Ok Teamliquid, let's make a compilation of freeware games, for all to see and play when they get bored and don't want to buy anything.
Requirements: 1. Free 2. Awesome (who cares about really bad games?)
Example: Dwarf Fortress
Please try not to post too many games in one post, as to avoid clutter. Also, remember to provide links, screenshots and additional info when available.
Type: Turn based strategy Setting: Fantasy Languages: Available in many languages, ranging from Afrikaans to Zhongwen Single player: Tutorial and multiple campaigns (map editor included) Multi-player: Official servers, private servers, LAN, Hot-Seat Available platforms: Windows, Linux, OS X, (Open)Solaris, AmigaOS4, OS/2, Risc OS, Syllable, iPhone System requirements:
We are not completely certain, but an x86 running at 400 MHz with 128MB RAM should be adequate for versions 1.02 and below. For versions 1.1 and up we recommend a computer with at least 1 GHz and 512 MB RAM if you run KDE or Gnome as Windowmanager (The game itself needs about 100 MB RAM). Slower machines will have trouble scrolling large maps or processing AI turns with many units.
More info:
The Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based strategy game with a fantasy theme.
Build up a great army, gradually turning raw recruits into hardened veterans. In later games, recall your toughest warriors and form a deadly host against whom none can stand! Choose units from a large pool of specialists, and hand-pick a force with the right strengths to fight well on different terrains against all manner of opposition.
Fight to regain the throne of Wesnoth, of which you are the legitimate heir, or use your dread power over the Undead to dominate the land of mortals, or lead your glorious Orcish tribe to victory against the humans who dared despoil your lands Wesnoth has many different sagas waiting to be played out. You can create your own custom units, and write your own scenarios or even full-blown campaigns. You can also challenge your friends or strangers and fight in epic multi-player fantasy battles.
If you ever liked Heroes of Might and Magic series, you're going to love this one.
I like this thread! Time for me to contribute: rRootage
Type: Boss Rush/Bullet Curtain Shump Setting: Space(?) Doesn't really matter. Languages: English, Japanese Single Player Only Various modes of playing the game. Available Platforms: Pretty much Windows only, don't know about mac. Available for iPhone. System Requirements: 6mb free space. It's been out for a while so that it shouldn't be hard to run.
Just a side note, although the game it's free, it's one of those item shop games. Although from personal experience at level ~30 ish, you don't really actually have to buy any of their items to progress.
The game is a huge source of fun at LAN, too bad the online community and the development has been dead for quite a while now. :/ It's still very fun especially as the game is very moddable.
Name Wolfenstein Enemy Territory Type First Person Shooter Screenshot
Probably the best free game I have ever played. You get to choose your class and you battle it out with others. Some of the mods are pretty fun, but I havent played it in a while.
Name: Mechwarrior: Living Legends (in Beta but will be free regardless)
Type: FPS / Sim
Setting: Sci-Fi
Single player: None
Multi-player: Official servers, private servers
System requirements: Fairly steep, it is a mod based of the Crysis engine so if you can run Crysis then you're set.... if not try anyway because the game is amazing.
*Note* The mod is currently and will remain free. However, it requires people to already own Crysis for the mod to work. This game is amazing so it's worth the 10$ Crysis costs now a day and if you're too cheap to buy it there are plenty of cracked options.

Wolf ET is great, do people still play that game? ^.^
Type: DotA-like game play Platform: PC System Requirement
Minimum System Requirements 2 GHz processor 1 GB RAM 750 MB available hard disk space Shader version 2.0 capable video card DirectX 9.0 capable video card Windows XP SP2, Windows Vista SP1, or Windows 7 (Mac OS is currently not supported)
Developed by Guinsoo, the creator of DotA, League of Legends is a great game for those who enjoyed DotA. The game currently has over 50 champions (characters to play as) and more are being introduced on a weekly basis. The artwork is unique and appealing, and the game itself is also very interesting and fun to play.
On May 31 2010 10:48 illu wrote: Is Touhou considered free?
Technically no, as the creator has you buy the game to play it and i'm pretty sure doesn't endorse playing the game for free as he makes his living. However due to limited availability in the states it is safe to get it online through mega uploads.
Forget Ghosts N Goblins, Ninja Gaiden and Battletoads. This is the hardest game ever. It will tear your sanity away from you and beat you to death with it.
You take the role of The Kid, armed with his trusty gun on his quest to become The Guy thorough a metroidvania style explorable world in which excellent platforming skills required. However, one hit from anything be it enemies/spikes/apples and you die.
The game is about perseverance. You will fail over and over again, but the joy you will get after finally beating a screen/level/boss/the game will be unparalleled. If you liked the difficulty of the classic 2d platformers from the NES era, or if you are a just a masochist, then you will love IWBTG.
For the best explanation of what its like playing IWBTG, watch this video of someone playing through one of the early paths of the game, though they make it look a lot easier than it actually is.
Guardian of Paradise A free, puzzle-based game (a lot like Zelda, but different) made by a Japanese independent developer - I think this game is up there with Cave Story in quality and fun, although it's far less popular. Translated by aeon genesis. More info here: http://agtp.romhack.net/project.php?id=rakuga including instructions on how to download and apply the translation patch.
Please trust me when I say this game is extremely clever. Your character gains 12 elemental powers like flying, fireball, and more over the course of the game, can find items to increase your maximum health, and need to juggle what element you currently hold on to as you can only hold onto one of four elements at a time. A lot of the very neat puzzles center around arranging your elemental use and switching to get past obstacles.
If you like Zelda, you'll love this. It's NOT EXACTLY LIKE ZELDA, but appeals to me the way Zelda does - combat with lil baddies, exploring dungeons, getting new abilities (elemental spirits/powers rather than Zelda items though), big boss fights - it's a DAMN GOOD GAME, and free, like everything else in this thread.
It's one of my top two favorite "indie" games - including both free and for cost - it's that good!

My Contributions:
SINGLE PLAYER Warning Forevever:
CrimsonLand:
MULTIPLAYER Magic WorkStation:
Street Fighter 3 3rd Strike on GGPO:
Also pseudo free games if you are skilled at internets (both are single player puzzle/de games): Plants vs Zombies Luxor 3 (or any of the series I assume).
Ok, I got to say that Nexuiz is one of the best free games (it's a shooter) out there. The graphics are very good which is not always easy to say for free games.
I also love that it is available for both Mac and Windows. In fact the very same set of files plays on a Mac and Windows too. Very convenient. Say I want to play LAN from my mac with a friend on his windows machine? No problem. Just copy the files over and play.
A few of my recommendations are of games that entertained me eons ago.
First there are the remakes of the classic Sierra Entertainment adventure games Quest for Glory II and King's Quest I and II by AGD, and King's Quest III by Infamous Adventures. The plots, puzzles, art, and graphics have all been expanded and updated.
Several other old point-and-click adventure games have been released for free to be used with ScummVM such as the popular cyberpunk game Beneath a Steel Sky.
Lastly, there's the remake of the 1993 game Wing Commander: Privateer, Privateer Gemini Gold, which is an open-ended adventure space trading/combat simulator made with the Vega Strike engine (which itself was influenced by Privateer and is really cool). The Righteous Fire add-on's story is included as well.
Basically, this was a Q3A total conversion, which is now completely free after the Q3 GPL release. It's a mixture of various elements from other FPS: Maps and weapons are modelled realistically, quite like Counter-Strike, while preserving Q3 movement like strafejumping and adding new tricks like walljumping, climbing up ledges etc. There are lots of gamemodes like FFA, TDM, CTF, Bomb Mode (like CS) Team Survivor and more.
I have enjoyed this game for a very long time. As a former CS player, i liked the faster gameplay and bigger emphasis on movement/trickjumping in UrT.

