Ok Teamliquid, let's make a compilation of freeware games, for all to see and play when they get bored and don't want to buy anything.
Requirements: 1. Free 2. Awesome (who cares about really bad games?)
Example: Dwarf Fortress
Please try not to post too many games in one post, as to avoid clutter. Also, remember to provide links, screenshots and additional info when available.
Type: Turn based strategy Setting: Fantasy Languages: Available in many languages, ranging from Afrikaans to Zhongwen Single player: Tutorial and multiple campaigns (map editor included) Multi-player: Official servers, private servers, LAN, Hot-Seat Available platforms: Windows, Linux, OS X, (Open)Solaris, AmigaOS4, OS/2, Risc OS, Syllable, iPhone System requirements:
We are not completely certain, but an x86 running at 400 MHz with 128MB RAM should be adequate for versions 1.02 and below. For versions 1.1 and up we recommend a computer with at least 1 GHz and 512 MB RAM if you run KDE or Gnome as Windowmanager (The game itself needs about 100 MB RAM). Slower machines will have trouble scrolling large maps or processing AI turns with many units.
More info:
The Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based strategy game with a fantasy theme.
Build up a great army, gradually turning raw recruits into hardened veterans. In later games, recall your toughest warriors and form a deadly host against whom none can stand! Choose units from a large pool of specialists, and hand-pick a force with the right strengths to fight well on different terrains against all manner of opposition.
Fight to regain the throne of Wesnoth, of which you are the legitimate heir, or use your dread power over the Undead to dominate the land of mortals, or lead your glorious Orcish tribe to victory against the humans who dared despoil your lands Wesnoth has many different sagas waiting to be played out. You can create your own custom units, and write your own scenarios or even full-blown campaigns. You can also challenge your friends or strangers and fight in epic multi-player fantasy battles.
If you ever liked Heroes of Might and Magic series, you're going to love this one.
I like this thread! Time for me to contribute: rRootage
Type: Boss Rush/Bullet Curtain Shump Setting: Space(?) Doesn't really matter. Languages: English, Japanese Single Player Only Various modes of playing the game. Available Platforms: Pretty much Windows only, don't know about mac. Available for iPhone. System Requirements: 6mb free space. It's been out for a while so that it shouldn't be hard to run.
Just a side note, although the game it's free, it's one of those item shop games. Although from personal experience at level ~30 ish, you don't really actually have to buy any of their items to progress.
The game is a huge source of fun at LAN, too bad the online community and the development has been dead for quite a while now. :/ It's still very fun especially as the game is very moddable.
Name Wolfenstein Enemy Territory Type First Person Shooter Screenshot
Probably the best free game I have ever played. You get to choose your class and you battle it out with others. Some of the mods are pretty fun, but I havent played it in a while.
Name: Mechwarrior: Living Legends (in Beta but will be free regardless)
Type: FPS / Sim
Setting: Sci-Fi
Single player: None
Multi-player: Official servers, private servers
System requirements: Fairly steep, it is a mod based of the Crysis engine so if you can run Crysis then you're set.... if not try anyway because the game is amazing.
*Note* The mod is currently and will remain free. However, it requires people to already own Crysis for the mod to work. This game is amazing so it's worth the 10$ Crysis costs now a day and if you're too cheap to buy it there are plenty of cracked options.

Wolf ET is great, do people still play that game? ^.^
Type: DotA-like game play Platform: PC System Requirement
Minimum System Requirements 2 GHz processor 1 GB RAM 750 MB available hard disk space Shader version 2.0 capable video card DirectX 9.0 capable video card Windows XP SP2, Windows Vista SP1, or Windows 7 (Mac OS is currently not supported)
Developed by Guinsoo, the creator of DotA, League of Legends is a great game for those who enjoyed DotA. The game currently has over 50 champions (characters to play as) and more are being introduced on a weekly basis. The artwork is unique and appealing, and the game itself is also very interesting and fun to play.

Technically no, as the creator has you buy the game to play it and i'm pretty sure doesn't endorse playing the game for free as he makes his living. However due to limited availability in the states it is safe to get it online through mega uploads.
Forget Ghosts N Goblins, Ninja Gaiden and Battletoads. This is the hardest game ever. It will tear your sanity away from you and beat you to death with it.
You take the role of The Kid, armed with his trusty gun on his quest to become The Guy thorough a metroidvania style explorable world in which excellent platforming skills required. However, one hit from anything be it enemies/spikes/apples and you die.
The game is about perseverance. You will fail over and over again, but the joy you will get after finally beating a screen/level/boss/the game will be unparalleled. If you liked the difficulty of the classic 2d platformers from the NES era, or if you are a just a masochist, then you will love IWBTG.
For the best explanation of what its like playing IWBTG, watch this video of someone playing through one of the early paths of the game, though they make it look a lot easier than it actually is.
