From my limited play experience, the engine is far inferior to d3, but the itemization, talent tree, currency system and such are all very progressive and unique. Tons of customization and depth in all the ways D3 is missing... However, D3 is a much better looking game and the physics and gameplay are much more consistent and smooth. Interesting angle, that makes it much more interesting. As a long time Angband fan, I might live with worse graphics... Almost every rpg in the history of gaming that uses hp and mana has used something like this at some point. And as Apple sues everyone that looks at them the wrong way, I asked my question ^^

The first 2-3 months everyone will be all over it, then they'll get sick of things not being as smooth and they'll go back do D3 or quit. You clearly haven't played PoE. Balance is very clear. Just look at the top 10 ladder right now. The only class it's missing is witch/duelist. Nobody is going back to D3. Not when PoE is going to have hardcore races and a world pvp league.

what we basically need is the combination of the two. since this is not realistic, i wonder which game has more potential to become what i really want from a modern action rpg. and the answer has to be d3, simply because the "core" of d3 is coded very well, its just the content that is lacking. but this content can be added quite easily later on via patches or expansions, while PoE will have a really hard time getting rid of its fundamental technical issues.

PoE has great item system and customization as well as a much better quest system and endgame content - but the game is clunky and very nonsmooth. what we basically need is the combination of the two. since this is not realistic, i wonder which game has more potential to become what i really want from a modern action rpg. and the answer has to be d3, simply because the "core" of d3 is coded very well, its just the content that is lacking. but this content can be added quite easily later on via patches or expansions, while PoE will have a really hard time getting rid of its fundamental technical issues. Except everyone agrees the core of d3 is the issue. The fact that the core of the game revolves around two stats. Your main stat and vitality. Good luck changing that. There is literally no way to fix that issue without releasing an xpac/pissing off the entire player base who has spent hours/real money on gear.

Doesn't everyone already know that as soon as the first xpac hits all of their gear will be obsolete?

I agree the graphics look terrible, but then people still play games like Dwarf Kingdom and Nethack so I guess for some gamers graphics aren't everything. I like the idea of some of POE's features- HC characters going to SC when they die, maps you can find in game that have particular challenges and rewards and temporary ladder races. These are all things that the D3 devs should look into adding to D3.

Meh. The graphics are functional, and aesthetically it's a lot closer to the old diablo games than diablo 3 is itself. For an industry primarily fed off nostalgia, maybe that was a wise choice.

I played for 30 minutes and just didn't have any desire to go on, it felt so clunky. Awesome skill tree or not, it just didn't feel fun. Maybe you need to progress farther in the game and get into the theory crafting of builds to really enjoy it. Meh.I agree with the comments above regarding D3 having a solid core of code that gives the game a fluid feel, but it needs more diversity and content.

Some community manager guy pretty much confirmed that they won't have major content patches at all (that stuff is saved for expansions). The patches in D3 vanilla will all be stuff that isn't all too complex to implement.