Along with Falcon 4: Allied Force one of the most realistic (control wise) combat flight simulators I've ever played. This is made by fans, so it has some bugs, but it's been a while since I played it and they're still improving it (I hope. The latest version seems to be up since May 2010). FF5 has even slightly better realism than F4:AF (I remember anti-radar missiles (HARM) had more realistic (harder) manipulation in FF5). The manual on its own is a good long reading.
It's not an easy game at all, but the feeling that you get once you finally are able to even start engines, take off, and land, without breaking anything is great Then there is also multiplayer, I know people from FF community fly missions together in formations and stuff quite regularly.

Iji is an action-packed strategic platform shooter with a detailed story, large levels with multiple paths, powerful bosses and lots of secrets. There are alternate gameplay events, dialogues and scenes depending on what you do, a wealth of extras and bonus features, and seven stats to upgrade through a leveling system. Iji herself has superhuman strength and abilities, and can crack Nanotechnology, use her enemies' most devastating weapons against them, and be a pacifist or a killer - the story adapts to how you play.
Engage to Jabberwock is a freeware hybrid shmup from Japanese developer Platine Dispositif. In the game you roam a large, single dungeon in 2d, blasting enemies with various magic spells and collecting items. To describe it as “Bullet Hell Zelda” (Bullet Hellda?) wouldn’t be inaccurate.
Make sure to go to the option menu and change your input to “Keyboard” before you play (the default is “Joystick”). Change the key configuration, also!
Iwanaga is a run-and-gun shooter with lots of bullets and an interesting weapon system. The ice and fire shots have very different properties that make them excel at different situations. As you use one, its power level decreases, making the other more powerful. Download link (also, Vacant Ark is pretty good too)
edit: I have to personally un-recommend the previously-recommended Guardian of Paradise if you're looking for an adventure game with any kind of challenge. I guess if you like modern Zelda it might be a good fit though?
The original site is down, due to copyright claims from Atari Interactive (massive fail there), but there are still many places around the net where you can download it for free.
Type: It's pong. With plasma. Multiplayer & Singleplayer, available for Windows.
Wasnt free but is now - All the Mech Commander games http://mechcommander.org/downloads.html Mech Commander 2 is my favourite, I've replayed it oh so many times. Infact, I'm going to have tor replay it when Sc2 beta is down now =D
Fully customizable mechs, use weapons ranging to small machine gun and flamer arrays, small and large lasers to full on Clan Gauss rifle tech, Long range missles, artillery and my personal favourite - PPC Particle cannons. Use famous mechs ranging from the small Razor back and Raven to the massive Atlas and Blood Asp.
Fun gameplay, Not bad graphics its age is starting to show but still well worth the play. Also has an awesome sound track.
Doesnt like the embeded code apprently so just click the link
I have both on CD from wayback when but havnt been able to play Mech Commander Gold because it wont run on XP 64 >:C If anyone knows of a fix or work around I'd be very appreciative (Compatability doesnt work, it never works for me :/ its almost like it doesnt do anything at all)
Barkley Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden is a comedy RPG set in a post apocalyptic world where basketball is banned. Battles involve Mario-RPG style timing actions, and encounters are avoidable. The soundtrack and humor are definitely the best parts of this game. Barkley Shut up and Jam:Gaiden takes about 4-5 hours of playtime.
awesome thread, hope it stays alive for a long time. I was just wondering, do any of the games in the Tribes series have single player, after months of morrowind and oblivion im in the market for a fun single player fps.

Yes, the newest - Tribes: Vengance has a SP, its pretty good. Where as I believe the other two are pretty much MP only, I know Tribes 2 is MP only or with Bots.
Free online MMO, graphics are not very great, there are some pretty cool spells and a cool CCbot system. I believe there is also a store where real money = game items, exp boots ect.
does anyone else recall someone posting about a 2d (old school graphics) freeware game about a girl in a room or something, and she is able to go around through like portals in a mirror or something like that...?
EDIT:never mind... i found it it's called Yume Nikki, it was on DoctorH's horror thread.
For anyone who loves old school SNES age turn based RPGs, I found this really cool game just today that uses the RPG Maker 2003 engine. It's called Hero's Realm, and it's possibly the greatest game ever created on a RPG Maker platform. It has an absolutely huge world with nearly limitless side quests. Here's a review with the download link at the top.
The Jazz Jackrabbit series was pretty awesome. It is two player (though maybe the first one isn't I don't remember) and my brother and I used to play it quite often when we were younger. It is highly recommended to play it with two people.
The game-play is similar to Earthworm Jim and Mega Man, but the characters and enemies are pretty funny Try it out if you want.
Also, if you go to the xgenstudios website, the games "Fishy" and "Defend your Castle" are very addictive (though the fishy game does have an ending).
On June 01 2010 15:30 TTSA_SBR wrote: wasn't portal freeware until the 25th?
In any case, it's not free now, and we've definitely heard of it.
On a side note, I've also heard of all but one of the 2D games mentioned so far and played over half of them. But I don't think anybody's complaining except me, so I'll let it all slide except for maybe Portal.
Type: Point-and-click horror adventure game Setting: Sci-Fi Languages: English, German (voices, subtitles exist for other langauges I think) Single player: Yes, only Multi-player: None Available platforms: Windows, possibly others - dunno System requirements: Dunno, not high
Studio Trophis' debut public production, the white chamber, is a point and click horror adventure game. Explore a strange environment crafted in luscious 2D. Control a trapped young woman from 3rd person perspective as she solves puzzles and overcomes the twisted obstacles in her path.
A young girl wakes to find herself inside a strange glowing coffin, in a dark room. Who is she? What is this place? Why is she here? As she explores the warped environment she finds herself trapped within, she must search for answers, all of which will lead her closer and closer to the white chamber and the truth it holds.
The game is not very long (I would guess 4-6 hours), but very atmospheric.
Type: Space-sim-adventure game? Setting: Sci-Fi Languages: English - probably others as well but I don't know. Single player: Yes, only Multi-player: None Available platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux, BSD, others... System requirements: Dunno, not high
A complete remake of an old, old, old game called Star Control 2. This is one of the funniest games I've ever played, I think watching the below youtube videos would show the game off much better than I ever could:

This game still technically ISN'T freeware, unfortunately. Also the first one for DOS isn't as well though there is a freeware demo version for both JJ1 and 2.
Now for a contribution:
This database has almost all (over 1000) shmup games in a nice convenient database. The site is kinda buggy since I don't know how frequently it is updated, but it isn't bad.

