Is it the great lore? The linear story-telling path? The fact that you can only be up to a party of 8? Those are big tells that have Diablo jump off the MMO wagon, but I know there's more...
Help me out?
I'm going to say that only having a party of eight people makes it hard to have a "Massively Multiplayer" anything.

I hope my brand new Sandy Bridge hardware is my ticket to a shiny beta key.

I am signed up and have the window open to receive today's conference call @ 1:30PST.
Option A) If I can figure out how to directly stream my audio into the teamliquid teamspeak, then we could all listen in through my computer. If someone knows how, then please PM me.
Option B) Otherwise, I have a professional-quality recording microphone and I could funnel the audio through my speakers and into the mic, but I would need everyone else to be quiet during the recording or they will pick up on the microphone too.
Option C) I could listen to the cast on my headphones, and relay the important info over the course of the call. Additionally, I could create a post with the important bullet points.

Yeah, a persistant world, with thousands of people running around, is a pretty big component to an actual MMO. I'm reminded of when Hellgate: London tried to call itself an MMO. Sure, there were a lot of people playing simultaneously, but it takes a lot more than that to generate the feeling that you're in a living, breathing world.
The simple act of being able to ask your friend where he is, and then run over to the same spot and say hi, is what makes an MMO feel more real.
|
I'll check back on this when I get back from work, at midnight -_-
Never made it into any Blizzard beta (should they announce it today). Have a friend who works for a decent game studio under the activision banner so they do (should) get free beta keys, maybe I'll be able to snag one from him but I suspect they'll hold onto them unlike their sc2 keys.
Still play a lot of D2HC up to this day, just forced to keep sessions shorter since the mindless clicking is finger numbing, and the game is not so new and shiny anymore.
I wouldnt compare Diablo to an MMO. The gear grind and character customization is similar yes (just like in any rpg), but the limitations in gameplay arent. You dont need to sit for 5hours, 3-4 days a week with 19 "strangers" to beat the game. It can without a doubt be as big (if not bigger) of a timesink though.

I hope my weak, old device can get me in
|
So why exactly is it that the speculation is that this is going to be beta invites?
|
Sorry to burst your bubble guys, but there won't be a beta announcement today.
Murphy's law, I invoke thee to shame me! Here's hoping that I eat these damn words.

You may get an invite just because they want to see if your computer can handle it! :D
On that note, make sure that you have your Beta Profile set in your Bnet accounts.

@amoeba:For sc2 beta started 8 days after the announcement, feb 9th was the call, and feb 18th beta started(or somewhere around those dates).
Lets hope my i7 and oldish graphics card can get me in :p, otherwise I'll have to get it by farming twitter again for beta keys (thanks starfeeder for my sc2 key )

History. With a projected release date around the end of this year, its about time to announce the beta so they can get some testing done before release (they usually announce them weeks or even months before they actually start).

Fuckkkkk, I cant join vent while Im in class. Someone keep me updated.

That's in October and REAAAALLY cutting it close if they want it out before Christmas. Not that its not impossible. D3 could easily slip past Christmas and come out this time next year.
