The computer is just as bad as the computer in StarCraft. Everyone decent doesn't get killed once by the "super hard hack mode" bot.
The bots could have been much harder, maybe they updated them in one of their patches, the cpm bots are pretty hard, even if they don't run the map correctly they can just aimbot you. Quakelive bots have been bad however, dunno why is that, seeing they had the collaboration of the cpm creator.

THey still didn't port stuff directly from CPMA, creating new stuff instead. The bots were too heavy for my computer (you'd be surprised), anyway.

This! I need to know.
I believe the only way is to join an empty game and tell the friend to join it too. However I've heard rumors that there will be a service in the future allowing you to rent your own private server for a small fee in which you can password protect/have full control over.
so.. I'm guessing: server-hogging or server-renting. Please correct that if it's wrong or add more ways.

This is right. Currently there are no private servers as of yet (id has had plans for it for a long time, hopefully they are coming around QuakeCon next month.)
Just make sure you add each other to your friends list, join a server and have your friend follow you. Usually if someone else joins while you are playing you can tell them that you are just playing with a friend and they will leave...usually
There's a huuuuuge patch coming out at some point in the near future, probably around the time of quakecon. Summarizing what we know about it:
- Freeze tag mode is now in. Never played it, but my understanding is that you have two teams. When you kill somebody instead of dying they freeze - by standing near a frozen teammate you can thaw them and restore them to life. First team to get entirely frozen loses.
- Website interface has been revamped.
- TWENTY-SEVEN new maps, some q3 ports but many will be new to everyone.
- Tweaks to existing maps
- Game will be moving to a subscription model. There will be three teirs: free, paid, and extra-paid. Free will essentially be a demo version since you will only be able to play on the maps that currently exist. What comes with second and third level accounts is unknown. One area of concern: you are supposed to buy your subscription annually.
As I posted elsewhere:
I just don't know how I feel about this. There are three concerns for me as a potential customer:
- How much it costs. If it's only like three bucks per month, sure, I'm on board. I don't like that they're denying maps to people who play free but I'll live with it.
- The fact the subscription is 'annual'. How can I possibly pay for a full year, I have no assurance they aren't going to just pull the plug a few months in and there goes my money.
- The difference between the second and third level accounts. I'm REALLY worried about what features are going to be available to 'pro' account subscribers that won't be to everyone else.
I don't care if free users can join servers with pay maps or not, the effect is going to be the same either way - if you want to play the new maps consistently, you'll have to cough up.

Well I have been struggling to find opponents to play on e.g. Vertical Vengence on the Europe servers until now. Now let's say there's only 10-20% people able to play on that map. I'm not sure exactly if there's any of the most frequently played Q3 maps missing in the pool right now, but if it's not a duel map I daresay you'll have a hard time finding players to play on it anyways.
The way I view it, either the paid base of players is going to be larger than the current number of players, or it's gonna get shut down. I remember them mentioning somewhere they were going to advertise the game heavily once it got out of beta, really promote it. As far as I know it has zero advertising right now. So their might be a lot more players.
I've never heard anything official stating that the maps are meant only for the premium\pro subscribed players so unless I missed something, this is a assumption. Hopefully a false one, too, because it could as well kill the community. And I'd expect id to know and thus not do this.
After being down for a day, QUAKE LIVE players missing their online fragging fix can return to action later today — as the game has officially exited beta! In addition to the ‘Standard’ free-to-play version, in a press release today, we’ve announced ‘Premium’ and ‘Pro’ subscriptions — adding new maps, game modes, and plenty more. Details below…
The Premium Subscription, which can be purchased for $1.99 per month, billed annually, includes:
* Access to 20 QUAKE LIVE Premium only maps at launch with more to come. Premium maps are a combination of brand new maps and frequently requested community favorites from previous QUAKE games such as Aerowalk, Theater of Pain, Japanese Castles, and Realm of Steel Rats; * An all new ‘Freeze Tag’ game mode; * Exclusive premium level awards; * Create your own clan and join up to five separate clans; * Custom QUAKE LIVE profile wallpaper; and * Match statistics stored for six months.
The Pro Subscription, which can be purchased for $3.99 per month, billed annually, includes all of the premium subscription features as well as:
* The ability to start your own game server, specify a server location, determine the game mode and invite who you want to join you; * With the Pro Subscription, you can invite three friends with Standard level memberships to play with you in any Premium level map; * Exclusive pro awards; * Create your own clan and join up to ten separate clans; and * Match statistics stored for 12 months.
The QUAKE LIVE ‘Standard’ version is still free to play and includes friend lists, access to one clan, matchmaking, and stats tracking delivered through a web browser with over 40 arenas and five game modes.
Is anyone having problems trying to login to quake live ? they were performing maintainance and they're up now, but it doesn't accept my password and it's not sending the reset code to my email
by the way, did anybody from here add me to their friends list to see if we can play some duels or FFAs ?

I had that problem in chrome... have you tried firefox?
I love some of the new maps, even the ones that aren't technically new.
- Aerowalk - Battleforged - Phrantic - Deep Inside - Hektik - Japanese Castles
These are the ones I already <3. haven't tried the others, except dismemberment and black cathedral. I like cathedral, not sure how I feel about dismemberment.