Jazz Jackrabbit 2 is really freaking amazing, multiplayer up to 8 I think and singleplayer was really fun too. Great game. Another...
Type: Clicking rhythm game Setting: Your computer Languages: English, dunno what else, but there are a lot of Japanese songs on there Single player: Yes Multi-player: Yes, good online system, but you don't directly play with other players - just compete for scores in the same game Available platforms: Windows, iPhone System requirements: 1GHz+ Processor 512mb+ RAM Microsoft .NET Framework (2.0+, 32bit)
BfW is my favorite TBS. I love Civ, but BfW multiplayer is just so much better. Civ singleplayer, however is stronger than BfW. BfW is all about tactics, terrain, and positional strategy. Civ is all about big-picture strategy, tech, and culture.
I have to plug Galcon here: http://www.galcon.com/ It is multiplayer RTS simplified down to it`s barebones Strategy. Very addicting and very fun to play. It`s like Go of RTS. Takes a minute to learn, a lifetime to master.
I played TrackMania a bunch yesterday. Pretty awesome game, which reminds me (not to be too off-topic) - I really like seeing that I'm 1,455,198th in the world out of 3,000,000+. Seeing my ranking within my state is also pretty awesome. Learn a lesson blizzard

You are probably just comparing this to the bnet divisions and the lack of a world ranking system, but I'd just like to point out that trackmania rankings are pretty much meaningless .
I don't want to turn this thread into a TM orgy.. but it's nice to see fellow players . It really is a great game. After I stopped playing BW this is the game that consumed 4 years of my life.
I'd also like to point out to others that the trailer can be a misleading lol. It almost makes the game out to be some type of stunt and unserious/uncompetitive type of game, but I can assure it is not(although there are "freestyle" players and leagues). The game is unrealistic and arcadey, but the racing is real(depending on game mode, finish 1st or win with the best time). Anyway the game is highly competitive at the top.

Glitch is a single player? FPS made by the students at DigiPen! The guys who made portal also studied here so they have a rep of being a high end programming and gaming students.
amazing no one has mentioned it yet, it is by far the most complicated game ever made, it's all in c++, and if it was ever made 3d it would break the best of super computers.
In the devlog he plans on making things receive damage on a cellular level.

First of all, let me begin by stating that this isn't just some sick, disgusting parody of the events in the columbine high school tragedy. It is a social commentary on the conditions that drive these people to do such criminal acts, and to put those that glorified the event to silence.
The game puts you into the perspective of Eric Harris as he and Dylan Klebold carry out their crimes in the form of an RPG, and has you doing things like planting the explosives and murdering the innocent victims. There is something that cannot be explained when you feel as if YOU were the one that planted the explosives, and shot down multiple people. This video game presents a unique perspective that I believe would have been nearly impossible with any other medium.

Robokill is a free game for the first four levels. After that I think some mediashareing sites allow you to download it.
Just finished the first one: titan prime. Every level is like a puzzle. You can't just run in guns ablaze in this top down shooter, you have to plan things out. What will you kill first, what direction will you dodge. Hard game. You die a few times, but it's not frustrating.
There's a lot of customization with four weapon slots. There are many types of enemies. TBH though, I don't know why you guys would want to limit yourselves to free games. Pretty much all pc games can be free.

I hope so. Transport Tycoon is maybe the best business simulation ever and Open Transport Tyoon Deluxe is even better. http://www.openttd.org/en/

After a pretty long time of development a community just released the 1.0 version of their open source project based on the abandoned TT addon Transport Tycoon Deluxe. They have their own graphics and many additional graphic mods. They are constantly adding new content and bugfixes.
This game is really old school. When I tried out open-ttd for the first time I was really shocked about the new features. I really missed big stations, complicated signals and networks, when I played this game at the age of 12.

And you can watch Subspace/Continuum's Hockey League:
The above image sums up the game pretty well. You're a blue dude made of blocks, all the enemies are made of blocks, you punch them into their constituent blocks, avoiding their attempts to punch you into your constituent blocks. And you have more exciting attacks than boring ol' punching. The blocks everyone is standing on are the remains of dead enemies. When the remains pile up high enough that you can walk up and out of the square arena, you've cleared the level... Simple, addictive, clever, fun.

Did that game get any better? I loved AA 1.0/AA 2.0 (played them for like 5 years at least) but this one(AA3) was tremendously bad (barely working) when I played it about a month after release. I got TF2 at about the same time, and well, TF2 won by a lot. But I would love for AA 3 to be good.
Also a question about quake live. Is there somewhere else where people go for games or is it just a pretty small community? I count like 260 people total right now at 6:30 PM in all the public matches I can see, which seems really low for a game that's supposed to be like one of the prime competitive FPS's. I'm having fun though, getting the hang of it. So far I can only get repeated strafe jumping up to high speed going on my own in a practice map, haven't been able to do it in live games.

Can't say just yet, ( havent really played it on a computer that doesnt completely suck yet but i am going to try later today ) But i did read on youtube that there was a patch some time back that appearentely fixed freezings etc
The game I play when I'm bored of/aggravated because of Star Craft(#2 sometimes as well, like right now lol) and Battle for Westnoth is Tribaltrouble.com and Browser(No Download) Sequal!
These are both RTSs that are free to an extent. Tribal Trouble has a free demo(full is $30) while Tribal Trouble2 was slightly consumed by greed(Blizzard, anyone?) and made the company so poor they can't update it anymore and are struggling to keep the games up and running. Tribal Trouble 2 was the second beta I participated in and it has an oddies system that allows you to buy for upgrades to your units you can make and the strength of your tribe.
Tribal Trouble 1 and 2 are set in the time of the vikings invading some natives(Called Natives and in Tribal Trouble 2, Indians)and stealing their golden statues and some chickens.
The system requirements are relatively low(at least for Tribal Trouble 1) and are for Linux, Windows, and Mac
System requirements
800 MHz CPU (1000 MHz or better recommended) 128 MB memory (256 MB or more recommended) 500 MB harddrive space NVIDIA Geforce/Geforce 2 MX, ATI Radeon 7200 or similar graphics card (NVIDIA Geforce 2 Ti or ATI Radeon 7500 or better recommended) with full OpenGL 1.2 support (how to update your drivers) 32 MB video memory (64 MB or better recommended) For multiplayer, a 56 Kb/s modem is required (broadband connection strongly recommended) Windows 2000/XP/Vista, Mac OS X 10.3+ or Linux Windows users, please note that the Java Runtime Environment will be installed.

This game is stupid fast and absolutely awesome, except for the part where it's brutally hard to not get your ass raped.
I played this for 2-3 years and there isn't an FPS out there that I don't think is disgustingly easy anymore other than QL
Quake live is SOOOOOOOO boring..... vanilla physic are so shitty, all the video you posted are CPM physic wich arent in Quake live... and it is a completly different game. If they ever implement CPM physic in Quake live i will play... but not before.
This is the best PC sidescroller i've played, besides maybe Cave Story (also free, mentioned before). The dungeons are randomly generated (using 4 different themes), so every playthough is different. It's also very challenging, in a good way. When you die it's often in a funny manner and entirely your own fault, never due to some game bug.
The game does end, but I've only gotten to the end once or twice, and there are many challenges/secrets beyond simply reaching the end.
Dear lord I miss Q3... The 2k that is usually appended onto my name is a tribute to that game. Really wish I could have had the opportunity to play it competitively back in the day.
I see Enemy Territory is mentioned here, really great game! If someone who still plays alot could direct me to some servers who arent filled with bots, I would greatly appreciate a PM on that matter
Tried Quakelive earlier today, got owned as I have been in 1 person shooters for the last 10 years :D
Does anyone remember a game that was posted on TL some years ago where you were a ball created by an experiment and tried to save the world. It had awesome music and was quite fun.
yes, the orc priest class is basically playing as orc jesus, you can walk on water and random orcs will become your disciples. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup
"Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a free roguelike game of exploration and treasure-hunting in dungeons filled with dangerous and unfriendly monsters in a quest for the mystifyingly fabulous Orb of Zot."
Dungeon crawl is one of my facourite games ever, it takes a little while to get into and forever to actually win just once. There's no story or anything like that, the goal is just to go down the generated dungeon and it's branches, eventually retreiving and exiting with the orb of Zot, a task which took me about 8-10 hours of play on a single character to complete.
The thing is that dying results in the permanent loss of your character, which isn't as bad as it sounds. I have so far made about 800 characters in crawl, and 798 of those have died horribly, and when those 2 guys got out after 10 hours in the dungeon you can bet i was happy. It's really exciting to see how far you can get and challanging areas really feel dangerous and you'll need to be on your toes because you can't just reload to some previous save and charge in again. Infact he only time you'll die to some random BS stuff is on the first few floors when your character is new, when it really doesn't matter because creating a new character will take you between 0.1 and 15 seconds.
Your succes in this game is very much based on correct decision-making, and to make the right decisions you need to know stuff about the game. So if you should really check out:
if you run into something unkown or you just want to know stuff to get you going. For example here's some helpful info on the Tomb, one of the harder branches, from henzell learnDB:
"<jericho89> It's a cake-walk. But the cake is evil, and the filling is hydrochloric acid. And whoever blows out the candles WILL DIE IN SEVEN DAYS."
I stopped playing because it had only 4(or 3?) Maps. I liked it a lot, I never liked any BF-game before, but that was nice because of the skills you had and because tanks were not as good as I think them to be in BF. Playing a ninja was just awesome(a sniper with invisibility and just knifing every single one of those camperbitches) € One thing about Robot Unicorn Attack: It is so good, but it has one downside: I started to like that goddamn background song(Erasure - Always) because I heard it so often and even started to open the game to listen to the song.

