I still need to get a flying guy for HM Fly, life is starting to get very inconvenient.

I'm honestly regretting taking Tepig. There are a lot of good fire alternatives, Volcarona stands out the most in my book, but not that many great grass alts. Serperior is prolly the best grass type in this set excluding legendarys...

pssh i have never played a pokemon game where i kept the starter more than 7ish gym badges.
they arent ever very good, the ability sucks, and i dont want to constantly reset to get a good nature and its not worth it to try to get a female to breed and then start over with. the starters serve their purpose as an early game pokemon- usually to about 50 i drop them. why do you need a grass type though? i have never found myself ever needing a grass type, except for misty in red blue because her starmie is OP lol, but even then i would just grab an oddish and train it for about 5 minutes and then destroy her.

You do realize no one whatsoever cares about the singleplayer game of pokemon. Pokemon competitive play is intense and on par with Starcraft and chess in terms of complexity and training/effort needed to learn it.

Edit: also within the history of the various pokemon metagames, Venusaur, Charizard, Feraligatr, Blaziken, Swampert, Infernape, and Empoleon all saw competitive play right? In RBY Venusaur was the best starter both in singleplayer and in competitive. Charizard rocked in GSC because of immunity to Earthquake and excellent stats (ntm Belly Drum wiping whole teams), and the term "Bulky Water" was pretty much coined for Swampert and Feraligatr because of their ability to switch in and withstand attacks, shrug it off with leftovers and launch a powerful counterstrike. In DP Infernape and Empoleon are both very useful in various roles. So yeah starters kick ass usually, this is pretty unusual that they suck.

Best pokemon game yet IMO. Workin' on the second elite four go around. I'm training a level 69 Hydreigon(new fav pokemon), a level 60 Tyranitar(old fav pokemon), a level 60 Volcarona(sexy fire pokemon), a level 55 Vanilluxe, a level 55 Eelektross, and my 6th is open for suggestion. All very aggressive, powerful pokemon with higher attack/special attack natures.

I'd wager most people who play the game don't even bother with multiplayer. I only play single player, so I'd say I care about it.

Edit: What's the metagame like right now? It seems like offense is heavily favored right now >.>

From my experience on PO, it's very varied. With the weather stuff, it was very offensive for a bit, but with swift swim/drizzle getting banned, it's toned down a bit. Deoxys-S not getting banned, the new ferrothorn/jellicent combo and all those defensive DW abilities that I can't remember. It's pretty even I'd say.

But I don't usually worry about those, since I run trickroom and I don't have much troubles with the popular walls.

I agree that its kind of ridiculous the extents some people will go to in order to develop strong/flashy in teams within the actual game, but there is a huge community of people who use 'battle simulators' to fine-tune and optimize teams that are theoretically possible in-game, without actually wasting huge amounts of time. Allowing you to focus on shifting EVs, trying different movesets and type distributions. The people who usually win tournaments are almost always this type of player.

I love battle simulators and while it is nice to just be able to make your team like that, I feel that it's less fun overall. I mean, if you spend all that time to get a Pokemon, then breed it, and finally get the perfect Pokemon from the egg, and EV train it and raise it from 1-100, you become attached to your Pokemon. You have all these shared experiences with it.

In battle simulators, it feels like you're just using one of those rental Pokemon from the Battle Factory in the Battle Frontier. There's no attachment or special feeling knowing that you raised this perfect Pokemon through all your time, frustration, and energy.

Edit: About the metagame: It seems like gen V just gave us a bunch of sweepers. Ferrothorn is a great wall, but there are probably only 1-3 other decent walls this gen. That snow flake thing has like 135 Sp. Defense, but he's Ice. Ice walls are useless

You're right, Ferrose. I never should have treated my Pokemon like they were my tools and focused so much on their stats and power level. I didn't show them enough love. I am going to set out on a new adventure and not care about IVs and EV spreads, abilities, natures, type distributions or any of that. I guess I have to care about their natures though if I'm going to get to know them at a personal level...

Also for anyone curious, the Teamliquid/Shoryuken of pokemon is definitely www.smogon.com.

And takes about 10000000x longer.

I play these games for the single player. If I wanted to play competitively, it'd be online. Breeders are a very dedicated bunch. Too much time for me. Learned my lesson.

@above, wow you have no idea about competitive pokemon at all do you...

tyranitar dragonite metagross garchomp gyrados even slaking gengar alakazam,
first four are pseudo legendaries. garchomp is an uber. gyrados*, gengar and alakazam are too frail, and slaking isn't even a consideration on anyone's list of threats.

To be fair Juddas, those first four pokemon you listed are all in sort a design 'family' that has extremely high base stats and excellent typing and aggressive abilities. Bringing out the top tier of non-uber pokemon doesn't actually counter his point very well. Starters are historically very very good Pokemon.

Edit: Garchomp is considered uber nowadays wtf.

Yeah, that's why I use them. It's way more convenient than the game. Another reason to use battle simulators though is that they can actually use the Dream World abilities >.>

@ Juddas: I was just giving you examples of starter Pokemon who are considered top tier by the community. Not all the starters are useless.

Edit @ SirKibble: I thought Garchomp got demoted to OU in gen V?
