here. http://www.nuzlocke.com/?page_id=2 Basically, the idea is to run through a pokemon game with these set of rules:
1. Catch the first Pokemon you encounter in each route/cave/whatever and nothing else. If you fail to catch it, too bad, continue onwards. 2. If you Pokemon faints, consider it dead and release it.
These are the 2 main rules of the challenge but many people decide to add some of their own rules to add more challenge or fun or whatever. Another common rule people use is no healing items, or no duplicate pokemon. Also, a lot of people make it a rule to nickname all their pokemon so that you feel it a lot more when you lose them.
I'm currently running through FireRed using this set of rules: 1. If a pokemon faints, you must release it as soon as possible. 2. You can ONLY catch the first pokemon you encounter in a route/cave/town/area (You get the idea). If you defeat the first pokemon you see, tough shit, you get nothing from this area. 3. Obviously if you run out of pokemon, you must start again. 4. Potions, healing items of any kind infact, are DISALLOWED.
+ Show Spoiler [ my FireRed Party and Graveyard] + My Current Party: Lvl 42 Vaporeon Lvl 37 Pidgeot Lvl 35 Nidoking Lvl 33 Lapras Lvl 24 Oddish
Graveyard: Lvl 5 Caterpie (1 shotted by critical hit rattata) Lvl 5 Rattata (1 shotted by critical hit rattata, these things are vicious) Lvl 12 Butterfree (1 shotted by geodude's rock throw) Lvl 22 Meowth (died to rival's kadabra) Lvl 27 Mankey (died to team rocket member's golbat wing attack wtf) Lvl 28 Exeggcutor (1 shotted by weezing self-destruct) Lvl 39 Venusaur (killed by rival's gyarados in silph co) Lvl 23 Gyarados (died to tri attack from random bird trainer's doduo =/ )

I'm thinking of running the nuzlocke challenge for HG/SS if I can get it to work after I finish fire red... It would probably make the story a HELL of a lot more interesting too :D

I like the idea of having to release a pokemon if it dies, but rules like no potions, only the first pokemon for a section just seams silly to me, those just take the fun out of the game. Instead of saying only the first pokemon in each section, why not pick 6 types and they have to be covered in your party, something like that

I'm doing a similar challenge in FR myself.
But I'm testing some other rules, while less confusing, might be just as difficult (possibly more so)
+ Show Spoiler [ my challenge] +1- If your pokermans dies, release it. If you lose a battle, release all of them. 2- No buying ANY items from ANY shop for ANY REASON. 3- Battle mode set to SET, not SHIFT. 4- No running from any battles. Period. 5- Saving is only allowed as you shut down your system. (aka, Going for Moltres? You cannot save right before... you will have limited pokeballs and 1 chance at him,) I think this will get real interesting, because: -You can only FIND pokeballs. -You can only FIND status healing. -You cannot buy anything for Celadon Dept Store! -Elite four? Without stocking up on Items prior to running it? With no revives? Have fun with that.
Good luck with your challenge! I think HG/SS will be interesting... because.... well.... have you thought about how your gonna be Red at the end? rofl.
|
Well the point of only catching the 1st pokemon in each section is so that you can't just pick the strongest pokemon and it's up to chance what you can get. It's also interesting because it forces you to use pokemon that you normally wouldn't. Also the no potions rule isn't one of the main rules, just a rule I'm using for myself.
|
Dude no, you forgot the most important rule of Nuzlocke: give every pokemon you catch a unique nickname.
Oh you included this already.
YEAH I TOTALLY FAIL THIS CHALLENGE EVERY TIME AND I RAGE HARD.
|
Just wondering, how difficult is this (for those who have tried it)? I might try a less intense version where you can catch any pokemon but no catching the same one again if it dies.

So can you use pokecenters?

Yes the main rules allows use of pokecenters. Some more hardcore players might add their own personal rule not to use pokecenters but I can't imagine doing that D=

If this is directed at me, actually one of the FIRST things I thought about while writing the thread is the ending. I've talked about it with a few people who i've asked (begged) to help me out, and they all think its an epic ending, so you wont be disappointed

This sounds like a lot of fun. But what happens if you need to backtrack? Do you mark down each route as "completed" already as you pass through it, so that if you need walk back for all the mini-quests or whatnot you can't catch another Pokemon from that area?

You have to catch the 1st pokemon that you encounter. If you didn't encounter a pokemon in that area then you can come back and try to catch 1. An example would be fishing in Vermillion town. Usually the 1st time you pass through that town you won't encounter any pokemon since there's no grass. The only pokemon you can encounter is in the water so you can come back when you get a rod and try to catch 1.
If you already encountered a pokemon in an area, whether you caught it or failed to catch it, you cannot catch another pokemon in that area.

im gonna do this. starting w/ fire red atm
my rules : pokemon faints = dead battle style = set no healing items allowed (can buy pokeballs only) first pokemon in each area = catch, no others no saving or dodging nicknames!

How can you not use pokecenters? It's not like you can buy ethers/elixirs... unless you can only use non-pokecenter "pokecenters" >_>;;

I don't know, apparently someone completed a game without pokecenters abusing surf/strength HM and move deleter. I have no idea how he could sustain it in the earlier stages of the game though, especially since he can't replace his pokemon because of the 1st rule.
Like I said, I can't imagine doing it =)

I started with Squirtle, caught me a cute little Rattata, and then had it die to a critical hit from a Pidgey, went west of Viridian hoping for a Nidoran but found another Rattata, which died to poison from a Weedle that I killed with a critical Bubble instead of catching it.
Goddamn. This may require more thought than previously expected.

It occurs to me you could just Daycare one guy and walk up and down for like three days then win the game lol

Well of course. You could also grind your pokemon to a high level and get the same result but then what would be the point of the challenge? Most people try to do it with as little grinding as possible. I'm not sure if it's possible to win without any grinding although someone might prove me wrong.

It seems like D/P would be very difficult, especially if you get unlucky with Pokemon (a lot of good ones aren't even available until after you beat the elite four). Beating Cynthia in particular would be pretty much impossible, since she spams Full Restores like nobody's business and has a team that wasn't assembled by a complete scrub (aka everyone else).