An excellent fighting game. Standard moves, blocking while backing from opponents, lifebar etc. It has normal fighting combos but not as much, it has a card system to do special moves with which is pretty unique. It also has air dashes and a bigger focus on ranged attacks than most fighters.
The game has it's own community and a lot of people play online on hamachi everyday. Tournaments often and everything. I'll post more info soon. If you wanna look it up just google Touhou 12.3.
Personally I love the game but I'm just too into Melee right now and kinda lost motivation to play it right now.
Why would you play that when you can play Stepmania? Which is also free.
Becuase it has a clean and crisp player (no I do not need a accuracy setting above perfect jeez), great music, no dl. I hate how everyone from SM and osu! are always saying things like that. While the online website and stats died, it's still a great game. Seconded.
edit: on second thought I can do better than starknights, the link is still up there.
Arcuz, hack and slash exactly the same as diablo 2, except a bit harder at many points. Easy to cheat, like in d2. Takes about as much time as d2 on normal difficulty to finish.
Do not spend money on this game, just do one of the free things to get mochicoins. The only useful items anyways are the high level weapons, and they just make the game easier and faster. Most other items do not help much. Just like in Diablo, you can spend real money to make things easier if you'd like, but the rewards of spending money are far less.

This game is technically not free. The only reason why it could be considered "free" in America is because it's ridiculously hard to get. Sorry about raining on peoples parade but this is technically illegal.

I've been playing a game called bzflag (Battle Zone Capture Flag) for the last 4 or 5 years while avoiding my addiction to starcraft in order to finish college. It's an open-source first person shooter based on the oldschool tank game, battlezone. The engine is very simple, you play as a tank with a limited number of shots per reload and depending on the server you can jump or pick up powerup flags to gain unique abilities. The game has a small, but quite competitive community that I've had a lot of fun with over the years. There is a surprising amount of depth to the game when you strip it down to the bare essentials, 2-3 shots per reload, no superflags and teams of 2-4 players playing ctf. Because the game isn't terribly fast-paced, timing, teamwork, and positioning matter much more than twitch reaction speed at high levels of play. That said there's plenty of twitch gameplay involved in close fights and a certain skill ceiling of shooting and dodging you need to reach to be able to compete. The graphics are pretty barebones, but I've played a half-dozen shooters semi-competitively and always find myself drifting back to bz.
http://fantasticcontraption.com/ Pretty fun free game, not really long but makes you think...if you dont use youtube to cheat. Objective = get the pink ball into the pink square. Either easily or super complicated.
Aurora. Where to start? The most extensive and heavy 4X spreadsheet Ive come across so far. Possibly the most extensive game Ive come across all in all. If youre one of those people that play casually, move along. This game is for true hardcore people that put extreme dedication into what they play and dont care about graphics.
The game practicly lets you do anything you want to. Everything from appointing officers with their personal traits to designing the targeting system on your next cruiser and optimising your mining colonies.
I challange anyone that like this kind of extensive spreadsheets to try it. Be aware that it will most likely take you several days until you even can have a decent game going! Again, its not a game for anyone.
I highly recommend Captain Forever by Farbs who also did ROM CHECK FAIL, both of which are must plays.
Captain Forever:
Asteroids style game where you are able to use the parts gained from your down opponents in a pseudo-upgrade cycle. ROM CHECK FAIL:
A quick and dirty arcade game. The goal is to collect a number of coins to get to the next level, however the game changes every few seconds and both the player and the enemies change to that of different classic games. My first level involved me using Mario to stomp on asteroids for instance.
Other non-Farbs related games: Spelunky Shown before in this thread. I started playing this last year, there is not a time when I haven't thought of starting up another game.YOU MUST PLAY THIS GAME.

Turn-based WWII dogfight simulator, if the Germans had giant floating fortresses. Each turn involves planning the movement of your planes and trying to take down opponents. Very strategic, hence why I suck at it.

Each muscle can be set to contract, extend, hold, or relax. The goal of the game is to get as many points as possible by hitting the opponent. If a linb is hit hard enough, it can be dismembered or fractured. You can also lose through disqualification. If any part of your ragdoll's body (other than feet and hands) touches the ground, that person loses.

My favourite free game used to be Gunster, but after a lot of Hackers ruined the game for everyone else ijji took it off their game roster. You can still play the Japanese version Gunstrike but it's too much effort
I always liked Urban Terror, its like a free Counterstrike, a realistic FPS with a great mapping community.
I'll try not to mention any terribad grindy asian MMO F2P games.
I believe Savage 2 is free now. Like Savage 1, it's a game that tries to combine MMO, FPS, and RTS elements into one big clusterfuck. I actually brought the game during a steam sale and ended up never playing it because my gaming laptop died on me and then the game went free (people who brought the game might get some advantages, not sure what though) like a month later.
Phantasy Star Online's server was taken down by sega a few years back, but theres private servers running that are pretty well runned. Their servers are even compatible with gamecube/Dreamcast versions of the game and any PC/laptop should be able to run it (even initegrated graphics). Google "Phantasy Star Blue Burst" (apparently that's what the latest official PC version was called).
Honorable mention to Alien Swarm. You can download that from Valve on Steam completely free.
Lastly I like to mention that Turbine is making Lord of the Rings Online free to play soon like DDO and there's a Company of Heroes online, a F2P game coming out soon.

As far as I know there was no passing the torch from Eul to Guinsoo, Eul disappeared into anonymity at The Frozen Throne release and Guinsoo created All-Stars by liberally using stuff from DotA.

I don't believe IceFrog was officially employed by S2 at that point. He's certainly not anymore. He works for Valve now. I didn't really follow the massive drama on the 'official' forums surrounded the departure of IceFrog but it's sad to see the site go down forever.

This is a Defense RTS where you try to survive against increasing amounts of enemies. The full game is not free, but the demo is big enough that it warrants mentioning. It gives you access to all game modes with limited types of enemies and levels. It's notable because of its resource system that's somewhat comparable to Netstorm (mentioned above). If I remember correctly Survival mode keeps expanding the map so you have to keep expanding yourself in order to survive.

An interactive story type game where you have to help those two ^, your good friends, save their marriage. You can walk around, have limited interaction with the characters and objects (you can hug them, kiss them, pick up stuff...) and chat/respond to them by typing your responses.
Façade puts the player in the role of a close friend of Grace and Trip, a couple who recently invited the player to their home for cocktails. This pleasant gathering, however, is somewhat damaged by the clear domestic confrontation between Grace and Trip upon the player's entry. Making full use of the incorporated language processing software, the game allows the player to type sentences to "speak" with the couple, either supporting them through their troubles, driving them farther apart, or being thrown out of the apartment.
Incorporating elements of both video gaming and drama, Façade takes advantage of voice acting and a 3-D environment, as well as natural language processing and other advanced artificial intelligence routines, to provide a robust interactive fiction experience. The player can take an active role in the conversation, pushing the topic one way or another, as in an interactive stage-play. These stage-plays are stored as script text files which can be read after the game is finished.
About 1GB in size (iirc) due to having a huge set of audio for the two characters for a whole bunch of different scenarios.
And it's really hard to win . Certain events in the game are always randomized so there are no shortcuts either.

For me Both Enters, Space, and Z are all like the A button or action button. X C V B and probably more are the back button. Shift lets you check underfoot. And there's that 0 opens all chests thing. Arrow keys are movement, although I think there's like a HJKL movement scheme too.. it's weird.
Ugh thats weird. I downloaded the RPG RTP, installed it. Then downloaded the game and ran the RPG_RT application. Menu comes up, but no keyboard commands work for me except F4, Alt, and Insert 0_0. Cant figure what I'm doing wrong
Download RPG maker 2003.. I got it form the first link when I googled it. Then download the game. Then fix fonts (read the readme from the rpgmaker thing for that) if you have to. Then just double click the Hero's Realm thing.. :s
There is two RPG_RT icons. Make sure your selecting the .exe one? idk
No, I've tried downloading RPG Maker 2003 from different places. RPG Maker 2003 RTP from different places. Hero's Realm 1.5 from different places. Same problem. I click on RPG_RT Application, (934 KB). Game pops up and brings me to menu. I can get all the way to where you choose the guy's name, but keyboard controls dont work.

It might be a font issue, which happens pretty often with RPGMaker games. But good that you got it working anyways.
These two free JRPGs are better than most of the ones I've paid money for, so definitely check them out if you have any interest in older FF-style games at all. I cannot recommend them enough.
Title:Last Scenario
Type: Japanese Role-Playing Game Platform: Windows only
More info:
This is an 2D old-school RPG (a la Final Fantasy 6 and below) made by SCF Works. It features an excellent story and challenging gameplay just perfect for people who find most RPGs to be too easy. The story starts off a little slow but before you know it, it takes off.
I would say more, but really you need to play the game to appreciate just how solid and well-done it is for a free RPG.
NOTE: On Windows Vista/7, you will need to download RGSS103J.DLL in order to see the text. It may be an inconvenience but it's well worth it to play this game. The instructions are below:
1. Download RGSS103J.DLL, I have found several different ones, but this one works: http://www.filecrop.com/RGSS-DLL.html [It is at the top of the list]
2. Open Game.ini in your game directory
3. On the second line, adjust Library=RGSS102E.DLL to Library=RGSS103J.DLL
After saving the changes, the text should show up from then on for Vista users. Happy Gaming.

Title:Exit Fate
Type: Japanese Role-Playing Game Platform: Windows only
More info:
This is another RPG made by SCF Works (same maker as Last Scenario) which follows a slightly different style of gameplay. Your party is made up of 6 people, and there are literally dozens and dozens of characters that can join your party. It is very similar to the Suikoden series if you have played that. While this game isn't as hard as Last Scenario, it still poses a fair challenge. About the story, it is very in-depth and intriguing, I'll just say that.
Also worth mentioning is the sub-theme of managing armies. Sprinkled through the game is a Final Fantasy Tactics-style minigame where you take control of a squadron of troops to destroy the enemy force (see last screenshot).
Like Last Scenario, Exit Fate is of excellent quality and I highly recommend it.
I'm going to vouch for this. It looks like a basic Red vs Blue shooter game. Except that people can sprint and jump so fast they leave trails, giving it very different mechanics from the standard shooter and amplifying the differences between the weapons.
These two free RPGs are better than most of the ones I've paid money for

Do all JRPGs run on the same stuff? Seriously, every single game within this genre I see has: 1. "Talking portraits" 2. HP/MP/XP/SPECIAL bars 3. Encounter-like team vs team turn based combat (usually with multiple instances of the same creature) 4. Doesn't really matter what you do, the story remains the same 5. Always teams (usually with some underage girls), basically never a one-man experience 6. No real choice as to the main character

Damn, how I loathe this genre
99% of them are made with one of the RPG Makers(currently RMVX is the latest) and hence they all look the same.
And yeah, basically it's a linear story without replay value. However there's stuff like Laxius Force that has 200 hours or so of extra content but it isn't free(the first 3 games of the series are though).
I really would love to play a side-scroller 2d action RPG, I guess there's absolutely none, though.
Igneous is an action platformer where you play as a tiki totem trying to escape from a raging volcano. By running and jumping, players have to navigate their way through dark caverns, forge raging lava rivers and cross crumbling bridges to make it out of the inferno alive. With stunning graphics and intense physics, each level is a new challenge to overcome. Easy to pick up, but hard to master, Igneous is an adventure you won't soon forget! Escape!

#1 fps game in Korea for over 100 weeks straight.
Los Angeles, CA - GameHi, Inc. the U.S. division of the notable Korean-based online games company GameHi Co., Ltd, today announced Sudden Attack, their No. 1 free-to-play first person shooter (FPS) will be launching in North America. Slated for commercial release later this summer, users can get a taste for what's currently one of the most popular multiplayer online FPS games in Asia by taking part in the closed beta test scheduled for May 26th.
Originally launched in July, 2006 Sudden Attack is now the most played first person shooter in Korea with more than 100 consecutive weeks on the game charts. Notable for its high quality graphics, stable game service, ample resources, and quick character and community system, Sudden Attack is positioned to garner similar blockbuster success in the U.S. Its broad appeal comes from a combination of elements including fast and fun casual gameplay; and unlike most FPS games, Sudden Attack is free-to-play.
With ongoing updates for new maps and firearms Sudden Attack offers a variety of features to provide both novice and core gamers continuous gameplay options. Community inclined it supports several chatting modes, macros and firm clan system, as well as Explosion and Elimination game modes. Quick entry allows users to install in under three minutes and join games without having to wait for a new start. Even new FPS fans can easily adopt in the game with simple rules and easy controls. Additionally, players can earn in-game points for game currency or purchase upgrades through real world cash.
Sudden Attack players are divided into two opposing teams: Special Force and Silent Fox Alliances. Each team is required to have at least one member and at maximum eight members. Players can also group into their own clans to fight within a separated network. Here players can show off group power, where teamwork and coordination play a crucial role. Strong clans can join 'Clan Battle System,' an exclusive competition mode in the game. Clan strengths can be proved clearly within this mode, as comradeship and cooperation are decisive factors to secure a win. Additionally, the game makes a breakthrough in comparison with preceding MMOFPS titles with the availability of in-water battle mode.
The closed beta will last just a week and is limited to selected participants. Interested players can learn more at http://suddenattack.gamehi.com/.
About GameHi, Inc. GameHi, Inc. is the North American operations and publishing arm of GameHi Co., Ltd., the Korean-based manufacturer of online games. GameHi first started its business by providing KT and KTH with game portal services in 2000, and since then has developed Dekaron (2Moons), a three-dimensional (3D) massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG); Sudden Attack, a military first person shooting (FPS) game, and Metal Rage, a 3D mechanic third person shooting (TPS) game. In addition, seven more new titles are currently under development.
If you like competitive team shooters this is a great game. It's one of the few free fps games where cash items don't have an advantage. IMO best team fps game since cs easy.
Type: Puzzle/Reaction/Skill.. it's a Super Monkey Ball clone with bonus minigolf. Available platforms: Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, FreeBSD, Dreamcast, AmigaOS 4 and iOS System requirements: Hardware accelerated OpenGL. Runs on just about any computer using minimum settings.
More info thanks to wikipedia: The main gameplay of Neverball is based on moving a ball using gravity by tilting the game world, not directly controlling the ball. The level must be tilted to help guide the ball to a goal, via an obstacle course, with a set time limit. Moving platforms and other objects get in the way, making levels progressively harder.
C-evo is a freeware empire building game for Windows. With a time scope of several thousand years, it covers aspects of exploration and expansion, industry and agriculture, warfare and diplomacy, science and administration. C-evo follows the spirit of popular turn-based strategy games from the mid 90s, but with more emphasis on powerful AI and careful design of the rules, resulting in a true challenge.
The game is based on Microprose's famous Sid Meier's Civilization and has many basic ideas in common with it. Actually, this project has arised from the wish to correct annoying design mistakes and AI weaknesses of Civ II. The priorities of the C-evo project are considerably different from big commercial games. While those are focused on easy entertainment and mainly compete for the most realistic and exciting up-to-date multimedia, this one aims at ageless challenge. There are six design principles, see below.
Design Principles
Principle 1: Low Risk. The basic idea is correction, not revolution. The playing experience with Civ II is used to overcome its design problems. New and overturning ideas will hardly be implemented, because this would only lead to another unbalanced game.
Principle 2: Fun by Challenge. Computer games get to bore after a while - that's a fact. The reason is that they remain the same - that's a common assumption, resulting in a stream of new games and massively extended sequels, each trying to temporarily suppress the boredom again. Call it fun by novelty. This project is based on a completely different assumption, induced by a few old games outside the computer world, which never change but are usually played for a lifetime. The problem of computer games might not be that they don't change but that they are bad - bad design, poor AI, false priorities set, constructs of perfect style and overwhelming size but not of intelligence. The challenge declines rapidly after a winning strategy is recognized. One wins every game with much to work and little to think. Doing this better should be possible.
Principle 3: AI Liberation. Empire building games are typically asymmetric. They are built around the human player as their center, with some pseudo-AI mainly having the job to keep him amused and to make the whole thing a realistic simulation. C-evo, in contrast, is a competition of equals. AI has no jobs, because that would reduce its strength. AI just has a goal, which is the same as the player's goal: to win. All are playing by the same symmetric rules, no matter if human or AI. Frequently made suggestions show that many players do not fully realize the consequences of this principle (which is forgivable because the games they're used to are far away from it.) Particularly, there is no way to direct the behavior of the AI - the AI is as free as the player is. Rules and AI are strictly separated. Some examples for ideas that are not compatible with this principle:
* A wonder that improves other nations' attitude towards the owning nation. As hardly as a human player would ever change his opinion about another player because a rule tells him to do, as hardly would true AI. * Democratic and fundamentalistic states being more aggressive against each other than two states usually are. Same thing - AI is not under the game's command! * Use of certain methods or weapons (like nuclears) resulting in international contempt. Same thing again. * A diplomatic option for the human player to ask AI allies for support in his war campaign, expecting true effort. AI to subordinate to the player's plans is as ridiculous as the player to give up his strategy and instead help one AI fight the other.
Principle 4: Focus on Strategy. It's the nature of a Civ-style game to be a simulation and a strategy game at the same time. This double-ambition causes serious conflicts in game design and the need for compromise. While Civ I and Civ II chose a middle course, newer Civ sequels are clearly directed towards simulation. C-evo gives priority to strategy, which means:
* The game is played by the players, not by itself. Everything happening is happening because one of the players does it or caused it, not because the game decides it's time for a surprise. * You can't win the game by hitting Enter a hundred times and accepting everything that some advisors are advising. C-evo is a game, not a movie. * Elements that are irrelevant for the game's end are out of place. * Rules of the game that represent a mathematical effect are specified as a formula, not using nebulous phrases ("more", "less", "better"). * Main goals are maximum challenge and minimum boring busywork. Realism is welcome but does not take precedence over these two aspects. * Poor players will not be helped in order to keep the balance of power. (Yes, this means most games are decided before they end formally, but that's natural and common to almost all good games.) * The fun you'll have playing the game without reading the manual is comparable to the fun it is to move pieces on a chessboard without knowing the rules of chess.
Principle 5: Compact Rule Set. A bigger game is not necessarily a better game. Additional elements can damage a game just as much as they can contribute to it. C-evo tries to keep its rule set small. Rules that would make the game more ornate but not bring new aspects of strategy will not be implemented, even if they'd add to realism.
Principle 6: Balance of Strategy and Micro Management. The game should remain small enough so that micro management can still be an important part of it. C-evo does not try to split into several levels where the lower ones are so boring that it takes automatics to keep the game bearable. The goal is to make the micro management interesting - or to remove it. To hide it away from the player with the help of macro management is the worst solution (though sometimes necessary).
I'll have to check out c-evo as this sounds quite interesting. I'm a huge Sid Meyer fan and love his games but am really disappointed in what the big companies have put out recently (Civ 5, C&C, Starcraft2, probably Diablo3, etc). We need to go back to the classics and focus more on gameplay like Alpha Centauri or even Civ2. I think the bigger companies (including blizzard) are too focused on catering to the audience that will bring in the big bucks rather than building a "good" game. Probably the grass roots and/or freeware open source projects will be where the best games in the future emerge. Companies have lost touch with the game behind the game. But then again they're laughing all the way to the bank so good for them.
It's basically a multiplayer mod for Command and Conquer Renegade, though it is also completely standalone and does not require Renegade to install and play.
It basically takes Renegade's C&C mode and refines the gameplay by upping overall lethality and converting everything into stuff from Red Alert 1. It has an addicting mix of infantry, ground vehicle, aircraft, and naval combat, and it also has a persistent stats system that tracks achievements and stuff whenever you're playing on the official server.
A Path Beyond revolves around having an ore harvester harvest ore for income, then using that income to buy specialized infantry or vehicles. The objective is to kill the enemy's base, and destroying certain buildings will shut down some of their production. For example, killing their war factory and barracks will disable their ability to buy vehicles or specialized infantry respectively. Killing their refinery will shut down income, and killing power plants will shut down base defenses. It's an awesome mix of FPS and RTS mechanics, and I rarely see games that does it so well.
It's been years since they released the current Beta build, though they've been patching it ever since. They are about to release their Gamma build soon though, which contains an overhaul of every aspect of the game.
I would definitely recommend trying this game out. I had a ridiculous amount of fun with it before I got Team Fortress 2. It's always great to drop into the official server for a quick game or two, and the community is usually quite mature. Plus, the system requirements are quite low, though they've also improved the original Renegade engine with new graphical features.
One game TLers might like is Allegiance. It's an old game, very skilled and strong community like Brood War. Essentially, you're one of the units in a space-based RTS.
Comic-style FPS, kinda like Q2/Q3 with very innovative movement system and nice community.
haha so nice :D some years ago i won a lan tournament 1v1 in warsow
to be good in this game you need sick hand-eye coordination and the ability to deal with very fast movement while beeing blasted by colorful effects :D(on public servers, not so much in 1v1's)
The Movement is taken from UT, the gun mechanics from quake which makes this game really fast and unique

I played this game a long time ago for like two days and had to reformat, and for some reason I could never find it again, but I really liked it. How many people still play? I'll probably download it when I get home, at least for nostalgia's sake.
It's been almost 5 months since this has been updated, and I've been recently getting into the "free shmup" mode again, and Japan delivers these with ample supply. The shmups I'm listing are free and as far as I can tell are virus free. The DL links are in Japanese but they mostly have easy enough to follow download links. Without further ado, here we goes:
Blue Wish Resurrection:
A pretty standard, but fun and challenging bullet shmup. The "plus" version is easier, but the normal version is more fun.
I also suggest getting Eden's Aegis from the same person as it is also incredibly fun.
Its a remake of the popular game Civilisation (the 5th part of the series is epic as well)
You have to build alot of citys and do research as well as conquer the world... there are 3 different ways to win 1st destroy all other nations 2nd Build a spaceship and arrive at the mars with it 3rd Turn cap
But this is more than just a game with its rules u can change nearly every aspect of the ruleset i prefer a very nice ruleset, it provides a long game with a lot of pos. szenarios:
with 14 players Map Size = 25 (25.000) Map top index 4 (i prefer a flat field without going from east to west) temp 62 percentage of land 18 Hills 25 Water 55 Special recources 300 huts 0
inital units ccxwk rapture effect 2 revulution 5 turns min revulution 6 migration off game end : min 200
starting gold 0 food required 150 multiplyer production 75 reduce city 7 borders 2 diplomacy 4 (off)
technology multiplyer 300 next 4 = 50
U can play it with friends and i recommend it for a 1on1 size 1 and percentage land = 33 (rest same settings as above)
uhhhh id suggst bloodbowl, theres a graphically high quality version of it made by cyanide (theres a league o nthis forum ) but you can play it for free via fumbbl over java if you can deal with sprites and an elitist community.

www.t2tmud.org is a pretty good MUD that I've played on and off (mostly off...) for 5 years or so, too.
N game is pretty old but was popular like 4 years ago :D
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is a pretty nice FPS with some limited RPG elements (and freeware!) Unfortunately I'm really bad at it lol.
Second Freeciv above. It's a good Civ II clone.
Another amusing game is FoldIt, where you try to fold proteins into optimal configurations... nerdy but addicting! Increasing your score by 20 points when you get out of that local minimum... mmm ... oh yeah.

Really addictive and quick to get going. Been playing on the european server for about a week, and I have yet to be in a "looking for group screen" longer than 2 seconds (not exaggerated, I barely have time to read the number of people currently looking for game before I get thrown into one).
Matches last on average 5-10 minutes (in my experience), and will be called a draw after 15 minutes if niether of the victory conditions are met (kill all enemies or capture the enemy base).
If you happen to die really early, you can exit the match, and look for a new match with another tank, you will still get full credit for a game even if you leave early, but you can't use that tank until the match is over.
You can get about 90% of the stuff for free by just playing alot, but the incentive to pay is to get access to new stuff quicker. And the exclusive stuff that you pay for is only marginally better than what you can get ingame. A example would be fuel (limited use) increases engine power by 5%. Premium fuel (limited use) increases engine power by 10%. The only thing that bugs me that is premium only is the ability to create groups so you can join with your friends.
A "worms-like" turn based strategy, artillery, action and comedy game, featuring the antics of pink hedgehogs with attitude as they battle from the depths of hell to the depths of space.

It haves a great community, a bunch of servers running and playing online is a lot of fun. Runs on Windows, FreeBSD & Linux.

Java based, so it runs practically anywhere. And the best about it: It has a TL GuildTL Guild up and running
I really, really hate to recommend it, but there is no denying how popular it is.

Reason why im not playing this game is cause of the lack of a TL guild I heard PvP and trade is back which is a huge turn on.
The servers are down at the moment because of the whole SoE hacking situation, but this has been one of my favorite games for over a decade now. Very skill-based combat but somewhat difficult to control and learn.

Yeah I don't know how to embed videos, hahaha. It's a shame this game kind of faded after it went p2p and then back to free again. It's really its own genre.
Winterbells. It's a very simple but very addicting little game. You won't spend hours on it, but it'll keep you busy for a while.
The goal is to get as many points as you can, you need to hop as a bunny from bell to bell, and get higher and higher. It's a bit like Robot Unicorn Attack.
Such an amazing game! Sort of Quake, Street Fighter and StarCraft combined!
'Bloodline Champions' is a free-to-play online player vs. player arena game where players engage in short, intense battles of up to ten players divided into two teams. Each player must take control over one of several different bloodlines, each with their own unique weapons and abilities. Easy to learn, challenging to master - 'Bloodline Champions' is just as much fun for the casual player as it is for the hardcore gamer.
We at Stunlock Studios, the developer of 'Bloodline Champions', made it our number one goal to make the ultimate PvP arena game. That meant doing away with chance, random elements, target locking and critical hits. Here player skill and team play is the most important factor to win.
Different bloodlines in a set up complements each other, different maps and game modes need different tactics, and good teamwork is important. Spells travel towards where the player aim their mouse cursor, and can be avoided by enemy players, making every ability dependent on individual player skill. There is no mana and the cooldowns are short, ensuring that every match is full of intense, adrenaline-filled action.

Ace of Spades is a first person shooter combined with a Minecraft like sandbox environment. There are two teams, the Green Team and the Blue Team, which fight over a randomly generated map to capture the Intel. Players can use the sandbox environment to build fortifications to defend their intel, or tunnel under hills to achieve more strategic positions. These are just a few examples of things that can be done, however there are many things only experience can guide you through. The rest of this quick guide will help you in getting started.
Windows installation tips: For windows you only have to download the link and install it. To change your name you need to to C:\Program Files\Ace of Spades and edit the config.ini file to have whatever name you want to appear when you play.
Install wine from winehq.org Download the Game normally, saving it somewhere. Then open it using wine, and install it. After that you need to go to your configure wine application, go into audio and change "Hardware Acceleration" Under DirectSound from "Full" to "Emulation" To change your name you need to instead go to your home folder, then your USER folder, press CTRL-H to view all hidden folders. Go to .wine, drive_c, then C:\Program Files\Ace of Spades and edit the config.ini file.

I just recently got back into PSO with my friends on this server (we all used to play on GameCube back in the day), and it's just as entertaining as I remember. Really wish there were more games like this, even after all these years it's a surprisingly entertaining and unique experience. Getting those rare drops always just feel so damn good.
Ok I want to revive this awesome thread for bored summer people! Here are 2 awesome rts-type games to be hyped about! Free flash games ^_^
NOTE: so-called "Hacked" versions of Stick War 2 are just Stick War 1 With an Edited Title Page! Stick War-released and pretty hard(Don't play normal mode unless you are just doing it for the first time but only play it till you get the hang of it then go to hard or extreme for some real challenges )
Controls are listed below the game.
The idea of the game is to defeat your opponent(The computer) By tearing down his statue(Basically the opponent's capital). After each scenario you get an upgrade point to spend on upgrading your units or your statue. Get archidons that shoot fire arrows, speartons that throw spears, Magikill that summon minions to do your bidding and stun enemies that are foolish enough to come close, and Giants that are well... giant. And so much more!
Now for Stick War 2- still under development. StickWar.com Delopment blog. Now are those pictures awesome or what? Stick War 2 will probably be out in time for christmas (Don't quote me on that though)
Desktop Dungeons A free rpg rouge-like game? awesome !! . A game is incredibly fun, challenging, and usually ends in 10 minutes. The goal is to get strong enough to take down a lv 10 boss. The most innovative thing about the game is exploration is treated as a valuable resources because you replenish health and mana when you explore the map. Be sure to give it a try :D
Vindictus is an amazing physics based MMO with beautiful graphics. It's Korean too so that's a plus. If you've ever raided in WoW, the group content pretty much captures that experience but 500% more dynamically and more fun. It's not open world though, and the game is peer to peer so avoid playing with people with shitty internet connections. Vid: + Show Spoiler +
I recently started playing Crimecraft, which is a third person shooter MMO that takes some stuff from GTA but is nothing like APB. Kind of low population, but there's only one server so there's enough people around at all times to get things done. Vid: + Show Spoiler +
And TF2...um, if you still haven't played it since it's gone f2p you're just doing it wrong. + Show Spoiler +
Previously called TDZK. It's a browser game but it's by far the best one I've ever played. Space-sim, with clans, fights, trade, etc. Everything you expect to find. Really well made and really enjoyable. The only real downside is that you only get a certain number of moves each day. Oh, and if the station you docked at when you logged off gets raided you usually end up getting raped when you're jettisoned in to space, unless you have a ship big enough to take on the attacking armada (good luck).
My other suggestion, which most people should know of by now to be honest, is Dwarf Fortress. That game is so sick it's not even funny. Comes with different graphic packs for those who don't like to play in ASCII www.bay12games.com/dwarves
Zen Bondage... just a very relaxing experience, you wrap a string around different objects. looks awesome and runs on anything. And one of my favourite soundtracks ever...
Ive played Combat arms for well over 2 years, lovely gameplay for a free to play, if you can put up with 80% an idiotic community, quite a few hackers and a broken shop system (money buys power.) But its an awesome game regardless.
Heard good things about maplestory, they've got a couple others too.
Ijji is home to many many games (10-15) all free to play. I havent played any of them except A.V.A (alliance of valiant arms) which is another excellent F2P game. Ive heard good things about some of the others they display.
These games have microtransactions funding them. So money = power in some cases i guess, like combat arms. Ava not so much though :-)
Not all of these games are FPS, just because ive added descriptions about them. Many MMO's RPG's, turn based etc
Geometry Wars is the single most epic arcade game of all time. I'm pretty sure there's a free version somewhere since it's quite old. But the newer edition (which costs money) can be found on the Xbox Live Marketplace, and it's addicting as heck.
Star Control 2 is abandonware... Because it's such a great game, there's an initiative to keep it going and updated for newer PCs over at http://sc2.sourceforge.net/ under the moniker The Ur-Quan Masters...
It's a great space-based RPG from 1992, where you're pretty much left completely to your own devices. You start off in a decrepit alien spacecraft, gather allies/enemies along the way while restoring your ship. Of course, there's more than 1 hostile civilization, one of which currently has Earth imprisoned.
Battles are 1v1 and you can choose to send out an alien ally's ship to fight or use your own ship (generally stronger, but if you lose that one you're dead). There's also a melee mode if you're not interested in the story at all.
I really recommend using the map (http://www.star-control.com/sc2/images/sc2_color_map.jpg) because it's extremely unlikely that you'll finish on time otherwise... It came with the game.
Heh... Just realized when I tried to search to make sure that no one had mentioned it yet that Liquid'Drone made a thread about it 7 years ago... To steal his explanation of the game, + Show Spoiler +
it starts in the year 2155 and you're controlling this huge ass alien spaceship, you're human yet never been to earth, and then you start out in our solar system and you visit earth but then you see that earth is imprisoned by this red impenetrable shield. there's this one alien species called the Ur Quan that pretty much controls the galaxy and your mission is to, from your one alien space ship, defeat them all. considering your vessel can only kill like 10 or so ur quan ships when controlled well and there are thousands of ur quan ships, your goal is not to defeat them through brute force.
and there are like 20 different alien species all with great background stories and distinct personalities. oh so great.
at the beginning of the game there is this slightly repetitive period of exploring and building up your ship, but it's oh so worth it.

O sweet thats awesome! Thanks for this contribution . You know you make good posts for an SCV =P. Also, bumping this because 1) this is an awesome thread deserving a bump for those bored people out there and 2) I wanted to post another game ^^
http://dominion.isotropic.org/ free web server for playing the 2-4 player game Dominion. Found here: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/36218/dominion The game is inspired by Magic however is completely different. It is a backwards CCG(Card collecting game Note: not trading). You start with 7 copper coins and 3 estates your parents gave you to make your own empire. However, your opponent(s) got some too. Now you need to either deplete 3 stacks of cards or deplete the provinces to end the game. You win by getting the most victory points. Victory points are accumulated through buying estates, duchies, and/or provinces as well as some cards in the game that give effects that either give victory points for actions, are victory point cards who's worth increases with your deck size(Garden: This card is worth 1 victory point for every 10 cards in your deck), or give effects and victory points as well.
The game is all about having the fastest deck. If you can get a deck that can buy a province every turn before the 13th turn you are doing great .
Quakeworld. My favorite game of all time I would say, what i consider the bw of fps games! Very movement based and fast paced.
It's pretty much freeware, you just need the id1 files from q1... which is easily obtainable, I will link below. It still has people playing every day, especially in Europe where it is really active! But I play in NA and it is still fun. #qwrookie on quakenet for any questions you might have. #telefrag They are very friendly and you can ask them anything about configs and scripts, etc. qw is very customizable. #telefrag.me and #na.qw.pickup to help find games in NA.
and there is also a 2on2 tourney/league that will be starting up very soon, http://qwsta.info/ for more info and #sta is the irc channel. Doesn't matter where you are from, plenty of euros playing but it IS played on US servers only. And there is a rookie division to play in too, so don't worry about being good!
nQuake Is a very noobie friendly setup, but has a lot of unnecessary video options to make it look "nicer". You can disable them of course through options but I would recommend just downloading the client(ezquake if you have experience dealing with old games and can use a console lol. I personally use http://www.quakeworld.nu/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=58801, very nice hud bind etc. the whole deal. Only problem is its setup a bit weird so you would need to read the readme.txt and know how to work with configs. Lastly, i use http://www.quakeservers.net/quakeworld/servers/so=8/ to find servers very easy. Prefer it over the in-game server browser.
Build awesome things to make the ball get into the goal. Designs can vary from simple cars to massive cranes. Used to be an awesome community who held many tournaments (seeing who could solve levels with least pieces), but the community has died off .

I think that's only the second time that's been mentioned in this thread and it blows my mind. One of the best platformers out there, no doubt.
Yes this is the 3rd time you'll see the mentioning of Cave Story, but this is probably THE best freeware platformer you can find around. It's like the Half-Life of FPS, or BW of RTS.

Well dude, if we don't give everyone one cookie then we don't get 15 times as many back ^^ Also, there is always more games out there..... some where..... in a world of your imagination!
Bloodline Champions I've been playing this game since closed beta. It's basically WoW arena but with no RNG and only skill shots. At the moment there's 22 different bloodlines (characters) available for play. Bloodline Champions offers unique gameplay, and if you're into arena or moba games, it is definitely worth checking out.
